Wide receiver Kenny Britt is widely expected to leave the Titans when this year comes to an end, a fate that’s been in the cards since before the season even started and one that has been all but confirmed as the Titans have pushed Britt out of the lineup altogether in recent weeks.
Britt was back in uniform in Week 15, though, and he caught three passes (his first catches since October) in the 37-34 overtime loss to the Cardinals. Despite that, there’s no reason to think his future in Tennessee has changed. The reason he was back in the lineup had nothing to do with his own work, but with the team’s decision to bench Justin Hunter and Damian Williams for violating team rules.
“They broke some team rules. So the consequence was that they didn’t suit up today,” coach Mike Munchak said, via the Tennessean. “I am not going to talk about what they did. It is just something we had to deal with today. You want to have your guys. We were only going to suit up four [wide receivers] anyway. The numbers weren’t a problem. It was just a matter of obviously you want everyone up and going. It was very unfortunate and very disappointing. So we move on from there.”
Hunter had more that 100 receiving yards in two of the last three Titans games, so it’s not like playing Britt and keeping the team at four wide receivers was really the same thing. Hunter didn’t talk after the game, but Williams said he was “ashamed” for letting the team down.
