Chiefs coach Andy Reid said early this week that he was considering resting his starters for the season finale with the Chargers because the Chiefs were locked into the fifth seed no matter what happens on the field in Week 17.
Reid has come to a decision and it is one that should lead to a fair amount of playing time for running back Knile Davis, quarterback Chase Daniel and other reserves on the Chiefs roster. Reid sounds like he’s planning to treat this like a glorified preseason game with starters playing sparingly, if at all, before giving way to the lower rungs of the depth chart.
“We’ll mix and match. I’m going to work some guys in,” Reid said, via the Kansas City Star. “Most of them have already worked in. … I talked to the team, and I will have it figured out by the end of the week exactly how I’m going to work it.”
Depending on what happens with Miami and Baltimore, Reid’s decision could make for a sleepy finale. If either the Dolphins or Ravens win, the Chargers will be out of the playoff hunt and the only ramifications of the result will have to do with draft position and the lifetime record of the two head coaches.
