Stephen Jones says Jerry will lead Cowboys to a championship, sooner than later

StephenJones Getty Images

On the same day Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it’s so much harder to win now than when he bought the team nearly a quarter-century ago, his son declared that Jerry will lead the team back to glory, sooner than later.

“We’re gonna win a championship sooner than later with Jerry at the helm,” Cowboys executive V.P. Stephen Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan Dallas/Ft. Worth on Friday, via the Dallas Morning News.

The comments are telling, in two ways.  First, they represents an admission of sorts that Jerry wasn’t truly “at the helm” for the first three championships the Cowboys won during the Jones tenure.  Second, they underscore the widespread belief that Jones would prefer to be the captain of a barely-buoyant boat over riding sidecar to a coach who picks the food, buys the groceries, kicks the asses, and takes the names, possibly not in that precise order.

Jimmy Johnson did just that, building a team that won a pair of Super Bowls with Johnson as the coach and a third with Barry Switzer coaching the team Johnson built.

Since then, the Cowboys have been as middle of the pack as they can be.  As pointed out by the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are 135-135 since 1997, with only one playoff win.

To get another playoff win, they first have to get to the playoffs.  At 7-7 in 2013, they may have to wait at least another year for that second playoff win since late December 1996, the year after the Cowboys won their most recent championship.

Great, so can he please elaborate on what qualifies as sooner than later? Does that mean only the 2013 season, or can he just tell us what years qualify as sooner to him so we know when the prediction has failed if it does? Just give us the approximate cutoff date so we know how to qualify what the boast even represents.

Heck I’ll just let him have until 2020 to win. I’m in NO hurry for the Cowboys to win the title, so take your time, you can have 8 more shots to make good on that promise and then I’ll comment then and say well you were right Stephen.

    Wait . . What . . .

  8. alewatcher says: Dec 21, 2013 12:29 PM

Not gonna happen. Not until there is competent coaching and management, anyway. And when you consider the salary cap problems they have yet to confront, it looks even worse.

  9. theseekeroffun says: Dec 21, 2013 12:29 PM

As a long time Cowboy Fan, I am really sick of this circus. No one doubt’s Jerry’s business acumen as his past accomplishments speak for themselves. However, this is a business that he clearly does not fully understand.

The Sun may rise from the East before Jerry wins a Super Bowl as GM.

  11. bhindenemylines says: Dec 21, 2013 12:30 PM

The only way Dallas is going to win another SB with JJ as GM is if the game is played in Fantasy Land.

    And I’m a Cowboys’ fan.

What happens if he is wrong? Will he put his position on the line ?

    Pointless statement from lil Jerry.

    Better question.. what happens first

    a.Cowboys win a super bowl?
    b.Tony Romo leaves team?
    c.Jerry Jones dies?

    im guessing its not a

What other owner (and their silver spoon scions) feels the necessity to blab about their franchise on a daily basis? The Murchison family owned the Cowboys for 27 years, and I never once heard or read about their assessment of the team’s chances in any year. Nope. They turned it over to Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt and Tom Landry, real football people, and the franchise flourished. They held on by letting go. Unfortunately, letting go is unknown to Jones.

  21. trefkennedy says: Dec 21, 2013 12:35 PM

Watch we are gonna finish 8-8 for the 3rd straight year and miss the playoffs when the division was there for us, then adding insult to injury the final 4 games we faced back up QB’s and still could not win smfh

  22. seatownballers says: Dec 21, 2013 12:35 PM

Want to go 8-8 for twenty years straight?
Hire a Jones as your gm. Only employs puppet coaches and surrounds himself with yes men.
Can’t draft. Over spends in free agency, needs a scapegoat after every bad season. Horrible budgeting.
    Best of luck cowboys fans

  24. chawk12thman says: Dec 21, 2013 12:36 PM

“Sooner” would be in 2014 and I just don’t see that happening. It could come to be, but my money on it will be “later”, if at all. As currently set up, I think they may not even get into the playoffs anytime soon.

  25. purplengold says: Dec 21, 2013 12:36 PM

    “sooner” implies “not this year”

  26. bucrightoff says: Dec 21, 2013 12:36 PM

I used to hate the Cowboys, but now they’re so irrelevant to anything that matters that I’m mostly annoyed and indifferent towards them

  27. gordfrancis32 says: Dec 21, 2013 12:42 PM

The cowboys need to do 4 things : 1) Get rid of Garrett-good OC, terrible HC, 2)Find a qb that doesn’t choke 3)trade some of that talent for better leadership 4) Get a real GM or when you hire a HC, give them control of the team. Any great HC will not go to Dallas bc Jones has to much control and not enough football knowledge to build consistent winning teams.

  28. chuckchillout says: Dec 21, 2013 12:43 PM

I wish Stephen had to stake his inheritance on this before he could be allowed to say something this ridiculous.

Words are wind, and right now the entire Cowboys organization is one gigantic, room-clearing fart.

The Seahawks, Saints, 49ers, Panthers, Packers, Broncos, Pats, and Ravens…………….yep, the Jones brain-trust is going to out-maneuver all of those franchises, “sooner than later”, and snag a Lombardi.

The Texans will have a better record than the Cowboys next season.

  29. gbrim says: Dec 21, 2013 12:44 PM

Father and son spend considerable time praising Jerry for his fine work, but if it was truly worthy of praise it would be others doing the compliments. I’m not a Cowboy fan, in fact I kind of enjoy their struggles, but all this talk from ownership is annoying even to me.

Let the results speak for themselves. Let the praise come from the outside. That would be a nice Christmas present for all Cowboy fans.

  31. w2lucky says: Dec 21, 2013 12:47 PM

    Dear Stephen,
The performance of the Cowboys since they won the Super Bowls, speaks for itself and directly reflects how you and you Pop have mismanaged the team. This is a business. Any business that operates with such a poor record demands a change in management. If nothing changes, nothing changes. You and your Dad are the problem, and having to publicly endorse your own father just shows how sad the state of affairs are.

  32. beerbudsnbevo says: Dec 21, 2013 12:49 PM

You know what’s a really scary thought fellow Cowboys fans….

This idiot is gonna take over the reigns when the Crypt Keeper finally exits…

I was at the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Ca. over the summer. My wife and I went to a great restaurant in Ventura, right up the road from Oxnard.

And here comes the Cowboys bus, with all the bells and whistles… then Stephen Jones rolls in the restaurant with all of his leaches, and holds court like some kind of big shot.

They don’t care what us Cowboys fans think, fans who were around 15 years before his senile old man bought the team in 89′…

It’s all about their egos. That’s why I haven’t bought one thing Cowboys in over 3 years..

    Sad.

  33. 6ball says: Dec 21, 2013 12:49 PM

  34. bullcharger says: Dec 21, 2013 12:50 PM

  39. willycents says: Dec 21, 2013 1:11 PM

The Cowboys beat the Eagles in 2010 so that makes it two playoff wins since their last Superbowl not just the one from 1996.

Not that it makes a huge difference would just be nice if you’re gonna enter facts, make sure they’re correct.

  44. justwinbaby29 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:20 PM

Cowboys are about where the Raiders were in 1995. Maybe they’ll have a nice three year run (and fall into a Rich Gannon) but good days are not ahead for them. Jerry will only get worse like Al did. The difference is Al actually knew football at one time.

Jerry and co seem to be in denial about their ability or lack of in selecting players and want to blame the coaches. Well how many bad coaching hires are they going to make before they realize the people hiring the coaches are the problem. Everyone brings up their 500 record over the past 15-20 years but the only reason they are even 500 is because of What Parcells did while he was here, and no coach of his caliber will want to work for jerry again

This is the same guy who said we have the secret sauce to win a championship so I am taking this latest gem with a grain of salt. What else is their to do but try and be optimistic. Not sure what the plan is for defense your paying Dware about 2 million per sack thats a bit much and it escalates next year. Tough choices coming for Dallas hope they finally get it right and turn this thing around. Go Cowboys I love Jerrys passion just wish it yielded some wins this year has been brutal.

Meddling owners with huge egos never get it, Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, the late Al Davis and Bidwell sr. all made or make their teams less competitive when they make football/personnel decisions. The league needs to intervene at some point because of blackouts and waning interest.

  58. ripster65 says: Dec 21, 2013 1:48 PM

And by the way, sooner counts from the point in time Dallas won their most recent SB, which is the 1995 season. So if winning it 20+ seasons later is sooner, then yeah I guess he will win it sooner than later.

I have been a Cowboy fan all my life. But not so much the last few years. Jerry thinks because he has the money he knows more about football then the guys who no and live football. Jerry has become the new Al Davis of football. He doomed the Cowboy fans for another 6 years by giving Foldo Romo a 6 year extension. They have no chance of winning a Super Bowl with Romo at the helm. Romos time and field management is very suspect he will never by a great QB he keeps getting in his own way. Jerry change your QB and get a defense and you will win a Super Bowl.
