Vikings go deep to beat the Eagles 48-30

Matt Cassel AP

The Vikings might have been short-handed, but their replacements came up big.

Playing without running back Adrian Peterson, his backup Toby Gerhart and half their secondary, the rest of the Vikings responded with an impressive 41-30 win over the Eagles.

Symbolic of the day for the Vikings was star defensive end Jared Allen. Not only did he have a pair of sacks, but he also stepped in to long snap on a punt after Cullen Loeffler was injured.

Their effort against an ostensible playoff team was a solid showing for embattled coach Leslie Frazier, who is under the kind of scrutiny you’d imagine when you follow a playoff berth with a 4-9-1 mark.

Matt Cassel was spectacular for the Vikings passing for 382 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a touchdown as well. Running back Matt Asiata had three touchdowns, which obscured his 1.7 yards per carry average (30 carries for 51 yards)

The Eagles dropped to 8-6 with the loss, snapping a five-game winning streak that had vaulted them to the top of the NFC East.

They had some flashes in the second half, but never got running back LeSean McCoy established. McCoy finished with just eight carries for 38 yards, as he was outrushed by Nick Foles (five carries for 41 yards).

Ugly game. How can you give a running back that had his best game of his career last week only 8 carries? But offense wasn’t even the big problem. No pass rush, no pass coverage. Just terrible.

If you’re referring to Vikings fans, you’re right. All this great play at the end of the season is going to get you is a lower draft pick, another year of Leslie Frazier, and maybe them convincing themselves that Cassell deserves another shot instead of looking for a QB in the draft.

The Minnesota Vikings impending dynasty will hit the NFL by storm, but don’t say you didn’t hear it here first.

Talent wise, we have the best team in the NFL and arguably one of the best teams of all time (other than QB).

Once we draft our franchise QB (and we will) multiple superbowls will be coming to Minneapolis. They are setting themselves up to dominate the NFC for the decade.

Every team will start trying to emulate the Vikings in every way.
Every fan will be jealous of Vikings nation.
Every owner will be jealous they don’t own a historic future dynasty team like the Vikings.
Every coach will fear traveling to Minneapolis to face the best team to ever play.
Every other teams players wish they’d have been drafted by the superior Vikings roster.
Every GM will wish they had the drafting smarts that Rick Spielman has.

  15. Youknowimright says: Dec 15, 2013 4:37 PM

Chip reid only ran mccoy 8 times. Smart. Oh well. Finding out that you are not that good can be a difficult thing to swallow. But take a big gulp philly. Foles numbers were gawdy but he looked like nick foles lanky, missing open guys , and jittery in the pocket. Just an average qb.

No excuses for today’s game. They were outplayed in every aspect from kickoff to final gun. Fortunately they have a game in hand on Dallas at the moment so they still control their own fate in the division. Only game I’m concerned with now is the Chicago game. Hopefully they fix what went wrong today and start a new winning streak. Congrats to the Vikings, hell of a game.

  23. whhaaat says: Dec 15, 2013 4:43 PM

As an eagles fan they deserved to lose. You play passive and scared your only setting your self up for failure. If you constantly kick short and give the other team a short field doesn’t it kind of defeat the purpose. They let the other team beat the before the game even started. Then after the kickoff they played passive defense hoping the vikings would make the mistakes instead of going after them and making them earn whatever they get.

  24. dolphins4 says: Dec 15, 2013 4:45 PM

I am amazed at all the vikings fans cheering at the game today. We just lost a top QB in the draft such as possibly Carr. We will now have mediocre 5-11 seasons year after year. Especially if we keep Frazier in the name of the team succeeding towards the end of the season. How can AP cheer knowing he likely now won’t get anywhere with this team for the rest of his career? Go ahead and dislike this because of emotion although anyone can see where this is going to lead us to.

Freaking HILARIOUS. Eagles are soft. Chip Kelly has been forgetting to put testosterone in those smoothies of his. How can you lose to Cassell and a 3rd string RB with the division lead at stake? How? Easy – Eagles are soft, and will choke it all away in week 17 as they lose to Dallas and get swept for the season.

  59. whatjusthapped says: Dec 15, 2013 8:24 PM

This is a great win for the Vikings. First, they screw up their drafting position with a meaningless win in December long after their playoff hopes were dashed. Second, Cassel looks like the 2nd coming of Joe Montana, forgetting the fact that a lot of NFL Qb’s are able to light it up for 1 game, consistency is the key. This is should cause considerable debate inside Viking headquarters on what to do for next year. But just look at their roster, they have a precise route runner in Jennings, they have speed with the other two burners so what do they do, they trot out Noodle Arm Ponder for the majority of the season so as to render their best assets useless.

    Only the Vikings.

This team continues to amaze me. I used to think it was Frazier and his coaching staff driving them to play hard, but I think they are playing hard in spite of them. The team is playing for each other, AP is the leader of this team along with Allen on the defense.

Get us a good coach and a franchise QB and this is a playoff team.

  66. 13nflchamps says: Dec 15, 2013 10:22 PM

You ARE one of the worst teams in the league this year! All today showed was that you have a very good O-line. It showed that AP isn’t the GOAT. You will draft another speculative QB in the 1st round like Ponder (Manziel, McCarron, Carr) and will fail with whomever once again. Just play well next week, you idiots. Go Pack Go!

  67. huschlej says: Dec 15, 2013 10:46 PM

As a Vikings fan, I can’t get too excited. The Eagles are not a good team. They are. In first place in their division because someone has to be. It clearly can’t be the giants or the redskins. At the end of the season, either the eagles or the cowboys will thump their chest as the division champs. It’s about as big a deal as winning an ugly girl contest.

  68. joeknowsnada says: Dec 16, 2013 12:20 AM

    Okay, okay, rah rah rah.

    Here’s the deal.

Nick Foles is a good QB.

Vikes deserve a lot of credit for playing well and playing hard, today.

Eagles DEE and Special Teams were not so special, some of same caused by coaching, or lack thereof.

As Parcells always said ” You are what your record SAYS you are!” Vikes are 4-9-1, Eagles are 8 – 6. “Nuff said.”

Eagles scored 30 pts. Wow, they sure sucked today, on O, hunh? DEE was bad. First bad game in weeks.

Even a blind squirrel can find an acorn once in awhile. The Matts, Cassel and Flynn, both had the kind of days everyone thought they would/could have, on a regular basis, playing for the teams that signed them away from Green Bay and New England, awhile back, hoping they were the real deal. They are not the real deal. But, even a journeyman QB can have a career day, once in awhile. And, why not wait for Cassel and co. to make a mistake? They’ve done it, what, 10 times before, already?

Birds are ahead of schedule, as a team. They are not frauds, just over-achievers. They are playing with “house money” right now. I would rather be “frauds” chasing a playoff birth, than a team searching for an identity and a QB.

Re – Vikes. These ain’t the Purple People Eaters, friends and neighbors, one of my favorite teams of all time. But, contrary to popular belief, they DO have talent. They remind me of the KC Chiefs before Andy Reid got there.

Ah, well. On to ‘Da Bears!

Regarding your post above. I have read posts from a lot of Packer fans (who don’t seem to be trolling) that today’s win against Dallas proves that they can win against anyone. I call false. Your run defense absolutely sucks. The 2 games that Flynn came back to tie or win, the opposing offense was ripping off 7 – 11 yards per carry on the ground. This is no fluke, it is a reality. Both times, for some bizarre reason the o coordinator decides to put it in the air and stop running the ball. Musgrave will be gone next year, The team is winning despite their coaches, the draft will work itself out. Thanks for your concern though. Get your D straight, make a playoff run, then come back and troll Vikings threads
