Chiefs will “mix and match” starters and reserves this week

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said early this week that he was considering resting his starters for the season finale with the Chargers because the Chiefs were locked into the fifth seed no matter what happens on the field in Week 17.

Reid has come to a decision and it is one that should lead to a fair amount of playing time for running back Knile Davis, quarterback Chase Daniel and other reserves on the Chiefs roster. Reid sounds like he’s planning to treat this like a glorified preseason game with starters playing sparingly, if at all, before giving way to the lower rungs of the depth chart.

“We’ll mix and match. I’m going to work some guys in,” Reid said, via the Kansas City Star. “Most of them have already worked in. … I talked to the team, and I will have it figured out by the end of the week exactly how I’m going to work it.”

Depending on what happens with Miami and Baltimore, Reid’s decision could make for a sleepy finale. If either the Dolphins or Ravens win, the Chargers will be out of the playoff hunt and the only ramifications of the result will have to do with draft position and the lifetime record of the two head coaches.

  1. I think having something to play for affects the fans a lot more than the players. Athletes always want to win. The majority of them are competitive by nature or they wouldn’t have achieved to the highest level like they have. This should be a pretty good football game by virtue of it being two pretty good teams, regardless of the stakes.

  2. Talk about a lump of coal in our stocking as Steeler fans LOL

This will ultimately come back and bite the Chiefs in the hind end. They aren’t exactly going into the postseason with momentum. While yes, they CAN beat the Colts, the fact they lost by over 20 points AT HOME last week to them should have been motivation enough to play this game true.

And this is ultimately the problem with the NFL when teams get locked in. You can’t prevent them from resting everyone and affecting the playoff races.

Though, it WOULD be very Chargers-like for them to lose to Chase Daniel 🙂

  3. Nothing to gain to by playing the starters..Reid would be foolish to risk losing even 1 starter to injury…I could care less how it affects the other teams trying to get in…Maybe they should have won more games and not depended on the Chiefs to help them.

  4. History shows this is a bad decision. We all know about the 2009 Indy implosion after their perfect season by resting Manning for the playoffs. And many are familiar that Green Bay did the same with Rodgers in 2011 and lost their first playoff game to the Giants. But many people do not remember that in 1993 the NFL experimented with a two week playoff bye to boost revenue, which it did, but the players, coaches, gm’s and owners determined the length of the wait was too detrimental to the play of the individuals that they trashed the idea. Now, remind me again what Einstein said about insanity. I expected better of Reid but this is why he doesn’t coach the Eagles anymore.

  5. total bs. teams are relying on this terrible franchise as a way to get in the playoffs. this is collusion and should be dealt with by the iron fist of god-ell. ruins the integrity of the game! classless move by a classless fanbase and organization who has been irrelevant for about 4 decades! play the starters. I hope they lose in 1st round of playoffs!

I wouldn’t call going to the Super Bowl an implosion.

  8. Oh boo hoo, Steelers fans are upset. Maybe “God’s team” should win enough games on their own to make the post season. Looks like the Dolphins are in the driver’s seat for the sixth seed on Sunday.

  9. Chefs are gonna get smoked in the playoffs either way, and in their hearts, I’m sure their fans know it. Alex Smith just isn’t a QB who can ever win much in today’s post-season, when at some point you will inevitably need your quarterback to push the ball down the field and make a play.

  10. Yep, perhaps the Steelers should have not wasted the first half of the season and got down to business and pulled their own weight instead of relying on others to open the door for them to the playoffs.

  11. Will the NFL mix and match ticket prices since the fans won’t be getting the real deal on the field?

Chargers fans wouldn’t go to the games even if the tickets were $10. Terrible fan base.

This will be Andy’s best season with the Chiefs.

    Thank you Zeus

  14. I imagine it will still be a very spirited game. The Chief’s scrubs are chomping at the bit for more playing time, the Chargers are fighting for their playoff lives. IMO it will be a hard fought close game (with Bolts winning).

  15. Thanks to Andy Reid’s loose lips, theCompetition Committee will know need to review whether teams are required try win when they are locked into a playoff seeding week 17.

Maybe Clownissioner Goodell should threaten to take away draft picks if it is obvious the Chiefs aren’t playing to win!

HEY CHIEFS: The classy NFL franchises try to win EVERY game.

  16. Ha Steeler fans , the way your team played this year it appeared they were mailing it in most weeks, too funny, now the Chiefs want to mail it in how does it feel?

  17. I find it funny that Steeler fans are so mad. Like the Steelers had a chance of winning and having Baltimore, Miami, and SD losing. Maybe they should of won more and not choked out so many games. Andy is doing the right thing. No sense in getting a starter hurt before starting the playoff games, especially when you already have the seed locked up.

Plus if the Steelers were resting their players, their fans would be all over saying how smart Tomlin was. Must be so frustrating to know that your team is slowly going down the drain due to everyone getting older.

It’s not that Smith can’t push the ball down the field. Its the fact that KC doesn’t have any real threat outside of Charles. Bowe sucks. Avery is nothing more than a 3rd WR. McCluster is nothing more than a 3rd down back. Davis fumbles too much. Fasano is always hurt. McGrath has a sweet beard but he is a poor mans TE. Get Smith something he has never really had, good core of WR, and then see what he and Andy can do.

  19. The Steelers have to win their own game and the Ravens, Dolphins and Chargers all have to lose to get the Steelers into the playoffs.

Any of you Black and Gold fans who seriously think you have any hope of these dominoes falling correctly may want to buy a lottery ticket because you might have better odds with that.
