Dolphins claim Chris Owens off waivers

Early this week, the Dolphins claimed a cornerback off of waivers to help shore up their ailing group at the position.

On Wednesday, they made another move at the position. Chris Owens was claimed off of waivers from the Browns, joining the recently acquired Jalil Brown on the cornerback depth chart while Justin Rogers, signed after washing out in Buffalo and Houston, was erased from it.

Owens will be reunited with Brent Grimes in Miami. The two men spent the last four years together as members of the Falcons secondary. They went different directions during the offseason, with Owens landing in Cleveland for 13 games and 22 tackles.

Grimes is battling a groin injury and Nolan Carroll hurt his knee against the Patriots last week, although both of them have been able to practice in a limited fashion this week. Safety Chris Clemons and cornerback Jamar Taylor joined them as limited participants, making the need for healthy bodies in the Miami secondary all the more pressing.

Whoever is able to make it to the field on Sunday probably won’t have to deal with Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson. He’s unlikely to play after going to California to be with his family following the death of his mother.
