The Chiefs have been winning all season with defense. But as they head for the playoffs, their offense is making the rest of the NFL take notice.
Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles had a historic day today, catching eight passes for 195 yards and four touchdowns and also adding a touchdown running, becoming the first player in NFL history with four receiving touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in the same game. And quarterback Alex Smith had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 on 17-for-20 passing, for 287 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. The Chiefs blew out the Raiders, 56-31.
The Chiefs’ defense did allow plenty of yards and points, but Kansas City doesn’t have much to worry about defensively after a day on which the Chiefs forced six turnovers. This team is rolling on both sides of the ball.
Kansas City is still a long shot to catch Denver in the AFC West, and so the Chiefs will probably have to win three straight January road games if they want to get to the Super Bowl. But the Chiefs look like a team that can make a lot of noise in January.
