Saints cut Garrett Hartley this time, also Chris Carr

The Saints had put kicker Garrett Hartley on notice before.

This time they did something about it.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints have waived Hartley along with cornerback Chris Carr. No corresponding roster moves were announced.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Monday that they were “looking closely” at many positions, but Hartley and Carr were the first ones offered up.

Cutting a kicker’s a risky move this late in the season, when the available options have been picked over many times. But after rebounding once, Hartley lost his touch again, and that was something they felt they couldn’t afford heading into Sunday’s de facto NFC South title game against the Panthers.

    That’s too bad.

Saints are making a very risky move by cutting Hartley. They better get somebody well before the panthers game. This better work out for them or there is going to be a lot of questioning and scrutiny.

Great. He waited until now to be a bad kicker instead of missing in OT of the 2009 NFC Championship game.

If you have a “double r” in your name, you’re getting cut!

Well they haven’t picked a new Kicker yet, perhaps they are hoping somebody will take Hartley and release a better option, with picking a Free Agent as the back-up option.

And just because some players get picked over or cut, doesn’t mean those GMs know what they are doing. LOTS of good football players get cut or passed over, and some of them MANY times through no fault or lack of value in who they are or what they can do. 53 x 32 does not necessarily equal the exact best football players in the world. Lots of teams make lots of mistakes on players that shouldn’t have jobs, and that makes other players who don’t have a job appear to be worth less than they actually are worth.

Dan Carpenter was free for a while, and now he’s 27/30 out of FGs, plus he’s a young guy. That’s better than what some other teams have at Kicker, including the Saints and my Lions. I’d rather have Carpenter, and he was available for essentially free.

THREE different teams released Carpenter this year before he wound up on the Bills!

Get rid of that bum charles brown too!

Getting cut must suck, but getting cut with 2 games left in the season with your team in the playoffs must really burn!

  13. tombstone7 says: Dec 17, 2013 6:22 PM

@abeboys…No to N.A. he is no longer the player that he was paid to be.

As for cutting Hartley, not a bad move, but RISKY & what kickers are out there on the street that will produce. If they were any, they would have on been somebody’s roster.

Hate to say this, but My Saints are not going to beat Carolina on Sunday. They have been very consistent in losing on the road. What will change that dynamic on Sunday? The pressure is on N.O. , not the Panthers. If the Saints wins, they were supposed to win. If the Panthers wins, it’s a brand new NFC south.

Thank you Garrett Hartley for being money in the NFCC and Super Bowl!

That would be a pretty interesting story, good idea!

  17. lesticles1983 says: Dec 17, 2013 6:32 PM

This is quite a message Payton is trying to pass on his team, that no player is safe. Hopefully it takes hold and they can win the biggest road game of the year Sunday.

  22. grndizzle says: Dec 17, 2013 6:36 PM

It’s about time they got rid of him. They can pick up just about anyone right now and it would be an upgrade. He’s missed way to many gimme’s, including last weeks 29 yarder.

  23. sactogary says: Dec 17, 2013 6:43 PM

Hey, no problem. Fourth down? Go for it. Score six? Go for two. Let the punter kick off. Who needs a kicker, anyway?

Tom Dempsey. Get the record back.

  26. paychrisjohnson28 says: Dec 17, 2013 6:58 PM

Just go for 2 every time they score a TD and instead of field goals just go for it on 4th down every drive! The Saints will be all right!

More then likely, but if he makes them 1 onside and they could have a tie or even the lead. Missing kicks is also a huge morale sucker. I would rather be forced to punt than miss a short kick.

  28. rickyspanish says: Dec 17, 2013 7:10 PM

What a strong message cutting a lousy kicker sends. I’m sure Brees is looking over his shoulder.

  29. kenny2neworleans says: Dec 17, 2013 7:26 PM

Long over due!!! Everytime he got hurt or suspended the guy the saints would bring in, john Casey, only missed 1 FG all year I believe. I understand Hartley did great in the 09 post season, but good coaches get rid of a guy early, rather than late. Ask belicheck about vinitiati. He won 2 superbowls and was let go. Hartley has struggled ever since he became a celebrity in the city. I’m from New Orleans, and would see him in night clubs all the time!

Shake the dust off Morten Andersen

  31. uglynora says: Dec 17, 2013 7:33 PM

If he makes the first kick, they don’t go for 2, take the extra point, then they try for the TD on the final possession, there’s your 11 points. A missed chip shot field goal is a back breaker.

  32. sportsbastard says: Dec 17, 2013 7:45 PM

I think they had Neil Rackers in earlier this season, I’m guessing he’s probably the one.

Time to immortalize Hartley as the guy that took the Saints to the Super Bowl.

  37. nawlinssaints1956 says: Dec 17, 2013 8:05 PM

The game plan this week will be scoring TD’s, so pick up a kicker that can make XP’s. Saints 35, Panthers 17.

You simply cannot miss chip shots. No Excuses. Sorry bro, thanks for the memories.

The Saints already brought in 3 kickers to try out for them recently. This served Garrett notice. You need to make about 90% of your attempts 40 yards or closer in. Hartley was averaging in the 70s. All kickers know that the shorter a kick is (chip shots) the higher you need it to go to avoid being blocked. That should be much easier since you don’t need the distance.

The Saints had in mind who they would get to replace GH before they dismissed him.

They need to make other changes as well, because if they win at Charlotte they win the South outright. These upcoming games are important.

Neil Rackers was awesome the past four years. Just awesome. Look at his stats, they are insane.

Btw, Fartley was total crap after his Super Bowl run. He single-handedly derailed the Saints season and a probably #1 seed during the 2010 season with a missed field goal from 27 yards. Saints have been calling for his head for years. I’m glad he’s gone!

I didn’t know you have exclusive rights to the Saints and Sean Payton’s kicker evaluations lol
