Orakpo may miss the last game of his contract

As Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo closes in on the final game of his 2009 rookie contract, Orakpo already may have played the final game of his 2009 rookie contract.

He could miss Sunday’s regular-season finale due to a groin injury suffered in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys.

“[I’m] limited,” Orakpo told Tarik El-Bashir of CSNWashington.com.  “We’ll see as the week progresses.  I’m pretty banged up.  It’s just one of those type strain injuries that you have to deal with.”

The Redskins possibly will have to deal with Orakpo wisely choosing to protect himself as he approaches the open market.

“We’ll see; I’m not going to be stupid,” Orakpo said. “If I feel good, I’m going to try and give it a go. . . .  You just got to be smart, man, you don’t want to be stupid, especially with the season not going as well for us so far.”

The 13th pick of the 2009 draft, Orakpo has started every game this year after being limited to two games in 2012 with a pectoral injury.  He has 10 sacks, one short of his career high of 11, which came in his rookie year.

Sounds good to me I want Orakpo healthy when he signs that fat contract in Oakland this March.

I would LOVE to see this guy in a saints unifrom next year. Give the defense and team some fire and TOUGHNESS.

This organization is soooooo screwed, no #1 draft pick and no money to keep their own FA’s or sign anyone elses. And will owe a coach 7 big ones after they fire him. Nice job Snyder.

I don’t get it, either. If he doesn’t get tagged he will get some love from a few GMs next spring.

He’s never lived up to expectations. Gets injured way too much, and does not cause turnovers. I believe Kerrigan had more turnovers his rookie season then Orakpo has had his entire career. He’s a luxury that this team can not afford, let’s someone else over pay for his services.

  12. hawaiifunfnull says: Dec 24, 2013 7:32 PM

A good to not quite very good player, but one who has ultimately under-performed relative to his draft position.

  13. thehairychestsportsblog says: Dec 24, 2013 7:38 PM

Paying 7 mil for a coach to walk is chump change here in DC

  14. mattw70 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:10 PM

As far as pass rushers go,he’s middle of the pack.

The Skins also have plenty of cap room to sign him, which was falsely stated above.

  15. boyshole25 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:32 PM

No money? The last two years yeah but not this year. If you are going to rip the skins get your facts right you idiot

  16. boyshole25 says: Dec 24, 2013 8:32 PM

But yeah orakpo won’t be back he’s jut not an impact player. Kerrigan though, kids a stud

  17. theworkhorsebackdotcom says: Dec 24, 2013 8:46 PM

Jerry Jones would be smart to go after this guy. It would be a huge upgrade for that team

  18. bewaredware says: Dec 24, 2013 8:54 PM

Please tell me how many ten sack seasons this guy has. And how many game changing plays he has made.

Oh and Demarcus Ware is an all pro playing with nobodies. Orakpo had a better player playing across from him, and still can’t sack an NFC east qb.

  19. dlr4skins says: Dec 24, 2013 9:05 PM

Kerrigan is better and more durable.

Uh dude, Orakpo is a very good player but Ware has three times as many sacks and five times as many forced fumbles. May I suggest that you refrain from posting until you actually know something about football.

Gotta love the pft comments section when it comes to free agents. All these people whose teams run a 4-3 want to sign a 3-4 OLB who went to Texas and never played 4-3 DE. Then when you pay him 10mil a year to play a different position (which no team would ever do), you’ll all be complaining that he sucks.

Here’s the deal – he’ll probably get tagged, but that really is an overpay (considering the franchise tag last year for the position was a hair under 11mil & it will likely go up next year). If he does hit free agency than some dumb team will wind up paying him like he’s Von Miller, which he isn’t. That’s just the nature of free agency.

It would be nice to have him on the Eagles opposite Barwin next season, but not for 10mil/year or more.

  22. skinsfantom says: Dec 24, 2013 9:56 PM

jjg 850 whatever do you watch football. d ware is a stud and has been for a long time and there is no bigger skins fan than i. be real, brian o wishes he is as good as d. ware someday

  23. voidhelix says: Dec 24, 2013 10:29 PM

Tyron Smith handed him his a.ss repeatedly, then took him out. Comparing Orakpo to one of the best pure pass rushers in the history of the NFL makes u a moron.

Bro, news for you. Redskins will have more $$$ than any team in the NFL this off-season. Cap hit is done.
They just will not pay Orakpo. He will get a trans. tag. Any team that signs him has to give a 3rd rd pick

  25. skinsfan91 says: Dec 24, 2013 10:50 PM

He’s under performed slightly. But he’s been coming on strong lately. We’ll resign. Sorry fans of other teams.

  26. ramfanaz says: Dec 24, 2013 10:53 PM

More good news for the Rams if he doesn’t play!

He can’t stay healthy, but he’s a good pass rusher. I would take dware at his age over orakpo any day buddy. Would like to see him in silver and black but sio Moore is going to be a stud and I’d like to sign a MLB first .

Would you give it your best for Dan Snyder and the current Redskins? This guy will end up on a contender with good coaching and be a difference maker.

Orakpo was never the same after he changed positions coming off his rookie yr. WAS defense was formidable when they signed Haynesworth because he did what they paid him to do…wreck havoc up the middle & create 1-on-1’s for the DE’s. Orapko was DROY & Carter had career numbers in sacks the 1st yr playing with Haynesworth. But no…Mike Shanny in his infinite wisdom wanted 2 change a defense that was working and go to a blitzing 3-4, and they’ve sucked since. Good luck Orakpo hopefully he goes to a team that knows how to use player’s talents.

Great 4-3 player, not so much with a 3-4.
