Shanahan: Someone might trade a first-round pick for Kirk Cousins

Kirk Cousins AP

Washington coach Mike Shanahan thinks his decision to start quarterback Kirk Cousins for the final three games of the regular season may yield dividends for the franchise in the future.

Shanahan said on ESPN 980 that he believes that if Cousins plays well, some other team might offer a first-round draft pick in a trade for Cousins.

“If he lights it up, hey, maybe we can bring a first-round draft choice back to this organization, and say hey, who are we gonna take in the first round,” Shanahan said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “And I think by him playing and Robert not playing, it gives us a chance to have a few options for our organization that we wouldn’t normally have, and the safety of our quarterback going into the offseason is preserved. . . . His value can only go up. It cannot go down. It can only go up.”

Washington didn’t have a first-round draft pick this year and doesn’t have a first-round draft pick next year, thanks to the trade with St. Louis that allowed Washington to draft Robert Griffin III. So getting a first-round draft pick for Cousins could be great for a franchise that has plenty of holes to fill.

Unfortunately, it’s probably wishful thinking. Cousins lasted until the fourth round of last year’s draft because NFL teams didn’t think he had first-round talent, and a few good performances in meaningless games won’t change that. If an NFL team wants to spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback this offseason, that first-round pick will be spent on a player like Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles or Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, not Kirk Cousins.

So when Shanny gets a new job next year in an ailing franchise without a defined starter at QB if he wants Cousins he has now raised the bar that he has to give a first rounder.

The dude just negotiated against himself.

    What a moron.

Wait, what? He’s actually openly discussing trading Kirk? Has he totally lost his mind?

  9. getyourownname says: Dec 14, 2013 9:23 AM

I think Shanny is hoping it can be a package deal that includes him in the trade, too.

  10. kpizzow says: Dec 14, 2013 9:24 AM

I know he is just throwing it out there but this shows how dumb Shanahan and the Redskins are. No one trades for starting QB’s. Name one ? The benefit of drafting your own qb is that you get to control him for 4-5 years at a reasonable salary – then decide to pay him or move on. So I need to give up a 1st round pick, then sign Cousins to a new deal – because I’ll want to control him for 3-4 more years and all of this after seeing him play 6 whole games. How did that work out with the Matt Flynn situation.
The Redskins are trying to do things differently when they need to look at successful franchises and imitate them ! Do good teams trade away picks…nope…

Shanahan is also coming from the perspective that coaches and GMs willfully try to get fired, too, and trading a first for Cousins is a great idea if that’s your goal.

  16. r8dernation says: Dec 14, 2013 9:28 AM

Cousins is better than RG3readsistoomuchforme. Better off trying to trade him to the Texans for a 1st rounder in 2014 or 2015.

  17. chut26 says: Dec 14, 2013 9:29 AM

The Eagles are the only team to successfully pull this trick off and I’m pretty sure the rest of the NFL has taken notes on how well it’s worked for the teams of the receiving end. I guess The Redskins have forgotten they gave up the 37th pick in the draft for Donovan McNabb.

    Delusional, delusional & delusional!

  25. bennyb82 says: Dec 14, 2013 9:35 AM

  26. cunninghampeetemcnabbvick says: Dec 14, 2013 9:36 AM

Alright Kirk you’re starting in place of RG3. We want to protect him (plus he’s been playing poorly) and we really want to see what you can do. You see, if you play well, we might be able to get rid of you for a better player, that way we can go back to the guy your replacing. And if not, well, I don’t care, that’s the next coach’s problem. Shanahan out!

  27. bobleblah says: Dec 14, 2013 9:40 AM

I like Kirk Cousins. Excellent skill set for a team that runs a West Coast offense. Good footwork. The ball comes out quick – he knows where to go with the ball. Very decisive in his decision making. Good athletic instincts.

I don’t see anything wrong with Shanahan’s statement.

  33. dolfan72 says: Dec 14, 2013 9:49 AM

The only way that trade scenario is made is if Dave Wannstedt is still coaching the Dolphins!

Shanahan knows his days are numbered. Who thinks he’s the first coach fired as soon as the season ends?

Shutting RG III down hurts the integrity of the game as John Madden said. Apparently Shanahan also didn’t listen to Herman Edwards. “YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!” Winning apparently isn’t important to Shanahan.

As for Denver firing him, they never should have hired him despite the two SB wins. He was a dud in Oakland, too!

  43. emperorzero says: Dec 14, 2013 10:08 AM

If Cousins plays lights out over the next three games a dream scenario would be the Redskins getting a second rounder for him, but for that to even happen Cousins is going to have to have two Matt Flynn vs. Lions type games. With as god awful as the ‘Skins are, that’s just not going to happen.

The Redskins will be lucky to recoup the fourth rounder they spent on him in the first place.

  44. larams29 says: Dec 14, 2013 10:09 AM

A team might, I said “might” give up a 3rd or 4th round pick at best for Kirk. It all depends on if teams want to take that risk. I like what I saw last season when he played. He’s good in the pocket and on play action. A needy team like Houston, Jacksonville, Cleveland could make a move. Minnesota who might want to start fresh could be an option, or he could end up in Denver as a backup, learn from Peyton and inherit the starting qb job when Manning retires. All i can say is good luck Washington! Jeff Fisher and the Rams cashed in on this deal! The Rams are in the driver’s seat again at the draft. Next best trade ever, right next to the famous Herschel Walker trade. Way to go Danny boy!

  45. harrisonhits2 says: Dec 14, 2013 10:10 AM

Laughable. Shanny is the worst coach in the the league these days.

I didn’t realize this but they said on Boston sports radio this week that Shanny coached teams have only won a single playoff game in the last 15 years. This guy is toast in the NFL and hopefully once Washington dumps him he’ll be gone from the NFL.

  46. graham4jc says: Dec 14, 2013 10:11 AM

Shanny is actually using the media to his advantage. He just essentially invited the fans of QB-hungry teams to watch the games, and subsequently lobby their FOs to make a trade to get Kirk.

He also knows that a 1st round pick probably isn’t coming, but who advertises what they have for sale AT or BELOW the price the actually want? This isn’t CARMAX, it’s a world where negotiations are possible.

He probably really believes a 2nd round pick is possible, and the Skins would be smart to take such an offer. You can get a lot of great players in the 2nd round.

  47. chrisk61 says: Dec 14, 2013 10:11 AM

    shanahan is crazy.

first the backup qb as another team’s starter model has been pretty much invalidated by failures of flynn and schaub.

second alex smith an established veteran qb who got sf to nfc champ gm went to kc for only a 2nd rounder

third, shanahan refers to skins as “this organization.” sounds like he is trying to distance himself from the team.

what a mess in wash ! i love it.

  50. banlarson says: Dec 14, 2013 10:13 AM

By even indicating he could get something for Cousins tells teams two things. First, that after 2 years of having Cousins on his roster he isn’t a guy he wants to keep around, and second, you always start out asking more than you think you can get, so the real price is more like a 2nd-3rd round range.

Cousins and all these backup wonders like Flynn in GB, all look good against team in mop up duty that have no game film against. Flynn threw for 500 yards against Detroit, how’d he look the 2nd time he played them?

Washington is a joke just like the rest of the NFC East.

Yeah man. Firing a head coach in year 4 of a 5 year plan, and in year 4 he put a top 10 offense(ranked ahead of Seahawks and 49ers) on the field with a 1000 yard rusher and 1000 yard WR with still 3 games to go……..cold piece of work.

Changing a culture is very hard. That’s why I find Singletary’s work with the 49ers so impressive. He immediately changed the 49ers culture. The 49ers became a physical, tough disciplined and relentless team almost overnight when Singletary took over.

Gruden did the same with my Raiders when he was here.

This is exactly what I thought when they shut down RGIII for the rest of the season. But its one thing to strategize this way, its quite another to announce it to the whole world.

That’s just plain stupid, but speaking of stupid, the Vikings are in desperate need of a QB. They can’t draft one to save their life (see Gino Torretta, Chad May, Travaris Jackson, John David Booty, Joe Web, and Christian Ponder just to name a few. ) Plus they have a history of trading draft picks for players (see Hershel Walker). A match made in heaven.

I definitely am not a fan of Shanahan, but the bile and hate from those clueless Redskins fans who mindlessly bragged on how they were going to win the Super Bowl this season while dismissively dumping on those teams who are now leading in their quest for the playoffs sure is FUNNY!!!

Now that reality has again set in that the Redskins are doomed to again be spectators in the post season, how can anyone second guess the future of Cousins if he plays well? You only need to look at the huge paydays Kevin Kolb and Matt Flynn ended up getting based on a few good games to begin to understand that there are not enough above average QBs out there including the college prospects. Keep in mind the most successful young QB is now Russel Wilson and yet he was not good enough for all of the teams until Seattle gambled a later round pick on him. So how would any of these casual fans or even professional coaches know what Cousins really have until he can prove it on the playing field? Rag on, Redskins fans in your perennial unhappiness cause the end to your misery is NOT in sight and RGIII will never be the same prodigy he was in his rookie year.

I thought I was right. I smelled the owner and shanahan getting together and basically thinking, if RGIII gets hurt his trade value plummets. If we play Cousins and he does well, we kept RGIII safe and his value is still good and we can get a ton for Cousins, a win win for us.

  85. skinsfan91 says: Dec 14, 2013 12:41 PM

I can definitely see Arizona in the mix for a starting QB. But a first rd. Pick? That’s a stretch.

  86. gfcf42489 says: Dec 14, 2013 12:53 PM

Just a way of boosting RGIII’s already fragile ego. The last thing RGIII wants is a QB controversy heading into next season should Cousins play very well during these last 3 games. Shanny has assured everyone that Griffin is still “the man” in DC and Cousins will be shipped out in the offseason.

  87. xli2006 says: Dec 14, 2013 1:18 PM

The same organization that inked Albert Haynesworth to a $100 Million Dollar Contract might have a slight problem with valuation of a players worth.

  88. deepfriedrabbit says: Dec 14, 2013 1:22 PM

Anyone hating on RG3 in a post about Kirk Cousins is obviously jealous and upset that their organization doesn’t have a franchise quarterback for the next 12 years. Or maybe you do have a franchise quarterback, but everyone would still rather talk about RG3. Either way, you’re jealous.

  89. greg2geez says: Dec 14, 2013 1:31 PM

You’re right MBS NFL teams won’t overpay a backup QB who has a couple good performances in meaningless games. Sincerely, Matt Flynn & Kevin Kolb

  90. thegreatgabbert says: Dec 14, 2013 1:32 PM

If the draft were held today, Washington would have traded the equivalent of 5500 draft value chart points for Griffin. Meaning that they gave up the value equivalent of Griffin (2600) and Luck (3000) in the deal.

  91. themightywhitey says: Dec 14, 2013 1:44 PM

Anyone hating on RG3 in a post about Kirk Cousins is obviously smarter then the people pulling the strings for Washington ……….griffin is a below average QB at best he will be returning punts in Canada in the next 2 years …WATCH !

  92. nice2meetumarco says: Dec 14, 2013 1:44 PM

Red Lobster’s strategy is to get a 1st for Cousins, then turn around and ship it, along with 2015 and 2016 1st rounders, for their own #1 pick from the Rams and draft Bridgewater.

    You heard it here first.

  93. ghostofgilchrist says: Dec 14, 2013 1:52 PM

Right, NFL teams really learned their lesson on overpaying for QB’s that have a good start or two.

    Scott Mitchell
    Rob Johnson
    Kevin Kolb
    Matt Flynn

Kirk may not draw a 1st if he plays well…but someone will overpay, maybe a 2nd + another pick. The desperation for a competent QB in this league is too great.

I wish the late Al Davis was still alive so he can see what was going with Shanahan and the mess surrounding him. I bet he would have some interesting stuff to say..R.I.P

The information in this article is incorrect. It says the ‘Skins do not have a 1st round pick next year. They do.

  96. leevi98 says: Dec 14, 2013 2:24 PM

First off ….let’s get the facts straight..media always reports Skins gave up 3 #1 s and a #2 for Griffin. That is completely false and it’s funny how people don’t consider the pick used for Griffin. It was actually 2 #1 s and a #2. If they traded 3 they wouldn’t have had a pick to take Griffin. They swopped #1 s with the Rams so they DID NOT GIVE UP 3!! They gave up 2.

Also adding people forget really quick that it’s only the first round pick they are missing not the entire draft. Since when is the #1 so dire of a need most first rounders are busts and high priced. The meat of your draft is 2 thru 6. So don’t forget they might not have the first rd pick but the rest of the draft will high round picks starting in the 2nd. So haters go ahead and bash but at least do it with facts.

  97. clarencewhorley says: Dec 14, 2013 2:30 PM

I know I am in the minority and I am not a Redskins fan but if I was I would want Shanahan back for one more year. This year was a disaster but you have been playing with 18 million less dollars than everyone else.

Shanahan thinks the offseason is very important for RG3 growth. Ok, so lets see it. Spend the 18 mil on defense, if you can trade Cousins go and do it and draft defense. And if next year RG3 stinks then you fire Shanahan.

If RG3 did tear his acl or something and miss this offseason he would be done in Washington. Why would you want to risk that. He just missed the offseason were every coach says players make the biggest gain. If he missed 2 in a row it would be all over for him as a special player. Just like Derrick Rose is all done as a superstar in the NBA

  98. laserw says: Dec 14, 2013 2:51 PM

Well, if Cousins does well, then the Gimmick becomes expendable and ship him off for whatever they can get for him.

Cousins will be the superior mid-long term option for the Redskins – even if he has a rough last three games – he has all the upside that Nick Foles with the Eagles has.

We’ve already seen Cousins read more receiver options in 1 quarter this year than the Gimmick has done in 11 games – losing 8 of them.

  99. steves11 says: Dec 14, 2013 2:59 PM

“If an NFL team wants to spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback this offseason, that first-round pick will be spent on a player like Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles or Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, not Kirk Cousins”

While its understandable that a first round draft pick is going to be spent on a college hotshot, rather than a backup NFL player, the message that’s sent by that statement is that “once considered mediocre, always considered mediocre”. So if a player hasn’t developed by the time he’s 22 years old, he never will? I understand the line of thinking, but not sure I agree with it.

Umm, no. The skins did give up 3 #1s and a #2 for Griffin. In order to get Griffin, they used the #2 plus 1st rounders in 2012, 2013, 2014.

By your logic drafting Andrew Luck did not cost the Colts a #1 since they didn’t have to trade up for it.

What you’re *trying* to say is that they did not give up 3 #1s (plus a 2nd) to trade up, which is true. They gave up 2 #1s (plus a 2nd) to trade up. But Griffin still cost 3 #1s and a #2.

    shanahan is crazy.

first the backup qb as another team’s starter model has been pretty much invalidated by failures of flynn and schaub.

second alex smith an established veteran qb who got sf to nfc champ gm went to kc for only a 2nd rounder

third, shanahan refers to skins as “this organization.” sounds like he is trying to distance himself from the team.

what a mess in wash ! i love it.

    hail you losers !!
    ———-

For the millionth time Matt Schaub was not a failure for the Texans. He had a very good career for them and most teams would have traded a first rounder if they were guaranteed production like he gave the Texans in 7 years:
    64.8% completions, 22816 passing yds, 123 TDs, 74int, 91.8 QB ratings

Your logic is faulty. It doesn’t matter what the Skins got back the simple fact is they traded their 2012, 2013, and 2014 first round picks + a second rounder away. The fact that they got back a 2013 first rounder doesn’t change that. I don’t know how this nonsense came about that we only traded 2 first and second for RG3 came from but it makes us look bad and it needs to stop.

  108. macker1283 says: Dec 14, 2013 4:48 PM

Unfortunately, it’s probably wishful thinking. Cousins lasted until the fourth round of last year’s draft because NFL teams didn’t think he had first-round talent, and a few good performances in meaningless games won’t change that.
    —————

A team this year traded a 1st round pick on Trent Richardson….a running back. I’m pretty sure there will be one or two teams out there that have trash for a QB (Jaguars, Browns, Vikings, Texans, Titans, Bucs, Raiders, and Rams, i.e. the worst teams in the league) that might give him a try.

It’s to be expected, all the hate the Skins are getting. The amount we gave up for RGIII. All the hype surrounding him. People love to build people up and then tear them down. Also with Logical, who has an uncanny ability to get under people’s skin. I still believe in Griff. Give him an offseason and a more complete team. If we had a half decent defense and special teams, we’d definitely have 3 or 4 more wins.

  111. thesteelskirt says: Dec 14, 2013 5:00 PM

raiderlyfe510 yea cousins can get rid of the ball quick and knows his reads in the west coast but how do you stop the west coast offense? Press man coverage and flood the underneath so he has to go outside or over the top and cousins cannot make those throws. I’m sure someone will make the idiot move and trade a second for him, heck dalton is the cousins clone had he is starting.

  112. pdxskin says: Dec 14, 2013 5:06 PM

I would be thrilled if we could get a 2nd round pick for Cousins! We have lots of needs, and there will be a lot of quality players available in Rnd 2 of the draft this year….

The trolls are out! We swapped a 1st pick with the Rams and traded 2 1st and a 2nd round pick for RGIII. Cousins will be traded, if he plays wellin the last 3 games, for a late 2nd early 3rd. If he doesn’t play well he remains on the roster for additional development. Hail!!

  115. footballfan12345 says: Dec 14, 2013 5:29 PM

  116. bigredscouting says: Dec 14, 2013 5:54 PM

paulhoss1 I disagree with the idea that the Redskins should trade RG3 if Cousins plays well in three games. Reason being, Cousins is playing the Falcons, Cowboys and Giants. These teams are tied at 26th (Cowboys and Falcons) and 31st (Giants) respectively in sacks. Both the Cowboys and Falcons are two of the worst teams as far as points allowed and yards against passing. Also keep in mind, Jason Pierre-Paul is not likely to play against Washington. Cousins plays a pretty easy schedule. It is also a much smaller sample size. Not that RG3 is untouchable, I would just be cautious to trade RG3 or Cousins away. I would, however, welcome a quarterback competition.
