Robert Woods on ejection: “You got to be a man sometimes”

Miami Dolphins v Buffalo Bills

at Ralph Wilson Stadium on December 22, 2013 in Orchard Park, New York. Buffalo won 16-0.

After being ejected yesterday for throwing a punch, Bills wide receiver Robert Woods said he understood he did something wrong.

But he didn’t sound particularly contrite.

“Of course you shouldn’t throw a punch in a football game, but if you’re playing outside the rules, sometimes you got to be a man sometimes,” Woods said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “But I learned my lesson and just can’t do it again.”

Woods took a swing at the helmeted head of Dolphins safety Reshad Jones after they locked up on a running play.

“The play was over. It was just of those things where it was just extra, how he felt it was necessary to push me after the play and throw me over the pile,” Woods said. “They were clapping once I was walking off the field, but we still won at the end of the game.”

Of course, the “be a man” machismo is dumb enough on its face. The really stupid part is that a man who makes his living with his hands would risk their well-being trying to punch a hard thing which is designed to protect a skull from blows.

Woods is young enough and the Bills have lost enough that it doesn’t matter in the big picture. But one of these days, they might need him on the field helping, whether his manhood feels insulted or not.
