Freeman has interest in staying with the Vikings

Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman apparently can get used to getting more than $166,000 per week to not play.

As he completes a partial season in Minnesota that featured only one game appearance, the impending free agent and former first-round pick of the Buccaneers says he’s interested in sticking around.

“I definitely have interest in coming back, for sure,” Freeman said Friday, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “It’s a great organization, a great team.”

And it’s a great mystery why Freeman hasn’t returned to the field since a late October Monday night effort at New York, completing only 20 of 53 passes for a mere 190 yards.  Coach Leslie Frazier wouldn’t get into the details, and neither would Freeman.

“It’s a conversation between me and the coaches,” Freeman said.

The Vikings have the exclusive ability to converse with Freeman’s agents about a potential return until March 8, at which time the three-day legal tampering period opens in advance of the March 11 launch of free agency.  Whether the Vikings have interest depends largely on the identity of the coach and General Manager.  Many believe Frazier won’t be back; some believe G.M. Rick Spielman may not be.

It would nevertheless be a major surprise to see Freeman wearing next year the uniform that was game-worn only once in 2013.

Meanwhile in our great nation’s capital, the Redskins have TWO terrific QBs! RG3 will be entering his third season as a pro and is by far the best QB in the NFL. Cousins will net us at least one high draft pick. Maybe if the Vikings traded for Cousins, they could finally be winners. #HTTR

    Lol. Whatever.

thats if frazier is gone. Frazier didn’t want Freeman.

  4. harrisonhits2 says: Dec 28, 2013 1:32 PM

Of course he wants to keep collecting an NFL paycheck. Especially one the size he’s been getting while not even being active.

Freeman should be out of the NFL and headed for Canada or the arena league next year

Doesn’t he mean return to the Vikings after winning a SB with Dallas or whoever else might need a new QB in the final game?

Mystery solved. He simply is not very good.

I’m a lot like Josh…….. I have interest in having a high paying job too. But I am not worth it.

  8. chemicaltoilet says: Dec 28, 2013 1:38 PM

I’d like to get paid for doing nothing too.

Big bucks start one game… and ride the pine.

The only thing funnier then Vikings fans getting all excited over this move. Was when they won the Super Bowl on the first night of the draft with 3 1st round picks.

I’m pretty sure no one is going to accuse the Vikings of tampering even if they did….

As far as sports memorabilia goes, it doesn’t get much rarer than a game-worn Josh Freeman Minnesota Vikings jersey.

If he stays it’s because of Speilman…. Yuck

The question and what seemingly has been answered by their action: is the interest mutual? No…..

The dude lied to get out of Tampa, played on the emotions of fans, caused an outrage that helped to tank their season.

I’m not sure any professional organization should trust an employee like that.

I have interest in staying with any NFL team that wants me, but unfortunately there aren’t any of those.

  16. broncostevenp says: Dec 28, 2013 2:27 PM

This guy can play QB. I’m not sure why the Vikings won’t play him the last game. It’s not as if Cassell is the future.

  17. Ferdinand says: Dec 28, 2013 2:37 PM

It is the best thing he can do in the situation. Unfortunately, the situation is that there will be a lot of changes coming to the team at all levels. And while they may not drop him at the very first opportunity, he won’t be on the team when the next regular season starts.

    Who else would have him.

  19. filthymcnasty1 says: Dec 28, 2013 3:05 PM

This is just one more hapless and tasteless move for the last place Vikings.

  20. ravenswhat says: Dec 28, 2013 3:06 PM

What a gig. 166k per week and he KNOWS he’s not playing. Best gig ever.

  21. orivar says: Dec 28, 2013 3:08 PM

$166,000 to sit, not get injured, and make more money on the side doing photoshoots and sponsored events. Of course he’d want to stay. Living the life Freeman, living the life!

  22. spliff219 says: Dec 28, 2013 3:22 PM

Not real big on freeman but if your looking for a guy to come in and compete with a youngster, hes your guy. he has had success in the league

  23. raideralex99 says: Dec 28, 2013 3:31 PM

Paying players like Jonathan Martin … Josh Freeman … JaMarcus Russell not to play is a joke.

  24. sdsmooth says: Dec 28, 2013 3:35 PM

Of course he has interest in staying with the Vikings. Doesn’t everyone want to work for a clueless boss who has no interest in your results? Not to mention get paid millions to do it?

  25. conormacleod says: Dec 28, 2013 3:48 PM

He will be in whatever uniform pays him the most. You know, like every other player.

  26. whatjusthapped says: Dec 28, 2013 4:30 PM

I can understand his logic. The Vikings don’t have a NFL QB on their roster and no matter who they whiff on in the draft, they will want to start a more experienced Qb to begin the season.

Secondly, the Vikings haven’t had a real Qb in years so it is unlikely they could recognize what one even looks like so anything in the ballpark will be good enough for the Vikings.

And lastly, the Vikings have a track record for overpaying qB’s. Josh makes only 3 million but BrINT Favre made over 16 mil and T Jack Off, whatever salary they paid him was automatically too much and the same could be said of McNabb.

  27. vikescry1 says: Dec 28, 2013 4:33 PM

he wants to back up ponder, he is the best qb in the division greg jennings says so! lol

  28. bunjy96 says: Dec 28, 2013 4:46 PM

There must be something wrong with Freeman.

He was at the root of the damage done to their coach.

  29. spyder9669 says: Dec 28, 2013 5:26 PM

Am I the only Vikings fan that really just wants them to draft Manziel? At least you know exactly what your getting…a playmaker who is gonna do whatever it takes to win. To me all other options have huge risk involved and we don’t have time for that!

  30. dragonfly99 says: Dec 28, 2013 6:02 PM

He should stay with the Vikings. Who wouldn’t want to get paid a high salary to do absolutely nothing. Hey Josh make sure to ask for a big raise from $ 2 million to $ 3 million a year. Once he dumps Frazier, Spielman will probably pay it.

  31. bobnelsonjr says: Dec 28, 2013 7:18 PM

As the best QB on the viking roster, the team better find a way to be ready to pony up some money to keep him.

He has had a more bad games than good. He did almost lead the Buccs to a playoff game if I recall right, but then again. Ponder had lead the Vikings to the playoffs too.

  33. petedutcherjr says: Dec 28, 2013 7:33 PM

Mark my words. Give Josh time to learn an offense and a good oline and he will do very well.

How the Vikings expected him to save the season in one game is beyond me.

  34. timaug says: Dec 28, 2013 11:35 PM

If frazier stays, freeman minds well.
    They will be losers again.
