Mike Shanahan says he’s meeting Dan Snyder in the morning

Reports out of Washington are that Mike Shanahan will be fired by the Redskins now that the season’s over and official news about the team’s decision looks like it will be coming on Monday.

After the Redskins fell to 3-13 in a 20-6 loss to the Giants, Shanahan told reporters that he would meet with owner Dan Snyder on Monday morning to talk about his job. If we had to guess, it won’t need to be a particularly long meeting.

Should the Redskins do the expected, they likely already have wheels in motion regarding potential replacements and the next few days will bring us a look at the leading candidates for the job in Washington.

Shanahan is 24-40 through four years with the Redskins. The team made the playoffs once during that span, but lost quarterback Robert Griffin III to a knee injury during the game. That was one of the first dominos that led to a dismal 2013 season and an increasing feeling that Shanahan has reached the end of the line with the Redskins.

Ridiculously over rated coach. Should be his last HC job in NFL

  11. cardmagnet says: Dec 29, 2013 5:11 PM

The headline may as well read “Shanahan to receive pink slip in the morning”. It was so painfully obvious he was piling on to force Snyder’s hand to can him, even though his poor coaching probably already sealed his fate.

  12. donttrip22 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:11 PM

Dont blame him for wanting out after putting all there eggs in the RGIII basket and coming out totally empty anybody would do the same its the only LOGIC thing to do

  13. yevrag3535 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:13 PM

Fire that guy already, need to get going somewhere. No tomorrow if he stays, same old story.

That gives Snyder time to fire him tonight.

  17. dcsportsrcursed says: Dec 29, 2013 5:16 PM

Maybe Elway will hire him. You could always use a good waterboy.

  18. washfootball says: Dec 29, 2013 5:17 PM

It is about time. Total failure based on how much he was paid.

  21. blackqbwhiterb says: Dec 29, 2013 5:24 PM

Egos & relationships…… Success or failure…. Hopefully the next guy has the Gravitas to get the team’s attention and get them moving in the right direction.

Personal note to London Fletcher-for all the great accomplishments, I will always remember watching you just stand there today when a lane opened up in front of you on the Giants FG to put them up 20-6…. You could have blocked that kick & you just stood there. You were the one I thought would always give 110%. I Guess enough is enough, wth

  22. scoreatwill says: Dec 29, 2013 5:24 PM

This guy is over rated and has really done nothing since John Elway retired despite having total control over personnel decisions. Washington has decent personnel to build around must get better coaching particularly an offensive coordinator who RGIII can trust. Never trust a Shanahan.

  23. dhardy8207 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:24 PM

Better get on Career Builder and get that resume’ together.

NOTE: Might not be a wise idea to include RG3 as a reference…

  24. ziplock10 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:26 PM

This team needs a quality GM. Not another repeat of a coach who thinks he can do it all. And hide family/friends.

Say what you want! This coaching team was paid 14 million a season.

No way was their worth displayed at anytime. They had RGIII out there injured playing. Yeah he’s arrogant, but the adults should have taken control. Not a 23 year old.

    Like I said… Not worth the $$$!!

  25. jerrahsucks says: Dec 29, 2013 5:26 PM

To bad he was stuck with that idiot offensive coordinator.

  26. therealzeitgeist says: Dec 29, 2013 5:26 PM

It would be awesome to get fired from my job tomorrow, then handed a $7m dollar severance check.

  27. redskinsroost says: Dec 29, 2013 5:26 PM

Not only should Snyder fire him, he should punch him in the mouth too.

  28. fdugrad says: Dec 29, 2013 5:28 PM

Meeting in the morning eh…I wonder if it’s guns or swords?

  29. drs76109 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:29 PM

Fire little Shanny first. Then let the elder squirm…

As if they don’t have enough cause already.

  30. drs76109 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:30 PM

Hmmm. Wonder if he cleaned out his office before today’s game..

    Quick! Call Schefter to check.

  31. randomcommenter says: Dec 29, 2013 5:31 PM

    Shanahan – Elway = loser

  32. securb2013 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:33 PM

When Mike Shanahan walks in the office Donald Trump will be sitting in Dan Snyder’s chair.

  33. syphermce says: Dec 29, 2013 5:38 PM

As a longtime Redskins fan, I hope Snyder does the right thing and keeps Shanahan around. Mike Shanahan isn’t the problem, RGIII isn’t the issue either. The issue is lack of defense and special teams. You get rid of the DC and ST coaches and go from there. You can the salary cap space that the NFL unjustly screwed the Redskins out of to sure up the O-Line to protect RGIII and add some depth to the secondary.

  34. brianjoates says: Dec 29, 2013 5:46 PM

Doesn’t need career builder, that seven million dollar parting gift will hold him for awhile.

  35. geniusesq says: Dec 29, 2013 5:49 PM

I may be the only person in DC who wants Mike Shanahan to be re-signed. We need stability for once. Un-do the mistakes that were the hiring of this coaching staff, and maybe we can start winning consistently.

    Kyle = mistake.
    Haslett = mistake.
Keith Burns = super hideous mistake.

A complete overhaul will set us back years.

  36. tralfaz1127 says: Dec 29, 2013 5:55 PM

That’s ok next coach can start rebuilding with the #2 pick in the draft next year. Oh…… My bad, 2nd round pick, or did they trade that too.

  37. drs76109 says: Dec 29, 2013 6:01 PM

Not a Shanahan fan. But think I would not fire the guy. I’d force hmmimfirst to make changes to coaching staff. Fire little Shanny. Make give Haslett a chance to go elsewhere. If he refuses, then reassess. But if there is proof that he leaked those stories, then yes, fire for cause.

It’s true that this coaching staff is quite overpriced. And the HC is over his head, and quite possibly has se human relations sill defects that affect how he handles players.

That said, who replaces him? I see no good immediate option. No sure fire, and that seems to be what they go for in DC under this ownership. And this is the dilemma for DC. Briles is not a answer at the pro level. (Mack Brown might be, though..). I don’t see a retread that would work in that environment.

So give a solid assistant a shot. Todd Bowles. Played for DC. Solid pro coaching experience. About the only good option I can envision.

If they axe Allen, though, they ought to ok at the GM of the Montreal Alouettes, since he has experience in the mid-Atlantic and is well regarded.

  38. jeremycrowhurst says: Dec 29, 2013 6:14 PM

I would ask Snyder and Shanahan the same question: back when Snyder offered, and Shanahan accepted, the job, what did you both THINK was gonna happen? Did either of you think this was going to end well?

  39. deshackle says: Dec 29, 2013 6:16 PM

Mike Shanahan threw a hail Mary with Kurt Cousins and it too was picked off. Santana Moss was right, in hindsight, Cousins setup to fail. Hopefully the Skins can find a head coach that’s not a egomaniac.

  40. cheapglazers says: Dec 29, 2013 6:32 PM

Is he announcing he will sell the team?

  41. kst2074 says: Dec 29, 2013 6:41 PM

Cant blame Snyder or Griffin, every part of the team was terrible, its all on Shanny

Yeah….Meeting in the parking lot. “Zorn Style”

And you can take your exercise balls and your son!

  43. jayquintana says: Dec 29, 2013 7:10 PM

Teams that win Super Bowls don’t seem to have any conflict between owner, GM, and coach.

    Steelers, Packers, Patriots, Ravens, etc.

    Gee, I wonder if that’s a coincidence?

  44. hitmeimopen says: Dec 29, 2013 7:27 PM

Most of tonight’s posters are relieved to see Shanny go, understandably…but the coaching carousel is how the Dan rolls…hire ’em, abuse ’em, dump ’em. Until he either sells or dies.

  45. washfootball says: Dec 29, 2013 7:35 PM

Hey Danny don’t fire him but demote shanahan to towel boy at least make him the highest paid towel guy 🙂
