Rex tells Jets players he thinks he’s getting fired

Rex Ryan, Woody Johnson AP

When Black Monday rolls around, a lot of eyes are going to be focused on New York.

Of course, Jets coach Rex Ryan has known for some time he was on thin ice, so he took the bull by the horns last night.

According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, Ryan told his players in a team meeting that “the word on the street” was he was getting fired, so they should “ride with” him the last two games.

Now whether there’s actually anything behind it, or whether Ryan’s trying to motivate his players for two meaningless games down the stretch remains to be seen.

Neither would be outside the realm of possibility, which makes it an intriguing strategy on Ryan’s part.

Jets aren’t getting a better coach. They should actually give the dude some players.

You Should Of Had This Feeling Last Year Rex. Overrated!

  5. wnstonchill says: Dec 22, 2013 12:27 PM

He’s just trying to get their hopes up so they’ll play better…..

Rex Ryan is going to lose his job because he was left to coach a team with very few playmakers because of a lousy front office from the previous regime. The Jets defense is very good and in large part due to Rex.

Idzik probably wants his own guy but Rex will get another shot down the road. As a Pats fan, Rex has committed foot in mouth multiple times but he can coach a defense and I won’t be sad to see him go. He has a 6-8 record with a team that should be 4-12

  7. sogooda says: Dec 22, 2013 12:30 PM

Did the players say “Yah, that’s what we’re hearing too, coach!”

  8. eagleswin says: Dec 22, 2013 12:32 PM

No QB, no WR, no long term RB solution .. He should be happy he’s getting fired because the GMs never put him in a position to win.

Dallas has an opening For a defensive coordinator. Just saying

Well, look on the bright side, Jet fans:

Lane Kiffin is just sittin’ there.

I personally think Rex is a great coach. I think a lot of others would too had he not made the SB guarantees.

Come to Philly and replace Billy Davis.

If he is terminated, he’s probably better off. All of you calling him overrated, what’s YOUR NFL coaching record?

  16. enochmh2 says: Dec 22, 2013 12:41 PM

Great defensive coordinator, will get a job before he can clear out his office

  17. onthewagonsince90 says: Dec 22, 2013 12:42 PM

First honest thing I have heard out his mouth in four years.

  18. gavriloprincip33 says: Dec 22, 2013 12:43 PM

It’s been time for a change for years!

  19. badmoonrison says: Dec 22, 2013 12:43 PM

Go ahead and fire him then, Jets. Who do you think youre going to get thats going to be better? There are no decent options out there this year. Any team that fires their HC this year is going to have slim pickens. Unless you have a coach who is completely inept, like say Shanahan, forget it. Stick with what ya got…

  20. gudy2shoes says: Dec 22, 2013 12:47 PM

He was fired the minute he got Sanchez hurt. He just didn’t know it.

  21. syphermce says: Dec 22, 2013 12:48 PM

Redskins could use a new defensive coordinator. Be happy to have you in Washington Rex!

  22. realfootballfan says: Dec 22, 2013 12:50 PM

It would be one of the biggest mistakes a franchise has made in the realm of Jacksonville firing Tom Coughlin 10 years ago if he is fired. Rex is a very good coach who’s worked miracles with mediocre rosters.

  23. logicalvoicesays1 says: Dec 22, 2013 12:52 PM

Lions should fire Schwartz and hire Rex as the head coach and rob as the defensive coordinator

  24. jakec4 says: Dec 22, 2013 12:52 PM

It’s all about the QB and Rex can’t put one together. He’s a good coach, but his biggest flaw will be his undoing. He might be pretty good for a team with an established QB having problems on defense.

    Rich Kotite is available.

  26. meatcarroll says: Dec 22, 2013 12:54 PM

The most undeservedly overhyped coach of this era. Has accomplished nothing but talking trash without backing it up.

We’ll Rex, who knows, you also predicted a couple Super Bowl victories and you were dead wrong about that…

  31. dkalev says: Dec 22, 2013 1:06 PM

    Gmen take notes:
go get this guy or spags for DC
go get Jason Garrett as qb coach for Eli and knowledge of cowboys
go get OC who isn’t as predictable a chick flick
    profit

  32. tictoccpthook says: Dec 22, 2013 1:07 PM

Good luck for good coach. Don’t answer the phone if the Cowboys call.

  33. harrisonhits2 says: Dec 22, 2013 1:08 PM

My pick for their next coach is Jim Mora, Sr.

  35. wryly1 says: Dec 22, 2013 1:11 PM

Are we worried that if Ryan gets fired we might be hearing even more of him on ESPN? Hard to imagine another team that would want him at their microphones.

  36. pftstory says: Dec 22, 2013 1:13 PM

This is about the lamest comment a person can make… “If he is terminated, he’s probably better off. All of you calling him overrated, what’s YOUR NFL coaching record?….

And your NFL coaching record is what? It better be damn good or your own comment (imply7ing he is not overrated would be as invalid as anyone elses.

  37. pftstory says: Dec 22, 2013 1:16 PM

Doesn’t telling the players you are a lame duck fly in the face of the general belief that players do not play for lame duck coaches?
We hear it about why a coach with only one year remaining needs to be extended or replaced (Shannahan, Coughlin). We hear it about bad teams who know the coach is toast at year end.

Strange play by Ryan. Does he think the Jets will want to win one for the Gipper?

  38. wnstonchill says: Dec 22, 2013 1:49 PM

Bless Rex’s heart! This is his Christmas gift to his players. How thoughtful of him.

  42. jeremy2020 says: Dec 22, 2013 2:25 PM

Damn, it took Rex this long to figure that out?

  43. jw1991 says: Dec 22, 2013 2:34 PM

Okay…Ill begin with this, I am a jets fan.

Let me say one thing about Rex Ryan..I love the intensity he bring but let’s be real. He inherited the team from Eric mangini his first year. His draft picks for the most part have been horrible…
    Kyle Wilson
    Vlad ducasse
    Mark Sanchez

I’m sorry but there’s better out there.

  44. jw1991 says: Dec 22, 2013 2:36 PM

    Not to mention milliner.
