Calvin Johnson on Matt Elam: I’ll show him that old-man strength

AP

Ravens safety Matt Elam tugged on Megatron’s cape this week when he said that the Ravens secondary was going to be physical with Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson on Monday night because the 28-year-old Johnson was too old to play a physical game.

As you’d imagine, the comments made their way to Johnson on Thursday. Johnson joked that he would show Elam and the Ravens what he could do with his old-man strength and then pointed out that Elam could say just about anything he wants since he and Johnson won’t be going head-to-head during the game.

“He can talk all he wants. He plays back. I don’t see him every play unless I run past him,” Johnson said, via Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.

Johnson also said he thought that Elam and fellow Ravens safety James Ihedigbo were “nothing extraordinary” and that he thought the Lions will be able to make plays downfield against the Baltimore defense. The statistics bear that out as the Ravens have given up 16 passing plays of 40 or more yards this season, the most in the league.

The Lions are No. 2 on that list, so there’s a pretty good chance of a shootout on Monday night.

  1. Unless he said it as a joke, trash-talking Megatron and saying he’s too old to play a physical game is probably the dumbest thing a person can say. He should be checked for a concussion. Like, really? Are you trash-talking Megatron?

I’m not a fan of either team, but I’ll be happy to see Elam get his lunch served by that “old man” this monday. Hope he has another monster game.

  2. Top 5 receivers in the NFL

    1) Dez Bryant
    2) AJ Green
    4) Eric Decker
    3) Steve Smith
    5) Josh Gordon

    In that order.

  3. Dude is in his prime at 28. Elam is an idiot. Way to piss off a monster. 200 yard day for Megatron on it’s way.

  4. I was thinking
the ravens were going to win but i never knew detriot would be 7-6. Im guessing that after this detriot wins and calvin will get to 400 yards. which should defnietly help fantasy teams like mine

  5. Megatron is on my fantasy team. He’s coming off a 5 point FF game. And now Elam the Butt Clown adds to his motivation?

    Exxxxcellllent.

  6. Well well well….let the games begin. As a ravens fan I was pissed when I heard what Elam said (especially since Elam can’t carry Megatron jockstrap). Elam may have just single handedly lost the game before it even got to Sunday.

  7. Weak. Calvin would have said a lot more, had he just not said anything at all in response.

Then again, he is a Lion – so, showing a little humility, dignity, or grace – forget it.

He is also overrated. I know everyone loves to slobber on about how great the guy is – and no one ever DARE say something as blasphemous as I just uttered, but it’s true.
Peanut Tillman, for one example, shows you how human he is. He can be erratic. I’ve seen him quit on plays – not fight for a ball – allowing an easy INT. Downfield blocking? Eh, not so much.

Just for a little comparison – it used to be this way with AP, too – no one DARED criticize the great AP, but now people see all the warts and accept them as a given (poor pass protection, fumbling, not a great receiver out of the backfield, too interested in individual stats, etc).

In fact I’ll bet we’re looking at a couple of young WRs in the league right now who will eventually surpass CJ with career stats – AJ Green, Josh Gordon, Alshon Jeffery – to name a few candidates.

  8. So, when was 28 considered old for a WR? Not that Calvin needs extra motivation, but man, I wouldn’t give him anything to feed off of.

  9. my sister on seeing calvin johnson play for the first time (against the cowboys), having no idea who he was or about his nickname before that:

“whoa, he looks like a transformer!”

  10. Josh Gordon is a stud, but 32 out of 32 teams would select Megatron over Gordon any day of the week! Gordon completely shot himself in the foot with his “substance” abuse! He is one more violation away from a 1 year ban! That being said, a major “payday” is certainly in question. Any large contract will have a “get out of jail free card” in favor of the team that signs him! Minimum signing bonus, he must have really had cataracts ! Addiction is sad:(

  11. I can say this, as a Vikings fan, the Vikings have used the same tactic on Megatron over the past few years. If you do hit him… his production does go down. But.. I gotta believe CJ is ready. Go Lions!

  12. He’s 28! Lol that’s not old that’s called in your prime. Elam thinks he can’t play physical? Has he watched tape? Megtron shoves corners 5 feet backwards anytime they try to press him.

  13. Also, I love how everyone is ignoring all the wonderful words of praise and adoration Elam ALSO had for CJ.

Conveniently, those are left out now.

“Big, fast, athletic, unstoppable, freak,” Elam said.

    and later:

    “I will never disrespect greatness…”

Everyone thinks this perceived slight is going to motivate CJ to have a monster game, but I bet his performance is underwhelming, and the Lions choke again, as they always do when under pressure.

  14. Rookies should be seen and not heard.

I guess Mr Elam must have missed Megatron’s 300 + yards receiving game several minutes ago. Not enough time for a doughnut to get stale.

  15. The Real Life MEGATRON from Cybertron has no cape!!!!

If the Ravens can find a way to take away his Energon Cubes (Oline and Run game) MEGATRON will be useless!

  16. I guess Elam didn’t learn from Rob Ryan, Dez Bryant and Tramon Williams?

If you trash talk Calvin Johnson, he will make you regret it and then some.

  17. Calvin just sent his fantasy owners to their championships.

Lions have a get-well game Sunday. Flacco will fold on the road and indoors with the noise. If Bush plays, the Lions could put up 50.

  18. I think Elam is trolling. Johnson is about the biggest most physical WR in the league and 28 is probably the age at which a man’s strength and athleticism is at its greatest.

But if there is a WR that you can hit it’s CJ. Stafford will quite often lead him right into a big hit from a safety since he knows he’ll hold onto the ball anyways. But definitely when playing the Lions you get chances to put big hits on their big WR.

Not that it necessarily will win you the game though.

  19. So I was going to start Nick Foles @ Minnesota for fantasy over Stafford vs Baltimore… but knowing Megatron is mad makes me think I might need to switch that decision. What do you all think?

  20. I thought Elam retired like 5 years ago? Oh, we’re talking about Matt Elam. Sorry never heard of him.

    Good luck. You’ll need it.

  21. too all those dissing Elam, Flaco or the Ravens
about what is going to happen on Sunday, I SAY NOTHING….. The game is Monday Night!!!!

  22. I believe Elam just gave Megatron a large chunk of allspark, that will more than likely backfire in a bad way for the Ravens. Megatron -140yds 2tds. Elam – 2 tackles, 1 pass defense, Burnt all day!

  23. I do agree Andre Johnson is still top 5. Probably second but these youngins are creeping up. And it’s great to see cause we know for the next at least 5 years well see those huge games by wideouts.

  24. Game hasn’t even started and he’s already making rookie mistakes. Memo to Mr. Elam: When you get posterized by Megatron on Sunday, just smile for the camera! 😀

  25. before last season, Calvin said he spent the off-season adding weight/strength to better handle the press at the line of scrimmage. Dude is 6’5″, 245, and runs 4.4 and lower. That nobody only muttered Calvin’s name to get himself in the news, he can’t hold Megatron’s jock

  26. I agree tropboi, I think andre johnson is the best receiver period. Noones better within ten yards, runs the best routes, great blocker. But I won’t argue with anyone saying megatrons the best, they’re both amazing. Dez bryant is a non factor in too many games to rate him in the top 5. Id take morgan, jeffrey and julio over him any day.

we will knock out their WRs just as we knocked out the packers WRs

    *************************************
Congrats, you just made classless post of the day! Talking about taking out players is pretty low.

  28. You don’t poke the Lion while he’s down. If this actually made Calvin some what upset, I’d imagine the rest of the team is pretty fired up about this game. Controlled chaos gentlemen and lets get this W.

  29. “I don’t appreciate it. It doesn’t help us,” Harbaugh said. “Get a guy like Calvin Johnson all fired up, that’s not really the idea.”

Ha you know John Harbaugh just shook his head when he heard these comments

  30. To quote a movie ….
“An ant has no quarrel with a boot”

Not sure Elam is big enough to be the ant, but you don’t tug on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit in the wind, you don’t pull the mask off the old lone ranger and you don’t mess around with ……..

And raven fans want respect? Elephants will fly and Ray will find his white suit first.

  32. Sheeple all over this board. Just want the media wants. Elam also described CJ as “big, unstoppable, freak and fast.” Media blowing something up that’s not really there once again…..

  33. The ONLY good thing for the Ravens, now that Elam has written a check, is that their defense has to cash it.
They could use a little extra motivation and I think they have it now.
