Davone Bess raises eyebrows with online photo

Heralded as an offseason steal via trade from the Dolphins, receiver Davone Bess has had a good but not great first season in Cleveland.  On Friday, he made his biggest headline of the year in a way unrelated to his performance.

Absent from the team for personal reasons, Bess posted a photo on Instagram that shows him lighting a cigarette (which may or may not contain tobacco) near a photo of Bob Marley and wearing around his neck a Rastafari flag.  After appearing Friday morning, the image was quickly deleted.

Per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Bess has spent most of the season dealing with a serious issue involving a family member.  Bess was excused from practice on Thursday and Friday.  The Browns are due to travel to New York on Saturday.  If Bess doesn’t make the trip, he’ll be replaced by Josh Cooper.

For the year, Bess has 42 catches for 362 yards and two touchdowns.  His catches, yards, and average (8.6) are the lowest of his six-year career.

Real hard hitting reporting here guys. You can’t even link the pic or have any clue what the issue he’s dealing with is.

    Oh, who cares.

People love to blame everything on Brandon Weeden… but… with receivers like Davone Bess, Greg Little, and Chris Ogbannaya… what do you expect?!?

Davone Bess = 2nd most drops in NFL

Chris Ogbannaya = 6th most drops in NFL

Greg Little = 7th most drops in NFL

Good not great year???!!!!…….The guy is horrible at playing the Wide Receiver position in the game of football. Soo Bad, worst year ever. Supposedly known for his great hands, he has consistently dropped key balls thrown his way.

    Umm…yeah…that’s a joint.

  6. ravenswhat says: Dec 21, 2013 11:02 AM

Well, he’s no genius that’s for sure.

  7. varnbo says: Dec 21, 2013 11:10 AM

Having a good year- don’t make me laugh. Bess stinks, he drops passes in crucial moments continuously.

  8. metspeed21 says: Dec 21, 2013 11:25 AM

He appears to be such a good, hard working guy that I cheer for him. But like barnbo says, he has consistently dropped balls at crucial times and he may be personally responsible for at least one loss (Chiefs) and maybe more.

Hopefully, he can get his mind right because the Browns gave up a 4th rounder to get a guy who has cost them games.

You ever see anybody light a cigarette like that?

  10. 1rockyracoon says: Dec 21, 2013 12:29 PM

Common sense isn’t always so common. Teams should be able to fine players for “Lack of Thinking” incidents.

Sticky fingers should help a receiver.

  12. fbjunkiedc says: Dec 21, 2013 1:07 PM

They do have a lot of drops. But they do have a guy named josh gordon who catches everything!

  13. hummer53 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:14 PM

Now we know why he drops the ball all the time.

  14. j0esixpack says: Dec 21, 2013 1:14 PM

I’ve got no problem with a football player using a little medicinal marijuana when going through a stressful time

… just have the common sense not to post it to Instagram (you’d almost think he was stoned at the time.)

  15. ballboy48 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:27 PM

I bet he’s done in Cleveland anyway. Dude has dropped so many balls, it’s insane! Good thing for Josh Gordon, and Jordan Campbell! They should throw money at Eric Decker, this offseason, to compliment Gordon!

  16. ballboy48 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:28 PM

    *Jordan Cameron

  17. overkil2 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:34 PM

I don’t know. He made a lot of crucial catches in Miami with terrible QBs. Maybe when players go to Cleveland, they just perform worse.

  18. jshawaii22 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:55 PM

Well, he did play his college in Hawaii… known for the best da kine going.

Wouldn’t doubt he’s finding himself again. Pot is not good for sustaining a high level of performance, in fact, from reading the fan quotes, he’s been on it for at least a year, as his downhill slide from Miami started about a year + ago.

  19. dartwick says: Dec 21, 2013 1:57 PM

Every pertinent detail to this totally inconsequential story is missing other than the players name.

  20. 69finfan says: Dec 21, 2013 2:25 PM

As a fin Fan I was disappointed they traded D Bess away but from what I’m reading on here it sounds like it was a good decision and the timing was right. I didn’t realize he had dropped off so badly.

  21. hehateme2 says: Dec 21, 2013 2:31 PM

Miami was smart to let Bess go. They have upgraded their receiver’s in a major way.

Hartline, Gibson, Matthews and of course Wallace have been better than Bess.

  22. shlort says: Dec 21, 2013 2:34 PM

He must be bucking for a fine/suspension. You know the league is going to ask him for some urine after that picture showed up all over the interweb.

  23. natelan says: Dec 21, 2013 2:35 PM

I don’t understand why the NFL tests for marijuana. It’s not a performance enhancing drug. In some states, it’s legal.

Sounds like a disingenuous scare tactic by the NFL to keep black men in line.

  24. raidersftw says: Dec 21, 2013 3:19 PM

Make an article about a photo and don’t link anyone to it brehs

  25. natelan says: Dec 21, 2013 3:42 PM

Even if he was smoking a phratry… He appears to be doing it from home, in the picture… Not at a club, not while driving, not while in public at all…

No problem with this at all. He using a recreational drug which has no performance enhancing qualities (except possibly mental enhancement) at home.

People should mind their own damn business.

  26. natelan says: Dec 21, 2013 3:43 PM

Apparently I’ve never typed “phatty” into this iPad before.

  27. tontoepstein says: Dec 21, 2013 8:47 PM

Unintentionally funny stuff, natelan. Apparently “natelan” is the pseudonym for Ricky Williams.
