Stephen Jones calls out Cowboys’ top defensive players

Stephen Jones AP

Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has taken a lot of heat for the way the Dallas defense is playing, but Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones says the people who should be taking heat are the players.

Jones, the son of owner and General Manager Jerry Jones, told ESPN.com that the players need to be held accountable.

“You turn on the tape and guys we count on week in and week out didn’t show up,” Jones said. “I don’t know what it was, but we didn’t get it done and I’ve got to believe we can do better than that.”

Jones called out several defensive players by name.

“They’ve all got to be better,” Jones said. “Sean Lee has got to be better. Brandon Carr has got to be better. Bruce Carter has got to be better. Jason Hatcher has got to be better. We’ve all got to be better. We’ve got to do a better job when we do have injuries of having better players to get up and be there. It’s an organizational thing. You just have to do better on the defensive side of the ball. If we want to get to where we want to get to we can’t play that type of defense.”

The Cowboys are giving up 426.8 yards a game, worst in the league and on pace to allow the second-most yards in a season in NFL history. Jones wasn’t expecting that.

“Obviously you expect better,” Jones said. “We have to be better. You can’t play defense like that and be last in the league and expect to ultimately get to where we want to get to. Ultimately it’s got to improve. We know there’s circumstances with injuries — no excuses — our defensive line is kind of where it starts. We’ve been beaten up there but that’s part of it and we’ll have to keep churning there. But I fully expect us to play better these last three games on the defensive side of the ball.”

If the Cowboys don’t play better, they’re going to be on the outside looking in when the playoffs begin.

What are you going to do if they don’t play better?

There’s no accountability on this team

My God, he IS his father.

Cowboy fans have been waiting for Jerrah to retire, but the son is right behind him and he’s a virtual clone of his daddy.

You just can’t make this stuff up. It’s Rob Ryan’s fault; get rid of him. Now the D is even worse, so one of “Jerry’s kids” says the players need to “play better”. What a joke of an organization…

Why not tell the players that have to be more talented?

  9. hellafiedfc says: Dec 12, 2013 7:23 AM

Sean Lee has to be better??? the best player on that team comes back from an injury that was supposed to end his season and gets knocked silly his first game back and jerry says he needs to play better??

maybe jerry needs to be better..he can start by hiring a capable GM.

I didn’t need the tape to see that Kiffin’s scheme is the problem. In cover 2, if you don’t get to the QB, they WILL find an open receiver eventually with athleticism these receivers and TEs possess. And bringing 3 and 4 man rushes with a make shift line will not allow you to get to the QB. The Jones’ are complete fools.

  12. monsterright says: Dec 12, 2013 7:44 AM

Good players will play better. You just need someone in the organization that can recognize good talent and land the talent.

  13. itsnotforme says: Dec 12, 2013 7:44 AM

Thanks to Jerry Jr. we now know exactly what the problem is in Dallas. To bad they haven’t looked in the mirror to confirm what everyone else knows what the problem is.

The Cowboys are overrated at the beginning of every season. How many years in a row has it been now that all the prognosticators say this abysmal team is a favorite to win their division and make a Super Bowl push? They are what they are…a mediocre team.

  15. riverhorsey says: Dec 12, 2013 7:56 AM

  35. cook2006man says: Dec 12, 2013 12:04 PM

This team hasn’t had a good safety since Darren Woodson!! Kiffen is a joke. Should’ve kept Ryan. Jerry needs to let a real GM manage his team. He thinks since he won 3 Super Bowls in the 90′s, he’s a football genius!! Those teams had better defensive players and A LOT BETTER coaching staff! I love the Cowboys but it really sucks to see a good team go 8-8 every year!!!

  36. guachosporlife says: Dec 12, 2013 12:15 PM

    You need to draft better.

  37. flexx91 says: Dec 12, 2013 12:23 PM

Why don’t the so-called diehard Cowboys fans start calling out the Jones’? I can’t believe a VP of a franchise would call out players by name – especially one who doesn’t know a darn thing about personnel evaluation. The Saints had the worst defense (total yards wise) in the history of the NFL and there was no name calling or “throwing under the bus” by this franchise.

This franchise will continue to be mediocre for years to come…..

  38. hawkforlife says: Dec 12, 2013 12:46 PM

As an admitted Cowboys troll it’s nice to see I’ll be able to do it for years.

Here’s a solution if they’re that bad and you don’t mind meddling the way Jerry does.

If the D is tanking again this weekend just go into the locker room at halftime and cut one of them. Have them removed from the stadium, the team travel agent buys them a ticket home and they don’t fly back on the team plane.

Something tells me the following week the guys who didn’t get cut at halftime are going to step up their level of play knowing they might be unemployed before the game is even over.

  41. phang8 says: Dec 12, 2013 1:11 PM

Hey Stephen now go tell your daddy that he needs to get better too as a GM. He’s the reason why the Cowboys have won only 1 playoff game in 16 years. Hope you won’t be like him when he hands the team over to you and think you can be a GM too.

  42. rodh32340 says: Dec 12, 2013 1:12 PM

  44. flexx91 says: Dec 12, 2013 1:33 PM

Congratulations Eagles fans. Your team is the 2013 NFC East champions. After reading those comments, I would not even attempt to win a single game remaining on the schedule if I was one of those players.

  45. deenice810 says: Dec 12, 2013 1:55 PM

Don’t forget the clueless general manager has to do better.

  46. hunnymoney says: Dec 12, 2013 2:20 PM

It’s amazing…it’s like the movie Groundhog Day. Another day, another blame shift away from where it really belongs. Our general manager has consistently ignored the defense in the draft, drafting a total of 2 impact players in the last 5 drafts. Then we can’t figure out why our defense sucks. It’s pretty simple…if you constantly fill the unit with castoffs and “has-been” or “never was” players, you’ll continue to get poor performance. We have, and we are…Jerry Jones has no concept of the proper way to build a team, a fact made painfully obvious by the team’s record the last 18 years. It is this complete ineptitude in the front office that has condemned the once-proud Cowboys to an eternity of mediocrity (or at least it seems an eternity since they haven’t won anything of consequence since 1995) and .500 football. Unfortunately this is an ego problem now; were Jones to surrender the GM position, he would be admitting that Jimmy Johnson was better at personnel than he is, and Jones’ ego simply won’t allow that. Therefore we’ll continue to see the same pattern of mediocrity for many years to come, and no defensive coordinator can change that, regardless of his prior successes.

  47. steaderic says: Dec 12, 2013 2:38 PM

I know how fun it is to make fun the Cowboys and Jerry and Stephen Jones. But I guarantee you that if you asked any of the players he called out by name, they would all agree that they need to play better.

“What are you going to do if they don’t play better?
There’s no accountability on this team”.

And, the Cowboys are just supposed to cut every player (all under contract, no less) that is not performing as good as expected? What, in your omnipotent wisdom as an Eagle fan SHOULD they do? Let’s hear this one.

Let’s talk about YOUR team. Dallas D and its players sure played well enough earlier in the season, and dominated Foles and your team. And your comment from a team with ZERO SB wins. Where is the accountability there? Other than Reid getting fired, what has your team done to win the elusive SB trophy?

Right, that is what I thought.

“Cowboy fans need to boycott a home game and let Jerrah have to pay the loan payment on that new stage with no stars on it!”

Really? Your comment may have some traction except for the fact that the City of Arlington and its residents own the Cowboys, Einstein. If you are going to comment, you may want to at least have some semblance of knowing what you are talking about. He owns the team, NOT the stadium.

    Anyway……

    Right, thats what I thought!!!”

Let’s clear this up right now. As an Eagle fan, you have no platform to talk about anything Lombardi simply because your team has zero of those elusive trophies. You are out of your league even mentioning it. This is akin to George W. Bush attempting to criticize a language arts teacher.

There is this thing called a legacy. Your team has a losing one, my team a 5-time SB winning one. You are talking playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs???? Coach Mora, you can have all the playoff wins you want, but what counts is the Lombardi trophy. 31 teams don’t win the Super bowl every year. Your Eagles have been among those 31 teams since the beginning of the SB era. The cowboys have been the one team who won it 5 times. You can downplay SB trophies all you want, and it is typical for Eagle fans to do this since all they have known is disappointment (and of course McNabb vomiting) when it comes to SB’s. I guess can’t blame you for your inexperience there, but your ineptitude – you own that one, bro.

“By the way you scored 17 points on a Matt Barkley led offense.. Way to go!!!”

Seriously? Wow. Typical ineptitude from an Eagle fan. Let’s clarify – ALL 17 points were scored (in your house, by the way) BEFORE Barkley came in because your defense couldn’t stop the Cowboy’s offense. I will stick to facts. You can stick to being an Eagle fan. It fits you PERFECTLY.

Don’t worry. This will all be dealt with week 17.

  60. waco442 says: Dec 14, 2013 2:31 AM

This Cowboy team has not beaten a team this year with even a 500 record. The Packers & Skins are not 500. We will have to wait & see where Philly’s record is at the time of the last game.
It does not matter how these Boys play out the rest of the schedule, even if they win all three they would go to one playoff and that team will have a winning record. So really this year the division title will mean very little. Garrett does not really seem all that upset on his press conferences after a loss when compared to other head coaches.

  61. jsrdc says: Dec 14, 2013 12:03 PM

    @ ObjectivelySpeaking

“lol. i could be wrong, but jsrdc’s not doing a good job hiding his frustration in following a largely irrelevant franchise. but that’s just me, objectively speaking”.

Not only could you be wrong, you are. What is relevant to the topic is SB wins. Cowboys have 5, Philly has zero. SB trophies are why you play this game. You don’t play the game to win playoff games, yet Philly fans think that is the standard. Playoff games are all they have, but fail to recognize the higher goal. When you live in a world of horizontal, you fail to acknowledge the vertical. Philly fans, as so aptly demonstrated by dcstinks, will give more credence to “making playoff games the last 17 years” than 3 SB wins in the past 17 years. To me a SB win is the end-all be-all. But that is jut me, objectively speaking.
