McCourty relishes chance to eliminate Ravens

The Patriots and Ravens don’t reside in the same division.  But it feels that way.

They’ve met six times since 2009, three times in the postseason.  On Sunday, the Patriots can take a major chunk out of Baltimore’s chances of making it to the postseason.  And Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty looks forward to that.

“[T]here would be no better feeling than us beating them Sunday and . . . we eliminate their season right there,” McCourty tells Tom Curran of CSN New England.  “For me and for a lot of my teammates there’d be no better feeling.  So it’s gonna be key to come out and play well on Sunday.”

The only problem with that logic is that a Baltimore loss won’t eliminate the Ravens from playoff contention.

McCourty admitted that he hates the Ravens “[a] little bit,” and that his feelings are “close” to those he has for the Jets.”

The Patriots and Ravens have met in each of the last two AFC title games.  The two teams feel destined to meet in the postseason again.  Unless, of course, the Pats can deliver a near-fatal blow to the Ravens’ chances of getting there.

McCourty is one of the best safeties in the NFL and he can still play corner as well.

You don’t tug on Superman’s Cape Devin, you may have awaken Joe before the 2nd quarter now. Last time Brady beat Joe was the Lee Evans game, the So called Overpaid one is gonna beat the big bad tommy boy and his band miniature receivers AGAIN Sunday evening.

  7. patriotinvasion says: Dec 19, 2013 8:52 PM

McCourty has been a Pro Bowl free safety this year, but he doesn’t say much. I kind of like him throwing out some fight for a change, even if it is slightly inaccurate.

So, does this mean there are some other teammates don’t feel that way?

this pathetic idiot on a decimated defense is giving out bulletin board material yall

  10. patriotsarespygaters says: Dec 19, 2013 9:01 PM

Bold prediction is Flacco on a bum knee will throw for at least 4TDs and 400 yards on this hapless decimated defense that can’t stop a nosebleed

lol Jason campbell the browns 3rd stringer torched your defense

Did Bellichick give him permission to talk? His mouth might have just knocked him off the team, Patriots way style.

This should be a good game. Two teams that play each other every year. It’s practically a divisional opponent. We hope everyone comes out of the game severely injured.

Love the Pats/Ravens rivalry. It’s nastier than the old Colts rivalry but I respect the a Ravens more than the Jets. Its kind of the best of both worlds.

  16. securb2013 says: Dec 19, 2013 9:08 PM

If the Ravens win and I think they can, I hope they attribute their motivation to McCourty’s comments. It will take a team of surgeons to remove Belick’s shoe from his back quarters if it happens.

If the Ravens were going to show up this season, there was no better time to do so than in Week 1, at Denver.

McCourty has it right: the Ravens are a joke.

  20. crewdawg says: Dec 19, 2013 9:17 PM

McCourty is going to walk the walk sunday. One of the best safeties in the league. Pass defense has improved leaps and bounds ever since he switched to safety.

    sschmiggles says:

Maybe, but good cornerback > good safety, so his career has been dialed back a bit.

After all, when a guy bombs at corner, they try him at safety. But when a guy bombs at safety, they never try him at corner.

  22. bullcharger says: Dec 19, 2013 9:22 PM

I’m glad someone on the team said something. A win eliminates the chances of the Ravens winning the division and since Manuel isn’t starting for the Bills, it likely means that the Dolphins will win, so the Ravens will almost be done with a loss.

The Ravens are certainly good enough to win, but why shouldn’t the Patriots want to beat them badly. It’s good!

  23. dualprime says: Dec 19, 2013 9:26 PM

McCourty had just finished watching film of the Raven’s practice when he made this comment.

You’ll have plenty of time after your early playoff elimination to make pansy ass commercials Sparky – given your own media and Brady call Baltimore your nemesis – correctly since you’ve gotten beaten down in the 2 of the last 3 playoff meetings and are a dropped pass from 0-3 I’d shut my pie hole

  26. tedmurph says: Dec 19, 2013 9:34 PM

  29. thegreatgabbert says: Dec 19, 2013 9:41 PM

  32. thesteelskirt says: Dec 19, 2013 10:07 PM

McCourty sucks and if it wasn’t for Brady they would be an 8-8 team. Injuries and depleted talent is catching up to them.

  33. nflwatcher says: Dec 19, 2013 10:07 PM

I see this as pretty weak ass bulletin board material. He’s is almost tipping his cap to a Ravens team that he given the Pats big problems during his 4 year career (2010-3)

The Ravens are the defending champions who knocked the Pats out the playoffs last year, why would you expect anything less of player wanting to slay that dragon or not respect a rival who didn’t feel that way.

  34. dkinphx says: Dec 19, 2013 10:11 PM

Balt vs. NE, huh? Gee they’ve played each other a few times lately.

Denver and New England have played regular season games every year since 1995 except 3 years:2004,2007,2010. They play AGAIN next year and for the 3rd year in a row it will be AT NE.

There is definitely something screwy with the scheduling format when two non-division foes meet so frequently and especially when it’s an away game for 3 straight years.

As a Dolphins fan , this is one in which I win either way: If the Pats win , my team probably makes the playoffs . . . if Baltimore wins , another stake is driven through the fans of the team I can’t stand , and they’ll likely be seeded even lower. I wish these two teams could play every week !

Tom Brady has 3 superbowl rings.

3 superbowl rings is more than 23 NFL franchises.

    23 was Michael Jordan’s number.

Michael Jordans’ successor is Kobe Bryant.

    Kobe Bryant was a rapist.

Get direct TV otherwise Kobe might rape you.

  46. superpatsfan3 says: Dec 20, 2013 12:45 AM

I don’t mind him saying what he said, I just wish he was accurate that NE winning would eliminate the Ravens. If your gonna talk, at least have the facts correct.

  47. tyler200829 says: Dec 20, 2013 1:04 AM

One of the best safeties in the NFL?! LOL….you don’t watch much football do you?

  48. rockthered1286 says: Dec 20, 2013 1:51 AM

Of course he’s concerned about the Ravens making the playoffs. Just look at Brady’s numbers against the Ravens in our last 3 playoff meetings. Statistically Flacco has been far superior and has pulled in a ring and SB MVP while Thomas “Muggs” Brady hasn’t won it all since Spygate. Not stirring the pot just stating the obvious.

  49. stumpy456 says: Dec 20, 2013 1:55 AM

People don’t realize how good McCourty has been, arguably one of the better safeties in the NFL this year. He really made that transition from cornerback to safety.
Watch him play, I hate the pats but he really disrupts everything that comes to his zone. Better than his rookie year at cornerback.
People downvoted that guy above, but McCourty is probably gonna be a pro bowler at free safety this year which surprises people because everyone remembers he was a corner. I guess the we will see if he holds up well against the Ravens.

  60. thewhitehorsegeneral says: Dec 20, 2013 7:36 AM

I would think winning a super bowl would be a better feeling than simply beating the Ravens and MAYBE eliminating them from the playoffs.

Hopefully my Baltimore crew can take care of business and crank out another win. For some reason it always feels a bit more special to win over a team like the Patriots who think they are the best, has a head coach who thinks he’s God, and then some players who whine so much you’d think they own a vineyard.

Thanks for the extra motivation Devin. Now let’s hope our guys can keep their mouths shut and not give the Pats something to talk about.

  61. jmattharrison says: Dec 20, 2013 8:35 AM

I don’t see why this is even a story.

The Ravens have already clinched their division, a spot in the playoffs, and a ticket to the Super Bowl, right?

The Patriots have no chance in this game! Silly, fans.

Thank you Devin. I’m so sick of this silent crap the Patriots have been pulling for the past decade. Yes it works but this is football. We all know the task at hand. Who cares if he says it? Let’s play ball. Pats need this game to avoid the Ravens in the playoffs!

  67. baltimoresnativeson says: Dec 20, 2013 10:32 AM

So according to all the morons out there.

The Saints got a ring because of bounty gate.

Patriots got their 3 from spy gate?

Ravens got theirs from luck and the refs.

That sounds like sour grape loser talk to me. Your loser team wasn’t good enough to win, accept it. Stop trying to find other reasons than your team sucks.

  68. imbetterthanyou says: Dec 20, 2013 10:35 AM
