Report: Saints to sign Shayne Graham

The New Orleans Saints elected to cut bait with kicker Garrett Hartley on Tuesday.

Now they have his replacement.

According to Mike Garafolo of FOXSports.com, the Saints will sign Shayne Graham to replace Hartley, who was placed on waivers after missing two field goals Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

Graham returns to the team he began his NFL career with in 2000. Graham was signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech. Graham bounced around after being released by New Orleans to Seattle, Buffalo and Carolina before finally landing a full-time job with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2003.

Graham spent last season with the Houston Texans and converted 31 of 38 field goals on the season. He was with the Cleveland Browns in training camp and spent a week with the Pittsburgh Steelers in September but hasn’t attempted a kick this season.

Hartley struggled the first half of the season as he converted just 16 of his first 22 attempts on the year. Hartley had made six straight field goals before having a kick blocked and missing another against the Rams on Sunday.

A few weeks ago, Payton brought in 3 field goal kickers to try out. This served Hartley notice that his performances would have to improve. You just cannot afford to miss “chip shots” of 40 yards or less. As a pro, you should average about 90% of those, but Hartley was in the 70s.

In pro football, it is often “What have you done for me lately?” Hartley was a great contributor to the Saints’ success in their championship season and at other time previous to this year.

The Saints had Shayne Graham ready to go before they made the decision to dismiss Hartley.

In his presser after the Rams game, Payton said other changes would be made. I am expecting one or more starters to be demoted for the Carolina game.

    Geaux Saints!

    S. Graham is accurate from short distance, but he’s 13-27 lifetime from 50+. Count on the saints going for it from that distance.

I will always remember the winning kick in the 2009 NFC championship game that sent the Saints to their first Super Bowl…Thanks Garrett Hartley and best of luck…

That’s what the Saints needed was someone who was accurate for the shorter ones. The have a longer kicker if they need something from around 60.
