Jason Garrett says Tony Romo’s status is unknown

Despite the report that Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is out for the year with a back injury, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says Romo’s status is unknown.

Garrett said at his press conference today that Romo is getting treatment on his back and his status for Sunday’s game against the Eagles has not yet been determined.

Of course, Garrett and the Cowboys are better off making the Eagles prepare for the possibility of facing either Romo or backup Kyle Orton on Sunday. So it wouldn’t be surprising for the Cowboys to delay declaring Romo out, even if there’s no chance that Romo can play.

According to a report from Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Romo was diagnosed with a herniated disc and will need surgery. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Romo will miss Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Eagles and any postseason games the Cowboys play in.

Garrett confirmed that the Cowboys plan to sign another quarterback, a strong indication that they expect to need a backup to play behind Orton, while Romo sits on the sideline for Sunday’s must-win game.

c’mon, Dallas. Don’t try to reel this back in.

Romo gets, and deserves, a lot of crap but the man is as tough as they come. Didn’t he play through a busted spleen or broken ribs a few years back?

I’m a Cowboys fan and have wanted Romo out for a while. I will give him credit though, he has always played hurt.

And this is what drives me nuts about football….the reports are out there, this isn’t 1945 where stuff like this would be kept secret, and yet the boys call a press conference to basically lie.

Don’t really matter if Garrett himself plays QB this Sunday. Just doesn’t matter.

First of all Dallas fans ( and all fans) Romo is really good!!! As a 50 year plus Eagles fan it does sound like he is out. From all my years of watching football I think this “could be” a good thing for Dallas. Why? Because Orton is a good veteran QB. This will force Dallas to run first and pass second which is what they should have been doing for the last three years.
The Cowboys are a much better offensive team that way. If Murray gets a lot of carries and gets some good yardage then this will make Bryant and Witten even more dangerous.
Trust me I am an Eagles fan and want them to win badly!!! The downside for Dallas is their horrendous defense but maybe they can pull it together for one big game but that will be hard.

  28. jobo50 says: Dec 23, 2013 6:15 PM

Like the article reads. Of course they are going to say its day to day and will evaluate his situation. Its done with most injuries in the NFL. If he has a herniated disc there is no way he can play. Can’t believe Cowboys do not have a 3rd QB on their roster for the year but then again its the Cowboys. Jerry knows best!!!

Quick someone call Matt Flynn and let him know he doesnt play for GB..but instead has really been on the Vikings the last two weeks. Maybe he can call his agent and get a raise for that great game he played vs. Philly when he didnt have AP or Gerhart……

    to quote Fred Sanford…

    “you big dummy”

  31. craigkintexas says: Dec 23, 2013 6:24 PM

Hope Tony doesnt play if in fact he has a herniated disc. Bad things can happen! Ditch the macho deal and think of your family and future.

  34. Shinnbone says: Dec 23, 2013 6:42 PM

I for one would love to see Romo play and play well in the Eagles game if not for anything more then to laugh at the four letter network and their “LITTLE MAN” who knows it all.

  35. truebluelaredo63 says: Dec 23, 2013 6:43 PM

I’ve been watching the game & the boys play since I was 5 & the game is won & lost by the offensive & defensive line & who wants it more. It’s about heart, grit & playing it through until the end. Romo has got both heart & grit but his health is more important. The team that brings the heart & grit will win. Go Cowboys time to some heart & grit.

  37. mancave001 says: Dec 23, 2013 6:49 PM

I say again…what a liar. Garrett looked like a circus clown up there, trying to deceive the media and next week’s opponent. He wouldn’t even admit he had a herniated disc.

In other news, Dallas fans saying Orton is not a downgrade and that this is a good thing are positively delusional.

  38. silverhornet says: Dec 23, 2013 6:53 PM

NBC Execs are begging Donovan McNabb to come out of retirement and play for Dallas. Only thing that would save the ratings.

  41. zam0854 says: Dec 23, 2013 7:16 PM

This game may be hyped up this weekend but Shady McCoy could possibly set the single season rushing record against the Cowboys..or Foles throw for another 7 TDs.

Yes, I watched the first game against Dallas and Foles didn’t play well. Eagles also lost to the Vikings in a sling fest. Bottom line is any Sunday anyone can win (i.e. 2008 Steelers and 2010 Giants). But I believe Eagles show up and put up huge numbers for the division championship.

  42. vusnu says: Dec 23, 2013 7:22 PM

As a person who has experienced significant back pain and has done significant research on this, I can see unequivocally that a herniated disc does not automatically call for surgery. Back surgery should always be the option of last resort as more often than not, it doesn’t work. I’m wondering if the Cowboys aren’t blowing some smoke with misinformation to Adam Schefter on this one.

  43. Youknowimright says: Dec 23, 2013 7:31 PM

Pulling for lots of non contact football injuries for the eagles.

  44. janvanflac says: Dec 23, 2013 7:37 PM

If they are playing games to make the Eagles prepare for both it’s a waste of time. there’s no film on Orton from the last 2 years and I doubt that they are going to change their offense around for him.

bigger issue is Dallas D vs Eagles O. Even in the loss to the Vikes, they put up 30 points.

  45. jerrahsucks says: Dec 23, 2013 7:55 PM

Tebow, Tebow, Tebow, Jerrah should do it just to take the heat off for have an idiot for a coach. besides, Tebow has beaten out Orton before.

  46. skinsfan91 says: Dec 23, 2013 7:56 PM

Dallas needs to trade a first for Kirk Cousins right now.

  47. sportsguygerald says: Dec 23, 2013 8:01 PM

Dallas needs a playmaker at QB because their defense sux so bad. This isn’t the same Eagles team they beat earlier in the year. That was Foles first start and he got a concussion early in the game. He’s a whole lot more better now and McCoy is running like a wild man. Eagles defense put so much pressure on the Bear’s QBs last nite and the Bear’s OL is better than Dallas. Afraid Orton will be in for a loooong nite, but nearly as long of a nite as the Cowboy defense.

  50. gustwo says: Dec 23, 2013 8:11 PM

Whether Romo plays or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is the Eagles level of intensity. If they play with the same passion, concentration, aggressiveness, and level of excellence they displayed against the Bears, then be it Romo or Orton will make little difference. I believe the Cowboys are a talented team, playing at home, with their backs against the wall, and it’s going to take the Eagles absolute best in all phases to beat them.

  51. shaggytoodle says: Dec 23, 2013 8:12 PM

They have an inferiority complex with Washington. The Cowboys want to show them they can be dramatic too.

  52. grandpoopah says: Dec 24, 2013 3:17 AM

I absolutely cannot wait for Dez’s temper tantrum Sunday night. He’s gonna make TO look like Tony Dungy when the Birds drop 7 TDs on his squad Sunday night. And the best part of all will be the post game press conference where Jerry and Jason trip all over their tongues making excuses for their prima donna wideout. GO BIRDS!
