Steelers place LaMarr Woodley on injured reserve

Ryan Mundy, LaMarr Woodley AP

A calf injury has ended the season of Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley.

The Steelers announced today that Woodley has been placed on injured reserve after he suffered an injury to his right calf in Sunday’s win over the Bengals.

This is Woodley’s second calf injury of the year; he previously missed three games with a left calf injury.

Woodley had started all 11 games he played this season and is second on the team with five sacks.

The Steelers signed linebacker Jamaal Westerman, who was cut by the Bills last week, to take Woodley’s place on the roster.

and for gods sake can we get ben a receiver who is over 5’9.. sanders, cotchery, brown etc.. little guys. how bout a nice 6’4 receiver for the redzone. little guys are ok from 20 to 20 but in the redzone give me a guy that can go up and make a play in the endzone. these little guys cant jump over my mom and shes 5’6!!!

  4. doctorrustbelt says: Dec 17, 2013 3:30 PM

    Woodley doesn’t care.

    No playoffs either way.

  5. DiscountMescan says: Dec 17, 2013 3:31 PM

As shocking as Pouncey hitting IR. This dude has been injured since he signed that contract. I bet he pulled a ligament in his thumb answering the call from management.

  6. notwithkubiak says: Dec 17, 2013 3:34 PM

He’s also done with that team… betting they cut him next year and eat some money.

  7. tavisteelersfan says: Dec 17, 2013 3:41 PM

    Woodley has got to go.
Move Ike to Safety and Clark out.
    Keisel … done.
Polamalu restructured … Steeler until the Hall of Fame calls.
    Sanders, out.

Get a couple of high pick (1 & 2) corners.

  8. bigbenownsthenfl says: Dec 17, 2013 3:42 PM

they kept a lot of guys about a year too long. after the 8-8 season they should of made some moves. don’t be afraid rooney, tomlin, Colbert. sometimes ya gotta make harsh decisions. there have been many signs. lack of turnovers for 3 straight years. and we all know how big that stat is. late game losses because the defense couldn’t stop teams on the final drive. against ravens, raiders, and god almighty being tebowed! etc…..

“these little guys cant jump over my mom and shes 5’6!!!”

I don’t know anyone, little or big, who can jump over a 5′ 6″ person.

Ray “God” Lewis, best linebacker to ever play the game of football. He also played for the greatest franchise ever assembled. Total class act, unlike many steroid using Steelers LBers.

@crown…ok ill simplify it for you since somehow you took it literally! out jump a 5’6 person…better?

  13. footballfan01 says: Dec 17, 2013 3:56 PM

Other than that little murder thing, Ray Lewis sure was the living embodiment of “class”.

@ac540. I think everyone “died” when “jumpball joe” won the super bowl! believe it or not there has been mediocre QBs that have won a super bowl before. Namath, esiason, flacco, dilfer….LOL dilfer

  16. SmashMouthFootball says: Dec 17, 2013 4:08 PM

Steelers can’t do this yet. They need him to beat the Browns so, you know, they can claim they “own the division” as our friendly trolls did yesterday. Those little victories are cute and keep the trolls warm at night. Meanwhile the Ravens and Bengals who are still relevant get to fight for a post season.

  17. geektriumvirate says: Dec 17, 2013 4:12 PM

Ravens also won with Trent Dilfer

I can see 3 of the 5 being sent packing bigbenownsthenfl, Kiesle and Clark for sure, gotta keep 1-2 out if Troy, Taylor, and Wiidly for leadership. Troy gas struggled a little with his tackling but been almost the player he was a few years ago. Taylor has been beat on some plays but he is still a very effective cover man, he has a lot of one on one. Woodly is most likely done, future is bright with Jobes and Worilds, but he can still have an effect on a game.

    And then denying it.

Major disappointment. Was a total beast until he sprained his calves walking down the stairs after signing his massive, cap-destroying deal.

    Gah.

When the hell did Esiason ever win a Super Bowl????

  24. bigbenownsthenfl says: Dec 17, 2013 4:26 PM

I think Woodley whole problem was he couldn’t stop eating. he muffin topped up to where his legs couldn’t hold all that muffin weight! if it wasn’t knee, it was calf, then hamstring, then hamstring again. mitchitized got it right. major disappointment!

  25. crownofthehelmet says: Dec 17, 2013 4:31 PM

Wood had some memorable splash plays over the years, but he’s been the most disappointing big-sign in recent memory. I say thank him for his service and move on.

Though an injured Woodley would still start on the Ravens, Bengals, or Browns defenses.

Hey that’s great, the Steelers already have guys completing the “great march” to their couches to watch the playoffs and Super Bowl from and the season is not even over yet.

Bengal player goes on IR after a helmet to face cheapshot –

Steeler player goes on IR after what? – tying his shoe?

    Who’s tougher?

Hey OLCAP, old news try, its forgotten. Say something that matters for a change.

  31. olcap says: Dec 17, 2013 5:21 PM

Sorry andrederay, just like Spygate, it will never be forgotten. And really, it’s worse because it was done live, in front of a nationwide audience during a reverent holiday game.

Your team is indelibly stained forever. You will have to learn to live with it, just as the Patriot fans have had to do.

  34. Moudabo says: Dec 17, 2013 6:57 PM

Big disappointment. Woodley needs to get healthy and stay healthy. Something he hasn’t managed to do ,
    since signing that big contract.

  35. steelcityjoker says: Dec 17, 2013 7:33 PM

Good, can we cut/trade him in the off season. He had one good year….now it looks as if he is just going through the motions. Dont know if its a physical or mental thing with him.

  36. whodey420 says: Dec 17, 2013 8:13 PM

It’s an old injury! Didn’t he tear his vagina a couple years back running to the table to sign that contract?

  37. maalea says: Dec 18, 2013 12:17 AM

Boy, sometimes these jokes just write themselves.

  38. blackngold4life says: Dec 18, 2013 1:22 AM

I say save the $ only if they tie up Worilds 1st..Nice run Lamarr but we don’t need another beat up overpriced player who can’t earn his paycheck..or reduce his pay if he wants tostay for another year or 2

  39. steelerben says: Dec 18, 2013 10:22 AM

Woodley’s run is over. He had a few great season, but he isn’t staying healthy, nor is he getting to the QB. Paying linebackers elite money when they don’t produce is something the Steelers just don’t do. They barely even pay linebackers elite money when they DO produce.

Keisel is likely gone as well, although it might be worth giving his beard a one year deal.

I have no idea how Taylor has kept his job the last three years, and will be baffled if he comes back again next year.

Moving Clark while he still has any tread left on the tires at all makes sense with Shamarko waiting in the wings.

The only way you can keep 43 is to restructure his deal and get some speed in the secondary to protect him. I like what they are doing with moving him to linebacker in the nickel and dime sets. He’s not what he was, but he’s still Troy and he’s better than more than half of the free safeties out there right now.

The Steelers should be looking to draft at least one, possibly two corners, a REAL nose tackle, a pass rushing linebacker, a receiver over 6’1″, and someone to develop at free safety.

  40. crownofthehelmet says: Dec 18, 2013 10:44 AM

olcap, the last thing that will be remembered about the Big Ben/Tomlin era is the sideline incident. The first thing that will be remembered and associated with the Brady/Belicheck era is Spygate. The sooner you come to terms with that fact, the better off you’ll be.
