Cowboys will sign Jon Kitna

Jon Kitna Getty Images

With Tony Romo’s status uncertain for Sunday because of a back injury, the Cowboys needed a third quarterback to go with Kyle Orton on the roster.

There were reports about visits from David Carr, John Skelton and Tyler Thigpen, but the team has decided to go in a different direction. Per multiple reports, the team will sign Jon Kitna.

Kitna, who turned 41 in September, last played in the NFL with the Cowboys in 2011. He started nine games for them in 2010 when Romo broke his collarbone, so he’s familiar with Jason Garrett and at least some of the offense from his previous stint with the team. How much that familiarity would help if Kitna were actually pressed into action after almost two full years as a retiree is a question the Cowboys would surely prefer remain unanswered.

Kitna has been teaching and coaching in high school since retiring. Should the Cowboys win this weekend and advance to the playoffs, he may not be available when school reopens after the winter break.

Might as well get Tebow while you are at it. He already replaced Orton once and took a team to the playoffs and a victory over the Steelers.

Wow cowboys lol . Drew Bledsoe is available js lmao

  5. howiefeltersnatch says: Dec 24, 2013 8:27 PM

I remember when Kitna said the only way he’d keep playing is if he had a legitimate shot at winning the Super Bowl and then he signed with the Lions :/

  6. nfl4days says: Dec 24, 2013 8:28 PM

I guess roger staubach and troy aikman were busy.

  7. don2074978 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:28 PM

In the highly unlikely event the Cowgirls season extends into the next schools semester I’m sure Kitna can afford to pay for a substitute to take his place in school

  8. hardythekraken says: Dec 24, 2013 8:29 PM

    Vinny Testaverde is available too!

  9. hyprcaffeinated says: Dec 24, 2013 8:29 PM

Don’t need Tebow and his deviant beliefs back in the NFL.

  10. jjb0811 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:29 PM

Guess he’ll have to wait another 5 years for his hall candidacy!

  11. logicalvoiceseys says: Dec 24, 2013 8:29 PM

The Cowboys should just trade Romo to a quarterback desperate team that has cap space and draft picks. How about the Jaguars? Yes Romo will be 34, but 4 years of Romo could give the Jaguars a few years of winning at least.

    Romo, cowboys 1st (pick 18) for Jaguars 1st (pick 5), Jaguars 3rd (pick 100?)

Jaguars can compete now, and Cowboys can rebuild around their young playmakers with a top 5 quarterback.

  12. dannymac17 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:31 PM

hahahahaha i was joking last night with my cowboys buddy they shoulda call kitna up and see what hes up to.

I was drunk as hell. Then i see this.

    Gotta be kidding me.

  13. jimmysee says: Dec 24, 2013 8:31 PM

It is pretty amazing that through this entire NFL season, with all the QBs coming and going and all the injuries, that Vince Young has not gotten a call.

  14. thekiddone says: Dec 24, 2013 8:32 PM

Was this reported on the Onion news network? No way this is true.

  15. pats777 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:33 PM

Merry Christmas Kitna. Sweet gig. He’ll make more money this weekend holding a clipboard than he’s made all year teaching and coaching. Then again there is risk he could get killed by the Eagles D-line if he actually sees any snaps.

  16. proudliberal85392 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:33 PM

They can probably get him cheap, because he won’t want to jeopardize his monthly Social Security payments.

  17. bennyb82 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:36 PM

It would be an incredible story if Kitna replaced Orton and led the Cowboys to the playoffs.

  18. bennyb82 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:38 PM

How can all these old QBs be better than Vince Young?

  19. meatcarroll says: Dec 24, 2013 8:39 PM

WHAT! Wow! With his résumé, Kitna could have chose a cushy job as a HS coach in Texas, complete with fancy stadium, but he did the noble thing and stayed at his own alma mater in a gang and poverty afflicted area in order to help kids and change lives. NEVER expected him to lace up the cleats again!

  20. bennyb82 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:40 PM

Call McNabb! That would be must-see TV!

  21. MichaelEdits says: Dec 24, 2013 8:40 PM

    I’d sign Aikman.

  22. jh500 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:41 PM

  23. sdsmooth says: Dec 24, 2013 8:41 PM

Kyle Orton. Darn it. There’s a guy I totally forgot about. I’ll have to try and sign him next year.

    Rick Spielman.

  24. vicnocal says: Dec 24, 2013 8:42 PM

Still a younger QB than Brandon Weeden.

  25. flavordave says: Dec 24, 2013 8:42 PM

Kitna? Lol great signing by the worst GM in football. Eagles roll em up like a taquito.

  26. melsh13 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:42 PM

But Jerry Jones is a competent GM. Let’s never question that.

  28. jagtiger says: Dec 24, 2013 8:43 PM

Tebow is done! Let’s not mention his name again. It’s been nice not hearing from the Tebowites!

  29. mackcarrington says: Dec 24, 2013 8:43 PM

Well, they’ve finally done it. They hired a high school coach to play quarterback for the Cowboys.

  30. florida76 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:46 PM

Tebow did help to upset the Steelers that year in overtime, but the Broncos went down in flames the following week. That was an injury riddled Steelers club, not nearly the quality of the 2010 AFC Champs.

  31. Gordon says: Dec 24, 2013 8:49 PM

    Why not sign Roger Staubach?

  32. powerandair says: Dec 24, 2013 8:50 PM

  33. lrical says: Dec 24, 2013 8:51 PM

  60. keltictim says: Dec 24, 2013 9:48 PM

Did not see that coming. But I get it. Let’s face it if Orton goes down that’s the season anyway, so why not have a strong mentor behind Orton to try to boost the kids confidence instead of someone begging for one more shot at glory. Good call GM jones

    —————————————————-

They probably do, talent wise anyways. Money management and everything that comes with that, most likely not. NFL is a fraternity, a who you know league, most of the gms don’t last five years, others shouldn’t last five years but do, and then there’s the few that are actually good at what they do. Point is you don’t necessarily get in by being good at the position. Same with coaching, look at Kyle.

Mr. Jones has three rings as a General Manager and had built one Dynasty. A first ballot Hall of Famer. Once again, he makes a masterful decision. Kitna knows the offense and can still play at the highest level. If needed he can come in and lead this team to yet another Superbowl victory. America’s Team.

  85. 64post says: Dec 24, 2013 11:44 PM

  86. jayquintana says: Dec 24, 2013 11:53 PM

My first thought was, this is ridiculous. But, you know, it kinda makes sense.

Obviously, he’s the last resort, but why not go with the guy who knows the offense? Would the other available QBs be able to pick it up in less than a week?

  94. flatsorter says: Dec 25, 2013 1:54 AM

The Cowboys need to win to get into the playoffs. When Tebow needed to win to get into the playoffs, he lost 3 straight, including 6-3 in the season finale against a bad Chiefs team. However, it’s not too late to erect a bunch of “WE WANT TEBOW” billboards all over Dallas, that should get him the job.

  95. txnative61 says: Dec 25, 2013 2:50 AM

Yeah RIGHT! Like there is a High School in America that wouldn’t give him a leave of absence to play in the NFL playoffs. Probably give him a raise.

  107. larams29 says: Dec 25, 2013 10:00 AM

I would’ve tried to get Kurt Warner. Kitna’s not a bad choice since he’s familiar with the system they use in Dallas. Even though Garrett and Romo don’t use it half the time. If Romo’s out, all i can say is hand it off to Murray. He’s wearing #29. Eric Dickerson is my all time favorite running back. He wore #29. There’s magic in that number.

  108. dodohead418 says: Dec 25, 2013 11:30 AM

It sounds like they didn’t even call Tim Tebow, but even with his passing difficulties he still is a better choice than Jon Kitna!

He was a nobody that got his shot after Dennis Erickson was giving is nephew a courtesy look at Central Washington University.

Erickson was impressed with Kitna. He was signed as a free agent, made it to the practice squad. Went to NFL Europe and parlayed that into a 15+ year career as a pro.

We all should be so lucky!

  114. emailrotten says: Dec 27, 2013 7:23 PM

Everyone thinks it’s funny being a bully.

In my eye, Kitna just became a hero. A 41 year old willing to get beat up by mostly 25 year old guys 100 pounds heavier. And on top of that, he’s not taking a dime for his trouble, but donating every penny.

Who loves a loud mouth bully? Karma.
