Dolphins take down Patriots 24-20

Getty Images

The Dolphins gave their playoff chances a big boost on Sunday afternoon and they also warmed the hearts of the Denver Broncos.

Michael Thomas, signed off the 49ers practice squad last week, intercepted Tom Brady in the end zone with one second left to play to give the Dolphins a 24-20 victory. That bumps their record to 8-6 and would put them in the sixth playoff position in the AFC with a Baltimore loss on Monday night. It also means that the Broncos are still in position to grab home field advantage in the AFC.

That wouldn’t have been the case if the Patriots won and they had a good shot at doing that. Tom Brady got the ball with 1:15 left to play needing a score, a situation that has worked out for Brady plenty of times in the past. As he racked up throws to Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, it looked like Brady would put another notch in his comeback post. Three incompletions inside the 20 left the Pats with just one chance and Thomas, who previously knocked a ball away from Amendola in the end zone, made the play.

The Patriots also had a chance to protect a lead in the fourth quarter after an Edelman score, but Ryan Tannehill took the Dolphins 60 yards in nine plays after Stephen Gostkowski’s kickoff went out of bounds. He hit Marcus Thigpen for 14 yards to put the Dolphins ahead, his third touchdown pass of an excellent game. Tannehill was 25-of-37 for 312 yards overall, shaking off four sacks to get the Dolphins as big a victory as they’ve had since Tony Sparano’s first season on the sideline.

New England’s box score doesn’t make it seem they missed Rob Gronkowski that much as Brady threw for 364 yards and the Amendola/Edelman duo had 23 catches for 270 yards. Three trips into the red zone that didn’t result in touchdowns told a different story, though, and the Patriots’ failure to get those scores kept them from sliding ahead of the Broncos.

  1. Pats can’t expect Brady and the Offense to bail them out every game.

Their defense is absolute trash and it will be their downfall come postseason time. All this talk about home-field advantage and “Brady for MVP.” If the Bengals win tonight they are the #2 seed and Pats have to play in the first round for the first time since 2009. Not good

  2. Nice to see the NFL referees not hand the game to tom brady and the cheating patriots with a bogus call (like last week against Cleveland).

  3. I’m sure the story of the game in the eyes of the nfl and patriots fans will be how the patriots lost because of their depleted offense. The truth, though, is that the dolphins played the last and most important minutes of the game without their top three CBs.

  4. monster win for the Phins. I read about Thomas getting signed last week and couldnt believe we got him. with all the criticism Ireland gets…he deserves a lot of credit for landing this one. Phins up!

  5. No cheap calls by the officials, let the players decide it, results in no last minute Pats victory this time.

Miami’s getting hot at the right time of the season. Great coaching, good moves by GM, have allowed them to overcome injury and adversity.

  6. Hey, Pat Fans… there was a lot of chirping going on a few days ago. What’s that saying about counting chickens???

  7. That’s as good as any playoff win as far as I’m concerned. Despite controversy this season, the dolphins control their destiny with a Baltimore or Cincinnati loss.

  8. Bad play calling at the end by the patriots. They kept going for a fairly long touchdown when they only needed five yards to shorten the field.

Pass interference should have been called on one of those throws.

I don’t know how the patriots drove down liked they did when. You know the ball is going to two options. Brady is good.

But they are not good enough to beat denver. They can’t score touchdowns enough

  9. Miami could have been, and normally would have been called for pass interference on that last set of downs. But this was a good no call. This would be a much more common results for the mystical Brady Belichick teams if the refs just let the players decide the game. That being said it was a classic game and NE played pretty well all things considered. I think both corners being out for Miami really aided the 4th quarter production though. I thought the refs did a really good job in this one and were a non factor. And how weird is it to have a kick off out of bounds late in the 4th, HUGE mistake!

  10. This was a fantastic win for us, another nail-biter to be sure but a great win. Sorry Tommy boy, you and The Hoodie will have to wait a bit longer for that AFC East title…

  11. Nice win Dolphins. Not quite the result I was hoping for but man what a freaking game.

Win or lose there is NO quit in this duct tape and band-aid Patriots team. Most fun Pats team to watch since the Matt Cassel season….

Oh well…cowboy up and on to Baltimore…

  12. There SHOULD have been a flag against the Panthers. There SHOULD NOT have been a flag against Cleveland.
There SHOULD have been a flag on 3rd and goal against Miami, defender made a play on humanawai, not the ball.

The flag against the Browns did not make or break the game, although it helped. They were shoving it down with a minute left, w/o the PI, they still would have gotten to the goal line.

But now officials are afraid to give the game away again, when the gift last week against Cleveland was only a reaction created by the league after the stupid call against Carolina.

Not to worry, Denver now has to face KC and then NE in the cold in the playoffs. I’ll take it

  13. If Manning throws that interception the narrative would be how he choked. Brady does and the story is he has brought them back in the past, defense couldn’t hold, Gronkowski is out, blah, blah, blah…

  14. The Cincinnati Bengals would have a two game lead in the home field advantage race…. if it wasn’t for the patriots getting bogus pass interference calls.

  15. Man , oh man , what a game . . . my heart can’t take too many more of these . . . As a longtime Fins fan , it’s more important that we may have helped Denver retake the number one seed than it is that Miami makes the playoffs. Being the sixth seed — if we’re able to get it– ensures that we’ll play at (presumably) top seeded Denver , so we’re not likely to go very far in the playoffs. But to give Denver the number one seed and make New England go on the road greatly decreases the likelihood that the Patriots will advance to the Superbowl , and that’s what it’s all about for Dolphins fans now.

    Patriots are done! Overrated!

Oh wait they are 10-4 and in first place and as of now still the second seed.

    Can you say Moron?

  18. New England has a bigger problem than dropping behind Denver — they just dropped to the third spot behind Cincinnati too. No first round bye potentially for a team that needs one badly.

  19. The flag against the Browns did not make or break the game, although it helped. They were shoving it down with a minute left, w/o the PI, they still would have gotten to the goal line.
    ———————————————————–

Am I reading this right, did he really say that call didn’t make or break the game???

  20. Its time for the league to start recognizing the Dolphins as a legitimate playoff team. Tannehill has thrown for 300 yards and 3 TDs the last two weeks. He is legit. Enough with the Ireland and Philbin bashing. We are 8-6 and soon to be 10-6 and in the playoffs. Go Phins!!

  21. Don’t overdue it Dolphins fans. Miami hasn’t beaten New England since 2009, and the Dolphins needed 25 million dollars worth of Patriots players on IR to eek out a four point win at home. Big whoop.

  22. You guys do realize the Pats almost won by throwing to only 2 receivers!?! Both slot receivers at that. Imagine if Dobson or Kembrell would’ve played…either one, the Pats would’ve won the game. The Dolphins needed this win more than the pats. Yes home field is important but more than likely we still get a bye and a game at home. Our defense?!? Horrible, can’t cover a running back in the open field. For those bashing Brady or our offense, open your eyes we played great, giving that we threw to only 2 receivers and handed it off to Blount most of the game. Oh, Dolphims corners were out? Solder was out on the last drive and look how different the line play was. Cut the crap you hater, non football fans. Think for once whenever the Pats lose.

  23. Any real New England fans on here understand. Denver now has to face KC then NE in the cold. Homefield advantage may have been lost, but Denver has a brutal stretch in the cold in the playoffs.
    I’ll take it

Changing of the guard in the AFC East. It’s Ryan Tannehill’s division now.

    Brady Era R.I.P.

Why do we here stupid stuff like Thalia when NE Loses?

  26. After watching the Dolphins today & in light of their remaining schedule, I’d give them the edge over the Ravens for the 6th playoff spot in the AFC. I hope I’m mistaken.

  27. Patriots organization is the poster child for the saying “Penny wise, pound foolish”

How’s the decision of not signing Wes Welking looking now?
Their D is a horrible as horrible can be. They wont pay anyone who’s worth their money. Why would any premium talent (especially on D) would agree to take less and play for them?

Yes, they have injuries. Which team does not have injuries. Their D linemen did not even touch Tannenhill after the game for a handshake.

    I am not a patriots fan/hater – just a sports fan.

  28. So if the Dolphins make the 6th seed they’ll visit either the Colts or the Bengals!?!
The Dolphins already beat them both and Miami can definitly beat either of them again!!!
Should be an awesome game either way!

  29. Good game phins! from a pats fan! but these comments are ridiculous! Ah im sittin here laughing at the constant hatred and bozos on here talkin mad crap!! im not gonna sit here and try to critisize the dolphins team, but fans come on! yall act like yall won the superbowl after a regular season game!! players were crying!! 32. We’ll done Phins! As for those who keep saying that the pats are presuming that they already won the game which has not been played yet are delusional. BB and TB12 are the first ones who acknowledge their team’s weakness. Same with their fans… We know that we are in precarious situation even at the beginning of the season, thus the elation when we win the improbable ones. But you haters just are stuck with your pathetic narrative.—- cincy looks good now… I kinda like their spunk. Sorry Chargers we fell short. Would have been nice if we could had returned the favor.

  33. This loss is on TJ Ward of the Browns. If it wasn’t for his illegal cheap shot to Gronk last week, Gronk would have been in this game and the Pats would have won going away. Ward should be fined, suspended and out of the NFL for as long as Gronk is.

Well…. a tough one … or… a dominant Bengals blowout victory against pittsburgh’s 24th ranked RUSH Defense with 2-3 additional passing touchdowns by Dalton.

  40. I have a question for the pat fans that think Miami should have been called for PI at the end of the game. On the long pass to Wallace in the 4th did the NE DB get there too early, face guard, and hit Wallace before the ball got there? The refs were consistent and that’s all you can ask for, unless I guess you used to getting bailed out by the refs.
    LMAO!

  41. The Fins were handed their winning TD by a PI call that, even Phil Simms said, was a bad call. Then, the Fins commit a PI in the end zone on the Pats’ last drive and there’s no call. The NFL giveth and the NFL taketh away. Onward, Pats, to the playoffs.

Giants had even more critical injuries in 2011. Keep the excuses coming.

  49. When patriots win a game on a questionable call everyone loses their mind, when patriots lose a game on a questionable call(s) it’s stop crying. Patriot hate on here is funny. Hard to win when you’re only options to throw to are Edelman, Amendola, Collie and a 3rd string tight end. That’s not even an exaggeration that’s legit who they are have with Dobson, Thompkins, Gronk and Boyce hurt.

  50. No late game help from the officials this time New England.

The ref’s must have raised their asking price and Belichick wouldn’t pony up.

    Too bad…so sad.

  51. dolphins fans can laugh all they want….all this does is help you get into the playoffs for a trip to foxboro in the wild card round. hint – it won’t be 80 degrees there, and miami looks very beatable.

  52. Congrats to the Dolphins for hanging on at the end to beat our B-Team. Also nice to see the Pats haters coming out of their holes after a 4 point loss to declare an end to the Patriots era. Won’t be easy winning any games without 3 of our top 5 players but hey, just get in the playoffs and we’ll see what happens.

  53. Since when has the MVP award gone to “who has done more with less”or who has overcome the most? It has always gone to the player that has had the most outstanding season. Luck has his team in the playoffs with a bad o line, lost the best wr, and no running game and no one is campaigning for him to win. Tannehill lost 2 starting o linemen and gets sacked multiple times every game and could get his team to the playoffs. Brady has been impressive especially the second half of the season but no way is he the mvp.

And I bet they were doing other forms of cheating too. The fact they must have stopped cheating is really the only plausible and sensible explanation why in 2 short seasons they went from a Super Bowl team to the steaming pile of equine excrement that you call a football team today….

  55. Congrats to the Dolphins for hanging on at the end to beat our B-Team.

Well… hard to call a Patriots team with #12 starting a “B-team”…. just being real. The Dolphins were slightly better today and won, no excuses.

  56. All good things come to an end patriots fans. You had a great run. Great job cheating your way to 3 super bowls. It’s over now though.

  57. We’ve all heard the “changing of the guards” stuff for the past five years. It takes more than one game, people.

New England will still win the division and get a game at home. If they are the number 3 seed and win, that will set them up to play Cincinnati, a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since the Icky Woods era. Anything can happen.

Did you know that the History Channel is showing Super Bowl 42? It comes on right after the dinosaur show, in a block called Ancient History. Fitting, isn’t it? Like the Giants fans, the dinosaurs don’t have much of a present or a future so they too yearn for days gone by….

  75. I still don’t know how good we are, still think think we are playing above ourselves or at least doing just enough to win. We always play well as the underdogs but the next couple of weeks we will be expected to roll over the Bills and Jets and sadly this is were we might stall. Too many sacks and not enough points will be our downfall. Pleasantly surprised at how tough this team is. While Brady is still in our division NE is the daddy whether we like it or not. But at least we can take comfort in that we have a good Coach and a very tough smart QB that could be the man for years to come if he doesn’t get whacked too much.

  76. Giants 5-9 third place.

You can’t spell ELIminated without ELI!

    Eli
    Loves
    Interceptions

Should he change his name to elINT?

  77. 2 2 <<< the thumbs downers are right.

ELI = Elisha Loves Interceptions is much better. That is his real name after all.

Hey did you know that you can't spell LOLInterception without ELI!

  78. Wow. Just wow. The pats are 10-4 if you listened only to these bridge loving trolls you would think the pats are 4-10. I never realized a 10-4 first place team was such a horrible thing to be thank you guys for opening my eyes. Since we started playing Miami down there in December it has always been a tough game for the pats. Once your body is used to a daily high temp of 20 degrees and you go play in 80 degrees that’s gonna be a tough day. I haven’t heard any true fan cry about all the injuries they’ve got but facts are facts nobody has as many injured starters as the pats, and oh yeah still in first place regardless. It’s you spygate, tuck rule , asterisk trash talking dummies that cause us to be obnoxious fans. You trot out the same old tired arguments every day but guess what? First place. We will probably now out in the second round but for now first place. Now what’s your address I got a gift basket to send you.

The Pats in the Brady era have always had a tough time winning in Miami. Even in their 14-2 2004 season, they inexplicably lost to the 2-14 Dolphins on MNF. Some nobody named Wes Welker killed the Pats in that game.

As for the playoffs… it’s anyone’s for the taking. There is no dominant team in the AFC, it is totally wide open. So for a team like the Pats held together by duct tape and band aids, that is their saving grace. We will see what happens in a few weeks.

As a Pats fan honestly… I don’t know if I want to see the Dolphins in the playoffs. May sound a little paranoid but division games in the playoffs give me pause. (See 2010, Jets) They’re a good team…and we saw what happened today.

THE PATS ARE SUPPOSED TO GET THOSE CHEAP CALLS!!!!!!!!!!!

patriots had 1 flag today for 2 yards. one flag. and all their fans are complaining about a non-call. wow.
    ———————

And they have the nerve to call people who speak facts like these “trolls” which is even more astounding. Then again, these people don’t deal with losing well. They like to deflect, talk about other teams or bring up previous seasons instead of addressing a loss TODAY. Had they won, they would be genuflecting in front of Brady like they do with all his other sham “comebacks”

Your tears really are delicious. Nom nom nom.

  83. The Cincinnati Bengals would have a two game lead in the home field advantage race…. if it wasn’t for the patriots getting bogus pass interference calls.

    —-

Or…there’s always the possibility the Bungles could get rolled 30-20 by the Steelers tonight, making such home field advantage talk moot for the time being.

  84. Sorry haters. The Pats can’t lose the rest of this season. Either they win and get a ton of credit or they lose and the loss doesn’t really count because they’re playing without Gronk, Wilfork, Mayo, Kelly, Vollmer, etc, etc, etc. I love it. #NoPainNoMatterWhatHappens

  85. If the Pats lose out…. and the dolphins win out…. big if but not impossible…. the dolphins could very easily clinch the #2 seed in the AFC with tiebreakers over the bengals and colts….. How crazy is that

Here’s a list of only but just a few of the multitudes and legions of folk who I really think could get an interception off Eli Manning.

Ty Law, even at age 39

Deion Sanders, even at age 46

The 2002 Bucs secondary. They sure were having plenty of fun against Gannon in the SB so I bet they could do it again.

    Rich Gannon himself. Why not?

    Tom Brady

Wes Welker…nah he’d drop it if it was a big moment

    Bill Belichick

    Tom Coughlin

    Miley Cyrus

    Justin Bieber

    Gisele Bundchen

    Discuss.

  87. Finally, the cheaters lost. They must have used up their payola budget for refs last week in Cleveland.

In looking thru the posts below, there are 3 times the likes versus dislikes when comments like this are made. Hey, Patriots. Wonder why the vast majority of people hate your team! LMAO.

  88. Brady showing his true colors, walking out on his presser. I would have loved to have been in the locker room after the game to witness his tantrum.

  89. SHOULD the phins make the playoffs, they will go on the road (like NE yesterday did yesterday) and get trounced away from the friendly warm confines of Miami..It came down to the last possible play at the last possible second. Won’t shake out that way with Dolphins on the road in the playoffs

NE has no excuse, they lost, but at least they are basically in the playoffs.

A HELLOF ALOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY FOR the Injury faking Giants or the Dolphins…
    ELI sux…

No one expects the Dolphins to roll anyone.
    Slow your roll

Yes. This is bothering me more and more when I think about this.

Being someone with honor and integrity and love of the NFL and the game of football I can no longer in good conscience consider Mr Wrights Giants Super Bowl victories as “clean”. Thus going forward will no longer refer to them as such. Only tainted titles gained from cheating. Which they were.

  92. I hope the Fish are legit.

The Pats really could use some genuine competition in the AFC East. Smacking down the rest of the AFC East year after years is cool but it’s boring now.

We thought the competition would be the Jets but they turned out to be just comic fodder, and I think even Fin fans would agree with that. And the Bills are the Bills. Nuff said.

Bring it Dolphins. I hope you’re for real. I really am looking forward to a great rivalry renewed.

  93. Nice cute uniforms. How many other she males does the doll fins have on that roster. We all saw the two bad calls that gave that game away. I love reading all the jealous pats haters. A true sign of respect envy and inferiority .

  94. While watching that presser of Brady’s it struck me that I have known children in their terrible two’s that show more maturity, dignity and composure than this crybaby sore loser!

This is a grown man? This is the leader of the NE Pats? I am embarrassed for his team, and his family.

I hope just based on that “performance” that they lose the next two games and end up out of the playoffs altogether, or better yet, end up somehow playing the Phins in the playoffs and losing once more to them.

Those of you that think the Dolphins can’t play in cold weather must have missed that game in Pittsburgh last week.
