Vernon Davis knew he could beat Bobby Wagner for a TD

vernondavis AP

The 49ers’ only touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks came on a Colin Kaepernick pass to tight end Vernon Davis, with Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner in coverage. That was coverage Davis knew he could beat.

As shown on NFL Turning Point on NBCSN, before the series that ended with Davis’s touchdown, backup quarterback Colt McCoy approached Kaepernick on the sideline and told him that Davis recognized single coverage he could beat.

“Vernon said their guy was playing him straight up man. He said he can run right by him,” McCoy told Kaepernick.

Once the 49ers reached the red zone on the ensuing drive, Kaepernick threw three passes to Davis, one a 13-yard pass down to the 6-yard line, one incomplete and one that touchdown. Clearly, Davis was right when he said he could beat that coverage.

That drive came at the end of the first half, and in the second half Kaepernick never threw a pass in Davis’s direction. So the Seahawks apparently made some halftime adjustments. But the damage had been done.

Please. Wagner runs a 4.4 like Vern does. He made a nice move to create the window for Kaepernick to throw the pass. Davis is not “running right past” Wagner in any scenario.

It was a six yard hook against zone d. I could beat that in the 4th grade. He didn’t run by anyone. He turned around. Give me a break. Is that how sad one of the best TEs is now he has to talk up a pass that happened probably 12 times this weekend?

You wanna see someone run by a guy? Watch Luke Willson run right past Patrick Willis twice and get almost 70 yds and a td in two identical plays. Willis’ reaction the second time is CLASSIC.

Hey all the credit in the world to a great a player and a solid win by a strong team but this isn’t a story…

Interesting Vernon that it took you two games to communicate that you could beat single coverage. Don’t remember seeing you beating any coverages up in Seattle.

Just an FYI – if you see the Seahawks again, it will be in Seattle.

    Enjoy.

O.K. VD, we all know that the ONLY reason you caught a TD pass (1st one against the Hawks in 4 seasons)
was because KJ Wright broke his foot right
    before that.

Wagner can’t cover anyone and guys like
    Gonzo and Graham did squat.

Hawks will miss KJ. Beating Wagner is
    nothing to gloat about.

Beware of Bam Bam Chancellor, now!

Yeah, that happened, mainly because the SF fans were saying non-stop before the season even began how badly the niners were going to beat the Seahawks in the Clink.

God damn it I’m a Niners fan and I’m already sick of our guys hyping this up like we locked up the #1 seed or something. 43. praetorian12 says: Dec 12, 2013 7:13 PM

Hilarious, especially since that wasn’t man to man on the goal-line play. But don’t let the facts get in the way of your story.

Truth is… there was a tight end who beat a linebacker badly for a TD in that game… but the TE was 5th rounder Luke Willson, who made Patrick Willis look… well…. old.

  44. pnwl4a says: Dec 12, 2013 7:16 PM

Hawks fan… VD beat Wagner for the TD…
    and the 9ers won.
But heres the thing, SF struggled all day only to win by 2, in their OWN home, and they had to scheme to get the 2…. yes a win is a win in the NFL but that is Not good, at all.
If SF happens to make the playoffs they will most likely be visiting Seattle again, and we know how Kap and the 9ers play at Clink, again not good.
I think this organization is a little charged up right now after that last 2pt win.. I wouldn’t be surprised if SF underestimates the Bucs and lose in Tampa.

Really? You can’t argue that the 49ers have a rich history yet all the lame Seahawks fans (and I don’t mean ALL Hawks fans, just the foolish ones) can say is “That was 20yrs ago”. How many of you chirped about “OH!, last year at the clink we killed you”. So we can’t talk about our history or more recently the fact that the niners were in the last 2 NFCC games and 1 Superbowl in the last 2 yrs. I don’t even hate the Seahawks this year (but it does seem a bit premature to put them in the category you are placing them anyway) – I hate the Seahawk FANS. The way you and your pals are reacting to this article is precisely why. The 49ers and their fans have a very skewed view.

The 49ers were the NFC champs last year
The 49ers were high on most everyone’s list at the beginning of the season to be a contender for the Super Bowl this year.
Kaep spent as much time as RGIII promoting his brand during the off-season
Harbaugh was acting superciliously superior over other teams problems.

And yet, this week, they’re acting like they’ve won the Super Bowl just because they beat the Seahawks by 2 points in the last 5 minutes.

@Mr. Wright 212, Davis blew by Wagner, because they’re not running in a straight line on a track in shorts and t-shirts. They’re in a game situation with a bunch of other players to run around, in pads, and running routes with cuts. It’s people like you and Mel Kiper who get all doey eyed at workout warriors at pro day numbers. Davis is very good at running routes and Wagner, not so much. Advantage: Vernon Davis. It’s not that hard of a concept.

Stupid! The “coverage” he thinks he beat was zone. He sat in a hole and caught a six yard pass. What a freakin stud! The adjustment the hawks made was going man to man on him and he was completely shut down. Just like every other time he plays the hawks and is non existent. This guy is delusional.

  70. rrthomasxyz says: Dec 12, 2013 9:35 PM

Hey Davis, what’s it gonna feel like playin’ the dozen when you meet the Seahawks at Century Link…..you really think the 49er’s are really going to win when the 49er’s can only luck out with slim wins at home while they get blown out in Seattle….Vernon, can’t wait to see what you won’t be doing with Wagner in Seattle…you’ll never get past the line of scrimmage

  71. strongmackn says: Dec 12, 2013 9:50 PM

Im a hawks fan. I have vernon on my fantasy team. Hes a stud. I watched that td happen. It was a beautifully thrown ball. Great hands by davis. Not to sell wagner short, it was great defense by him too. He was right there all over vernon. He couldnt have really played it much better.

What trips me out is how this is even a story. What trips me out even more is how everyone is all pissy back n forth. Ya some of these hawk fans are kinda silly. Some of yall talkin down on hawk fans aint any better.

It was a great game between 2 great rivals. Enjoy it and quit freakin out on eachother. You guys look foolish. Even worse than the foolish media for trumping up this weak story.

  72. mastereee says: Dec 12, 2013 10:05 PM

great game! vernon is a beast!!! its amazing he can have that shredded bidy without ped’s like all the seawussiies! get pete carrol pom poms so he can skip and cheer down the sidelines and mow on that gum! harbaugh would kick carrols arse like bolding kicked shermans and like old man gore took earl thomas to school for game winner!!! i feel happy still! yay!! russell wilson is a hugee nerd too! we won so shut it! yay

You wanna see someone run by a guy? Watch Luke Willson run right past Patrick Willis twice and get almost 70 yds and a td in two identical plays. Willis’ reaction the second time is CLASSIC.

    ————————————————————

Actually, there’s quite a bit more to it than that.

The 49ers were playing a soft 2 zone. If you don’t know what that means, its the safeties are responsible for the 2 deep halves, the corners will drop about 10 yards back outside, the linebackers will cover short middle and Ahmad Brooks (who spied Wilson at certain points during the game) drops towards the flat/qb contain.

Seattle pulls a run fake (which they are very proficient at) and the rookie Reid bites. He abandons his zone for run support which is a big NO NO. Whitner the veteran stays by his assignment dropping into his deep half.

Willis reads this. His main responsibility is zone.
However, he turned and saw Reid was out of his zone. His job was to lead Wilson into Reid’s area. Which with Reid’s busted coverage, doesn’t help. Willis tries to give chase but is already 10 yards back. He wasn’t playing man at all.

Carlos Rogers, when he turned his hips, saw Reid had jumped on the fake run and had to run with the receiver down the field leaving a wide open Luke Wilson.

Rogers has to come off his man, try and close, and make the tackle on a big TE in open space. That’s a tough task for anyone, so I don’t blame him for missing the tackle. But he definitely did anyway. From there Wilson goes in to score.

While Luke Wilson did score that TD, the credit really should go to Russell Wilson. He saw Reid bite on the fake. Great job on seeing what the defense just gave him.

If Reid stays home, Rogers can peel off his receiver and jump the TE route. Russell Wilson would dump that down to Lynch

Reid is an outstanding safety and did play very well throughout this game. But, busted coverages like this can knock you out of the playoffs and playoff teams know how to take advantage.

I saw this happen to safeties on both teams during the game. While both defenses are among the best in the league, both made some undisciplined mistakes but thats typically a byproduct of who you are playing.

Seattle gave the game to the 40whiners because of all their crybaby BS…It was a deal between the owners…Then Kaeperdink does a whiney commercial about aggressive fans harassing him…Pure whining…And did you check that score? 17-19? Hahaha…Big deal! Seattle is still no. 1 in the NFL…As for little Gore, that little dude, he should know who has owned the NFC west since 2004, ant it’s not the 40whiners…Hey little Frankie, get bast the Cards and then talk some smack, if you can…BTW how’s that leg? Hahahaha!

So the Seahawks beat the Niners by more than the Niners beat the Seahawks in their respective home games….

So how many Super Bowls is that worth? Still 0 for 27 years?

  77. 9ereddie says: Dec 13, 2013 1:27 AM

Seahawk fans wondering why Kaep busted out the beats!! and your upset ? puh leeze..

  78. holdmadik24 says: Dec 13, 2013 2:05 AM

WOW for a fan base that swears this game was meaningless, a lot of Seahawks fans seem salty? 2 very evenly matched teams. If they played 100 games against each other they would probably go 50-50. They split this year, it happens.
    ———————————————————————————–

Absolutely delusional dude! Niners are a really good team but no way would they beat the Hawks any more than 2 out of 10 times. Scratch and claw to a last second field goal win at home and completely stomped in Seattle. On a neutral field the Niners wouldn’t stand a chance either. There’s no question who the better team is as of right now. God I hope we get to play in the playoffs!

  79. swaggyy says: Dec 13, 2013 3:25 AM

Yeah cause Kaepersuck and all his weapons surely shredded the Hawks secondary. You niner fans cray tho!

I love that TE list that was turned in. Witten # 1. I guess the list was submitted 9 years ago. I’m not sure why you guys even argue with the hawk fans. Their team is not relevant in the NFL. You’re not recognized as being part of the NFL until you win a super bowl. I think it’s funny they always gripe about niner fans. Niner fans actually have the right to brag and gloat. 5 rings says we have been here before, we’ll be here again, and we’ll be here forever. Hawk fans are insecure because they know they could lose another franchise just like the Super Losers. Joke of a city, joke of a fan base, and joke of a franchise…..

you wanna know what the real joke is? Colin kaepernick trying to play in Seattle without looking like he its gonna start bawling any second. Here’s another good joke, Justin smiths 2013. Oooh, and another, the whiners chances of winning a playoff game in Seattle being better than 0%.

The real funny part is Craptree just got hurt…. Looks like SF’s getting healthier is not so true. They wont even make it through the first wild card weekend. Their win over the hawks was a fluke and they in no way are a dominate team…

If they were then they wouldnt get the spit stomped out of them every time they come to seattle.

  84. dacktle49 says: Dec 13, 2013 1:11 PM

Hey tap79 so yeah the last two games that were played in Seattle the 9ers lost, it started in December of last year basically the same time you became a fan you front runner. The 9ers have beat your precious Hags 4 out of the last 6 meetings but since you jumped on the wagon last December you wouldn’t realize that.

Hey Natpalmer. Your post is a bit of kettle calling the pot black. The biggest complainer/conspiracy theorists in the NFL world are Seahawk fans. Thinskinned, always bragging, incredible blowhards, and whining about the officiating more than any other fan base on the planet. Instead of complimenting a team that beat the Seahawks they spend a lot of time griping about the bad breaks the ‘hawks got or putting down the opponent and its fan base. Yes we have Niner fans that do the same thing, but Seattles are the worst. Look some of these responses. “Our win is still better than the Niner win.” Who cares. The guy pointed out, its been a standoff the past few years. But in the ‘Hawk fan’s minds, its not. The Niners can beat the ‘Hawks in Seattle, despite the last two scores up there. Of that, I have no doubt. And their peaking at the right time. And by the way, Vernon Davis simply said he can get past Wagner to McCoy who relayed that to Kaepernick. Nothing more. It’s really a non-story because every receiver/tight end says that about the guy defending them. Still many fans-no both sides-have made it into a bigger deal. Bottom line, Niners won, and Seattle lost a little invincibility. They’ll lose a little more when they get beat in New Jersey on Sunday.

Oh darman55…where to start…firstly, the Niners CAN’T beat the Hawks in Seattle, as we’ve all seen the past couple times they’ve played there. Secondly, get beat in NJ on Sunday?? Ha. That’s just laughable. Like Eli and Co are going to come out of the wood-works and all of sudden start playing sound football. Not gonna happen. All NFL teams have whinny fan bases. To lump Seattle in that category as the worst is just 9er delusionality at it’s finest. And I wouldn’t go as far as to say “their (it’s they’re btw) peaking at the right time”, your QB still sucks and you guys barely squeaked out a win with some much needed help by the refs. Harblow throwing his little tantrums isn’t going to help you get by at the Clink.

Giants fan here. 30 years as a fan. Objective about my team. We have too many guys just sent to IR, too many ruled out Sunday. Seattle, which I like, will start slowly in a 1 PM east game, but the Giants have not played a good offensive game start to finish this entire season. They aren’t about to do so against the best defense in the NFL. Our season is over, and only a few guys are playing for pride and to secure a last-leg deal (Justin Tuck).

  88. raiderfansaredelusional says: Dec 13, 2013 10:36 PM

Seattle fans are hilarious. They act like the best record gets them a ring. You have won ANYTHING! Please tell me the last time the #1 seed in the NFC won the Super Bowl? Then tell me when the seagulls last won the Super Bowl? LOLOL. Shut up seagull fans. You have NEVER won and will never win anything. Love the beats by Dre commercial. Totally shows the delusional fan base in Seattle who has NEVER won anything. So sad. LOL

  89. adderal says: Dec 13, 2013 11:01 PM

Mr. Wright I think your Giants will put up a pride full fight at home against the top team this year. Two recent rings and I just can’t count them out of that game. Of course it helps my team if NY does win but still I just have a feeling they will make a game of it.

No, they won’t. Too many guys are out. They’ll try early, because Seattle does not get off the ball in the 1st halves of 1 PM games, but we will turn it over late and lose. We may as well lose out anyway. We need to get younger.
