Calvin Johnson out, won’t lead league in receiving yards

Calvin Johnson AP

For the first time since 2010, Lions receiver Calvin Johnson will not lead the league in receiving yards this season.

Johnson, who led the league in receiving yards in 2011 and 2012 and is second this season, is inactive for today’s game. Johnson’s quest to join Don Hutson and Jerry Rice as the only players in NFL history to lead the league three straight years has come to an end.

Browns receiver Josh Gordon will almost certainly end up as the leader in receiving yards for the 2013 season. Gordon currently leads the league with 1,564 yards. Johnson, at 1,492 yards, would have been the a the only player with a good shot at catching Gordon. Steelers receiver Antonio Brown (1,412 yards) and Bengals receiver A.J. Green (1,365 yards) would both need huge games (and need Gordon to do next to nothing today) to pass Gordon’s total.

Johnson has been dealing with a knee injury all season, and with the Lions mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, the team has decided to shut Johnson down.

    What an accomplishment.

Josh Gordon is almost better than Cordarelle Patterson.

Antonio Brown is hands down the best receiver in the NFL. He is also the most underrated.

Calvin Johnson is a beast. The kind of guy, 10 years from now, you will look back and be glad you were able to see him play.

Josh Gordon has missed two games this year too. And he’s had less talent at QB then Calvin Johnson. Josh Gordon is the best WR in the NFL.

This guy is a player for the Ages.

Detroit may not have won anything in a long time but to witness Sanders and Johnson on a weekly basis in a lifetime is truly special.

I got to see Lawrence Taylor and Mariano Rivera from day 1 and it’s just really special as it’s playing out…

And Gordon did it with a 2 game suspension. Kudos to that kid.

It’s a shame so many great receivers are currently on bad teams. Imagine if Johnson was on the teams Jerry Rice was on.

I’m glad he’s sitting and Schwartz isn’t pushing the issue in some futile attempt to save his job…CJ’s been gimping around nearly all season

Come on with the Gordon is better stuff. CJ has also missed two games and has been extremely limited (less than 50 percent of his normal snaps) in at least 4 other games. He also has been playing through a PCL the entire year that will require surgery this offseason. Kudos to what he has been able to accomplish under these circumstances.

Gordon isn’t the best WR. He’s the best WR on a bad team that forces him the ball to try to stay in games. If they had a reggie bush/joquie bell combo I doubt he would have that many yards. Bright future but Calvins still King and a healthy Julio will be better

Johnson and AP should call each other and discuss what it’s like to be so good for awful franchises. Their stats don’t mean as much when you put them up for bad teams. Hopefully, both players will get a chance to play for good franchises before they are washed up.

Gordon could have negative yardage today. :)
