Antonio Cromartie back at practice before date with “scary” Newton

Jets coach Rex Ryan is a fairly confident character when it comes to his defense, but the prospect of facing Panthers quarterback Cam Newton gives him a little pause.

Before the 2011 draft, Ryan said that Newton could throw a strawberry through a battleship and he remains full of wonder about the physical abilities of a quarterback who is almost the same size as one of the Jets’ outside linebackers.

“This guy’s a scary athlete,” Ryan said, via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. “And when you meet him, he’s scary because it’s like, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ I just remember that when we were in the preseason. I’m like, ‘Who’s going to tackle that guy?’ He’s about as good looking an athlete at quarterback as I’ve ever seen, and he can throw. He’s got a bazooka for an arm. The kid’s just ridiculous. It’s Calvin Pace back there.”

It would help to have all hands on deck when dealing with such a player and the Jets took a step toward that on Thursday when cornerback Antonio Cromartie returned to practice. He was in a no-contact jersey because he hasn’t progressed fully through the league’s concussion protocol at this point, but his presence was a good sign for his chances of playing this Sunday.

Cam is a beast but does he possess the mental faculties to be an NFL QB?

You can have all the attributes in the world while playing in the NFL, but sometimes it still is not enough if you are still a few sandwiches short of a picnic basket in the mental department. If you look at all of the greats, Montana, Favre, Rice, Sanders, Brady, Rodgers, Manning, they are all average to good athletes, but they all possess the mind to play the game.
Newton may have a rocket for an arm, be the size of a linebacker with the speed of a wideout, but he only has so many angles to beat you with. You can only pull the ball down and run so many times before the opposition figures it out and lays you out. There is a million different ways to run a play, but not having the brain power to remember them all and run them on call is a major downfall.
You can have 11 Cam Newton’s on the field, give me 1 Brady or Montana and a bunch of average Joe’s and I’ll still come out on top. Newton is a beast, but he can be beat.

EJ = Extremely Jealous? Cam is a beast and has proven he is more than just a running QB. Dont forget this is only his third season he will only get better.

Cromartie is back on the field? I am surprised he knew how to get to the stadium.

    ………………..
Are you really suggesting Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice were only “average to good” athletes? Like, seriously? Did you ever watch Sanders take a snap?

    Speechless. Just speechless.

Cromartie was in a no contact jersey? Isn’t that the same jersey he thinks opposing players wear every week?
