Report: Frazier is out

Frazier AP

On Saturday, a source with knowledge of the situation told PFT that no decision has been made regarding the future of Vikings coach Leslie Frazier.  According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, a decision has been made.

Per Glazer, Frazier is out.

There was no wiggling or waffling in Glazer’s report.  Glazer said the hammer will fall after ownership meets on Monday morning with G.M. Rick Spielman.

We’d previously heard that Spielman has compiled a double-digit list of potential candidates.  Every team even possibly considering a change would have a list of potential replacements at this point.

    Lovie Smith?

Sometimes a broken collarbone takes longer to heal than a broken spirit. good luck in your career, Leslie.

And his opponent today will likely be back as coach of the Lions next year.

    Frazier out: Chuckie in.

  5. mediasloppy says: Dec 29, 2013 12:29 PM

Just don’t bring in some guy like Brad Childress. That guy was one of the worse decisions Wilf has done.

Is Speilman gonna fire himself too!

  7. golforepar says: Dec 29, 2013 12:31 PM

The Vikings will be on here shortly to dispute this move! Oh wait, where did they all go??

  8. f1restarter says: Dec 29, 2013 12:33 PM

The Vikings didn’t even have the class or common decency to wait until the final game was over.

This organization is not worthy of being in the same league, much less the same division, as the Green Bay Packers.

  10. FinFan68 says: Dec 29, 2013 12:35 PM

No brainer. I didn’t see how he was made the HC in the first place. Last year was a surprise and secured his job for this year. Not so lucky this year although the Vikings won a few games where most thought they would lose.

  11. Pittsburgh Steelers says: Dec 29, 2013 12:35 PM

Maybe they’ll rehire him to play QB?

  12. mcdeez22 says: Dec 29, 2013 12:41 PM

Perfect opportunity for the “Down Goes Frazier” headline squandered.

  13. realfootballfan says: Dec 29, 2013 12:47 PM

If they’re serious, they’ll fire Spielman, too.

  14. rubenxx7 says: Dec 29, 2013 12:56 PM

    Dynasty huh…..

    Going nowhere for decades……

  17. medialovesthecowboys says: Dec 29, 2013 1:03 PM

Keep Frazier. GMs and Owners have to start getting firm with fans – let them know that it’s a 3 or 4 year plan, to be patient, and to remind them that it’s about building a foundation. Otherwise they’ll just continue to pander to the displeasure of public opinion. It looks directionless when teams keep firing a coach every three years.

  18. douchebigelow says: Dec 29, 2013 1:05 PM

    Congrats Coach Frazier

  19. stellarperformance says: Dec 29, 2013 1:07 PM

The Vikings were led down the all-in all-now path by Favre and it (predictably) blew up in their faces , and cost Childress his job. The Vikings owe Childress a second chance. In fact, back when he was hired at the same time McCarthy was hired by Green Bay, the Viking fans insisted they got the better man and that McCarthy was a waste of time and money. Let’s help the Viking fans demonstrate their expertise in such matters.

    Bring back Childress!

  22. daysend564 says: Dec 29, 2013 1:09 PM

The Rooney rule needs a clause in it that you can not fire black coaches. It just isn’t fair.

  23. rightofright says: Dec 29, 2013 1:11 PM

    Super….fantastic.

    Now,…..NO coordinators!

Get a real, proven head coach. This team, as pitiful as the season has been, were really only 5 or 6 plays from winning the division!

Do they have places to improve? Obviously they do. But the mighty Boa would dare say good coaches have gotten much further with less….so let’s get a good one!

Frazier never should have been given the job. As DC, he authored a defense that became notorious for giving up huge leads. As HC, that appears to have spread to the entire team. So, probably a very nice guy, but not HC material…..Adios…

  24. lowtalker says: Dec 29, 2013 1:32 PM

GMs should also get fired on Mondays. Who makes all of those dumb draft choices?

  25. tokyosandblaster says: Dec 29, 2013 1:32 PM

  29. anarchopurplism says: Dec 29, 2013 1:44 PM

Leslie Fraizer > Denny Green in terms of class.

Glad he is coaching out the last game of the season. The coaches preach it to the players & management should live the value as well.

  30. davikes says: Dec 29, 2013 1:46 PM

I think Frazier should be fired, but the idea that Jay Glazier has the scoop is ridiculous. He’s just guessing, and has pretty good odds of being right. And if he’s wrong, nobody really cares about what he said anyway.

  31. davikes says: Dec 29, 2013 1:47 PM

No, not Lovie Smith. If Smith were the coach, Ponder would start for another year.

  32. orivar says: Dec 29, 2013 1:48 PM

Very good guy but too nice, gives too many chances to his guys and doesn’t want to step on any toes. Musgrave should of been let go.

  33. gergie1957 says: Dec 29, 2013 1:49 PM

They better lay the hammer down on Spielman also.

  34. gophersnot says: Dec 29, 2013 1:59 PM

  38. toddc612 says: Dec 29, 2013 2:26 PM

Amen! This is the absolute best news of the season for Vikings fans. Frazier coached with stubbornness instead of common sense when it came to personnel decisions this year, and he rightly paid the ultimate price. Now we start the slow process of rebuilding and trying to forget this joke of a season. The fans deserved better than this clown of a head coach and coordinators..

  39. seatownballers says: Dec 29, 2013 2:34 PM

I gotta go take a nasty Frazier and might have to double wipe my spielmen

  40. sc5000 says: Dec 29, 2013 2:40 PM

Not right that spielman assembles a trash roster and frazier gets the ax. Why do the vikings trust spielman to draft another qb when he missed so badly on Ponder.

  41. msmith954 says: Dec 29, 2013 2:40 PM

    I want Chuckie.

  42. kirbylaw says: Dec 29, 2013 2:40 PM

PSL’s get marketed heavy in January. Hopefully the new coach will not be selected by the amount of media juice he has rather than the about of coaching ability he has.

  43. jjbadd385 says: Dec 29, 2013 2:40 PM

Never hire a man named Leslie, @ certainly don’t do it because the Rooney Rule told ya to. The Rooney Rule is getting people chances because of their color, not because they’re qualified. If they are black, they KNOW that they’re getting an interview, so they have time to prepare the best pitch of their lives, make it sound good! Frazier was never HC material

  48. pootytang66 says: Dec 29, 2013 3:03 PM

This is great news for us! Sorry to see Frazier go but that’s what happens when you don’t hire the right coaches around you.

Do the Harbaughs have another brother somewhere around???

  49. deltaoracle says: Dec 29, 2013 3:16 PM

Well, we know that Zygi can’t handle it with too much less class than when he told the press about firing Tice before telling Tice.
And yeah, the established, big-name coaches are going to be fighting one another for a chance to go and coach in a 50,000 seat college stadium for the next two seasons with Cassel or Ponder or a rookie at QB. Look for someone you never heard of to get the job. And don’t look for the Vikings anytime soon.

  50. stevejjones says: Dec 29, 2013 3:18 PM

Stop with the Lovie Smith nonsense. I’ve got to believe this is a race thing. Think football not affirmative action people. The game has passed him by, he cannot make adjustments, he doesn’t know offense. A nerd like Trestman, just because he doesn’t look like his players, is a far superior choice. It’s time to choose people by merit not by the color of their skin – aka: Rooney Rule. A coach needs to be smart.

  51. dragonfly99 says: Dec 29, 2013 3:27 PM

Frazier is out, but somehow Spielman keeps his job. Unbelievable.

  52. leatherface2012 says: Dec 29, 2013 3:29 PM

How can this be?!! According to all the Viking fans that pillage all the Packer articles, The Vikings are the greatest team ever assembled in the history of the NFL and the Packers are the worst ever. And here we are. The vikes are in last place again and the Packers are going for yet another division title despite losing half their team to injuries. Weird

  56. jerrykill4pres says: Dec 29, 2013 3:39 PM

I think this is the wrong move.. Spielman should have gone first!

I could live with Frazier. If Spielman and Williams, and Musgrave got the axe.. But, I wish all of them would. Priefer is the only one i’d love to see stay, he has this as one of the best return games in football. Between punt and kick off returns, and also our kicking game is pretty good as well.

  57. jollyjoker2 says: Dec 29, 2013 3:46 PM

Spielman = drafted ponder. Any coach cannot win with that QB.. Not possible. I don’t think either s/b fired but if one – its spielman.

  58. davidsterlingblog says: Dec 29, 2013 3:48 PM

Until Spielman is gone, it doesn’t matter who they bring in as head coach. That guy is useless as a GM.

  59. benfranklinjrr says: Dec 29, 2013 3:50 PM

All of you morons that are calling for Spielman’s clearly don’t understand much. Those “bad draft picks” have been great. He’s only been the GM since last year! Ponder wasn’t his pick.

  60. clanzomaelan says: Dec 29, 2013 3:55 PM

I would love to have Frazier as my neighbor. Maybe even a college coach. Nice guy.

Coach of the Vikings? No thank you. He was a stop-gap from the get go.

His downfall was his stubborn loyalty to players, schemes and coaches.

Alan Williams will likely never be a DC again, yet he was our DC.

Musgrave was quote literally the most bland, unimaginative, Johnny Milquetoast OC in league history (run, run, QB roll right/left and pass to TE in the flat).

Erin Henderson should have never started over Cole.

Bishop somehow ended up in the doghouse.

Ponder inexplicably started over the clearly superior (yet average at best) Cassell.

Somehow, he didn’t see that Patterson should have been on the field far more often earlier in the season.

This is far from an exhaustive list, and says nothing of the fact that he trotted out one of the worst defenses in the league this year (as a former DC).

I wish him the best in life, but never want to see him near the Vikings again unless he’s an opposing coach.

  61. mediasloppy says: Dec 29, 2013 3:56 PM

I just love talk of how no one will want to be a Vikings coach. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard. What coach would not want to prove himself by turning an organisation around? And if a coach only wants a job, because he thinks it’s an easy cruise to the Super Bowl, he’s not worth having.

  62. purpleman527 says: Dec 29, 2013 4:11 PM

As payback for your comment, I sincerely hope the Vikings keep Spielman. We have a playoff game to look forward to, our third consecutive NFC North Divisional title and in the same frame, the Vikings finished in the basement two out of those three years. And next year isn’t looking too good either.

Actually I believe this report. I know for a fact(yes, inside info here)that he is very good friends with a few of the player’s on the Vikings. I’d say it’s probably an 85% chance this happens…maybe the win today saved him otherwise however…so yeah, 85% chance he’s gone this week…

Hate to burst your bubble but the Vikings had a lot of injuries as well. No Viking fan I know says how they are the greatest team ever so I’m not sure where you get your facts. The only thing you were right about is that the Vikings finished in last place. Nice obvious observation.
