Phillips says Yates won’t start for Houston on Sunday

Yates

The man who wears No. 13 for the Texans won’t be getting a chance to help the team end a 13-game losing streak.

After suggesting on Monday that T.J. Yates could get the nod at quarterback in the regular-season finale against the Titans, interim coach Wade Phillips said Tuesday that Yates won’t.

“Both of the other guys [Case Keenum and Matt Schaub] have played a whole lot, and going into the last game, they give us the best opportunity,” Phillips said, via John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. “It just would be hard for T.J. to come in after not playing any the whole year.”

Schaub started the team’s latest loss because Keenum has a torn ligament in his thumb. Phillips said he’ll have a better idea on Thursday as to whether Keenum can play.

While Schaub and Keenum have indeed played “a whole lot,” they haven’t played well. Why not go with the guy who led the franchise to its first playoff win?

Regardless of who gets the nod, it’s safe to say the Texans won’t get another playoff win with any of their three current options at quarterback.
