Lions add rugby player Carlin Isles to practice squad

Now here’s a transaction that catches the eye.

The Lions have signed USA Rugby player Carlin Isles to their practice squad, Tim Twentyman of reported on Thursday.

According to his USA Rugby bio, the 24-year-old Isles was a world-class sprinter and a former returner / running back at Ashland University. He had tried out for the Lions earlier in the week.

By adding Isles to the practice squad now, the Lions could conceivably sign him to the offseason roster once the 2013 regular season ends.

Isles replaces tight end Matt Veldman, promoted to the roster on Thursday, on the practice squad, Twentyman reported.

The Lions’ ranks at tight end have dwindled in recent days, with Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) and Dorin Dickerson (concussion) landing on injured reserve.

Veldman, 25, is a second-year pro from North Dakota State.

He probably knows the rules as well as the rest of the team, so it’s a perfect fit.

Watched this guy play at two different 7s tournies. Fastest guy I’ve ever seen in the flesh. If he can play ball, he’ll do well.

His speed is ridiculous. I’ve watched him play for USA and trying to catch him seemed like a lost cause. Not sure how much football Carlin has played but I’m hoping the best for him. Then again I thought Noel Devine was going to be a beast in the NFL but now he’s in Canada.

He is one hell of an athelete. I hope he makes it to pre season and gets a chance to get in the open field.

I’m guessing he won’t see action since he’s on the practice squad, but I wish they would play him Sunday. It would give us disgruntled Lions fans a reason to watch the game.

Maybe they can get Siegfried and Roy as well .

Isles is a ridiculous Rugby 7’s player. In the open field, there isn’t a guy on the planet who can bring him down. (OK, hyperbole in effect)

If the Lions find a way to get him in open space, he’s dangerous. But, it’s the Lions…… I’m just hoping he doesn’t get hurt. I want him on the USA team for the next Rugby World Cup.

Carlin can play. He was a holy hell of a prep football player in Stark County, OH at a huge Division I school in Massillon. Furthermore, he was a really humble, great kid in the classroom and in society. He won’t display any “Detroit Lions” behaviors.

I am obviously biased, given that I was a teacher and coach at his school. Here’s to believing he makes the squad next year.

    Can he coach???

Unbelievable all these lions fans getting excited for a rugby player. Just shows how smart they really are.

This guy will never see the field. There are beasts in college that have played football since age 5 that can’t make the field but this 160 lb dude that never played a down will? Uh huh.

Imagine if Roger Goodell were the commissioner of USA Rugby?

He ran a 4.22 40 during the tryout and was apparently upset he didn’t run in the 4.1’s. The guy is fast. Maybe the next Trindon Holliday?
