Washington car dealership paying out $420,000 after Seahawks shutout

The Giants were eliminated from the playoff chase before Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, so the 23-0 loss only cost them a little more of the pride they’ve been hemorrhaging all season.

It cost a car dealership near Seattle more than that. Jet Chevrolet in Federal Way, Washington ran a promotion offering 12 different people $35,000 each if the Seahawks shut out the Giants with entries doled out to those who bought cars as well as those who just wanted to take a shot on the Seahawks defense. The Giants had not been shut out at home in the regular season since 1995, but there were no points to be found this Sunday.

“This is crazy,” Jim Johnson, one of the owners of the dealership, said, via Darren Rovell of ESPN.com. “We never expected that we’d actually be giving away the money.”

Johnson also said that they wanted to run the promotion the previous week, when the Seahawks lost 19-17 to the 49ers, but couldn’t get the logistics squared away in time. The dealership took out insurance, which cost them $7,000, and they’re waiting to see how the insurance company advises handling the payout of the money.
