Cardinals need overtime, but survive in Tennessee

mendenhall AP

With four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals led the Titans 34-17. But the game wasn’t even close to over.

The Titans scored 17 points in the final 3 minutes, 17 seconds to send the game into overtime, only to lose when a Jay Feely 41-yard field goal in overtime gave Arizona a 37-34 win.

The Cardinals have been winning with defense all season, but this was a great game for the Cardinals’ offense. Carson Palmer completed 20 of 30 passes for 231 yards, with a touchdown and no interceptions. Andre Ellington again showed he’s one of the NFL’s most exciting playmakers at running back, carrying 10 times for 71 yards and catching four passes for 87 yards. Rashard Mendenhall gave the Cardinals two rushing touchdowns.

The Titans’ offense had plenty of big plays, too. Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 36 of 58 passes for 402 yards and four touchdowns, although he also threw two interceptions. Kendall Wright had a big day, catching 12 passes for 150 yards.

The Cardinals are still long shots to get to the playoffs, but winning this game was an absolute must to keep their slim hopes alive. The Cardinals did what they needed to do, and their playoff hopes remain alive.

Note: Seahawks eliminated from the list for taking PEDs

Carson Palmer’s 100 QB rating and 65% completions was huge…. but… his 9 yard pass on 2nd down in overtime and Mendenhall’s 15 yard run were the game winners.

This game should never have been this close. Worst game by defense all year – and by the zebras….they basically used different sets of rules for the two teams. Go (Cardiac) Cards

No matter what Fitzpatrick does, he always ends anti-clutch.

Refs were super special in this one.

The last 5 minutes of the game gave me flashbacks to the 2007-2009 Clancy Pendergast Cardinal defense. Ugh.

Not going to be able to play like that against the Hawks. They’ll kill the Cards if that happens.

It’s funny seeing that out of the 12 comments or so, almost half of them mention the officiating. Pretty pathetic that Phoenix teams ( Cardinals & Suns) always have referee complaints. Most of these idiots really have it imbedded in their head that David Stern hates them and that officials have it out for the city. HANDLE YOURS AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE REFS.

    Allegedone,

So phx fans are the only ones that complain about officiating? Everyone complains about the officials. The league is even pretty much admitting they’re officiating isn’t that great by going to centralized replay. It’s hard not to think there isn’t something fishy going on when there is 4 penalty flags for first downs on one drive with very little contact. Larry Fitzgerald is also one of the most respected players in the NFL and he never gets the same ticky tack calls the Titans got on that drive. That being said, the officials are not perfect in any game and there will always be complaining by ALL fans. Not just Phoenix fans. Fans complain because they’re passionate about their team.

Well the officiating was horrible…are you not allowed to notice, or just not allowed to mention it?

Business was handled. Doesn’t diminish how one-sided the calls were. Pathetic. Just like your post.

I told Cards fans this offseason that Palmer is still plenty good. He was the Raiders best player last year but got an unfair bad rap. Just another mistake made by McKenzie & Co since taking over in Oakland.

Bruce Arians is making a strong case for winning Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Andy Reid is still probably going to win it due to the huge turnaround from last year, but Arians has done a very fine job as well.

The NFL must have issued the word to the officials to ensure that the Cards do not soil their playoff plans. The one sided officiating have now shown themselves in the last 3 games (Eagles, Rams, Titans) of trying hard to alter the outcome of the game, being successful in one and nearly reaching their goal of eliminating the Cards in the other two.

Even the TV commentators are pointing out the one sided jobs being done by the officials, especially when Fitzgerald is held on every play with no call s being made to where a call with be made against the Cards if the defender even breathes on the opposing player.

The Titans seemed almost embarrassed by the many one sided calls that gave them a TD when that drive contained 5 first downs given them by penalties. The Titans knew the fix was trying to be made by the refs and that is why they reacted almost squeamishly to the extra downs and free yardage the officials were giving them. The NFL must be really desperate for the playoff match-ups they want when they go out and scheme so openly to have their officials try to produce the winners of the games.

The local AZ TV sports guys actually just said, “The Cards clinch a playoff berth by beating Seattle and San Fran, and Carolina losing, and… and…. and”.

    LMAO….

Cardinals fans are morons. 2 games left. Seahawks and Niners. LOSS & LOSS. Goodbye.

Look how bad the previously-solid secondary was in their first game without the Honey Badger and tell me he doesn’t deserve DROY.
