Report: Redskins players told Grossman will back up Cousins

We’re still waiting on official word from the Redskins that Kirk Cousins will be their starting quarterback in Week 15, but more information about how the Redskins will handle their quarterback spot continues to leak out of Washington.

Jeff Darlington of NFL Network reports that Redskins players have been told that Rex Grossman will serve as Cousins’ backup against the Falcons. Robert Griffin III will be inactive, which, of course, makes him RG3rd String. The decision fits with coach Mike Shanahan’s statement that Griffin would be shut down for the season as a precaution against injury.

Why that desire to protect Griffin from injury cropped up before a game in a dome against a bad defense rather than on a crummy day on a crummy field against a strong defense is just one of many questions we imagine people will be asking when the Redskins face the media on Wednesday.

We’ll wait for answers to that and the other questions raised by the strange saga playing out in Washington between Griffin, Shanahan and owner Dan Snyder at the end of both a disappointing season and, almost certainly, Shanahan’s time as the team’s head coach.

Rex Grossman at quarterback. That’s a good way for a coach to get himself fired.

Save wear and tear on both young QBs behind that poor line and let Rex end his career as a starter

RG3rdstring? I feel bad for skins fans who have had logicalvoice turn every impartial fan on this website against Washington. Karma though, I guess.

It’s fine. RG3 will be back next season 100% healthy and motivated to prove the haters wrong. If you’re going to make fun of the Redskins, make sure to remember that you are insulting GOD’S CHOSEN TEAM. #HailToTheRedskins #SuperBowlChampsIn2015

Hey Redskins fan, you still think RG3 is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to your team? What a joke. The dude doesn’t even want to watch bad plays of himself on film, and is a few years from being out of the league from injuries.

Good luck building a team when you don’t have any top picks to work with.

Meanwhile, the Rams are very thankful for the gifts that you gave them. It’s the gift that just keeps on giving.

  9. 8man says: Dec 11, 2013 11:07 AM

Gross Rexman! I had no idea he was still in the league.

  10. azjam says: Dec 11, 2013 11:08 AM

Shanahan is a real jerk. He doesn’t give a damn about the fans or the players. Its his ego against Snyder. Remember he made the deal to get RG3 as the VP of Operations. I’m not a Snyder fan but he gave Shanahan a $7 million per year contract and total control of the team. He will get fired and no one will ever hire him on his hot shot OC son again.

  11. therealsmiley says: Dec 11, 2013 11:08 AM

Everyone calm down….the nation’s team will be just fine. Hail!!

  12. ravenswhat says: Dec 11, 2013 11:09 AM

I would love for Shanny to be honest about this situation for once in his life but expect nothing but coach speak from him until the end. This dude is just pathetic how he’s leading this team. The next owner to hire him is a true fool.

  17. bearshaterseverywhere says: Dec 11, 2013 11:14 AM

Hahahaha, Rex Grossman higher in the depth chart than RG 3 and out.

  18. johnnyjagfan says: Dec 11, 2013 11:15 AM

If RGme isn’t going to start why even dress him? Leave him in DC and just say that the trainers told you that his knee just isn’t ready for Sunday.

  19. whoisrdymlz says: Dec 11, 2013 11:16 AM

    Let me be transparent here:

Washington (the football team) is utterly unlikable. Their fans are among the most rude and delusional folks in sports.

Moreover, they gave up WAY too much RG3. St Louis made the right move.

Still, they have nothing to lose here. If Cousins does anything but but absolutely stink his trade value goes up. RG3 will get healthier and he potentially could fetch the same sort of ransom Washington paid for him in the first place.

  20. penvik says: Dec 11, 2013 11:16 AM

Shanahan is begging to be canned, but at this moment it seems Snyder is scared or intimidated. Just at a loss for words, what
Did this franchise do to get a curse like this. Go Vikings!!

  21. gunn3r11 says: Dec 11, 2013 11:17 AM

This is the best. When will Redskins fans ever learn? BTW, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers send their thanks for taking the sideshow media circus attention.

  23. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Dec 11, 2013 11:19 AM

since they need a new name, and washington dc is full of organizations known by their acronym, i think napoleon snyder should think old school (WWII era) and recast his franchise as the Washington SNAFU’s.

The REAL RG3 took a team to a Super Bowl…what can Bob Griffin do?

  28. burgundyandgold says: Dec 11, 2013 11:26 AM

I cannot defend this franchise anymore. Shanahan is a horrible person. The Bronco fans said this would happen. I am so hurt as a fan by his actions. So, go ahead and hate on the team – it is deserved. My only hope at this point is that Robert is not permanently ruined and that with new leadership (from an actual man, not a coward) he and the team can rebound. Hopefully, he will talk about this season in the years ahead and all he learned from adversity. Man, just sad and disappointing.

  29. Go-Hawks! says: Dec 11, 2013 11:29 AM

If the QB can’t handle 3 more games, because of fear of injury, then he shouldn’t be in the league.

This is football. These guys are tough. And apparently RG3 is made of glass.

And Shannahan is a terrible coach. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Skins win the rest of their games.

Is it just me or does every coach that exits Washington do so on Not-So-Pleasant terms. I mean, coaches get fired, but when Gary Kubiak was let go last week, it wasn’t this huge bru-ha-ha. Washington, though, it’s always a circus.

  33. jackburton77 says: Dec 11, 2013 11:50 AM

Gary Kubiak got fired after having a stroke on the field.

I’d rather take a job in DC than Texas…anyday.

I actually have not heard of the “Hall of Fammer named Joe Gibbs”…

  42. TheDPR says: Dec 11, 2013 12:33 PM

Those claiming he’s missing valuable experience in garbage-time game-reps don’t know pro football. He’s played in plenty of games already and it’s time to get smarter by studying harder; game reps at this point won’t help him.

This is actually the best move for Griffin and the team, but Snyder will find a way to screw it up.

What if Shanahan has wanted to bench Robert Griffin for a long time and only now has raised the courage to do so? Perhaps he wanted to bench Griffin for his ineffective play and could not do so due to media scrutiny and ownership disagreeing…. I am amazed at this team with such high expectations having become such a train wreck… Now it’s like a soap opera and I can’t wait to see what happens next

  47. rg3sus says: Dec 11, 2013 1:09 PM

Man, I really hate being a skins fan. Oh well, I will never be fair weather. Other teams fans have endured similar pains. At least we in Washington (ok, Maryland) get our very own soap opera. Let’s go Cousins and RG3 (sexy rexy Grossman the third!)
