Saints go marching into playoffs with big win over Bucs

Drew Brees, Ben Grubbs, Gerald McCoy AP

The Saints might not get another chance to play inside, but they made heading outside look easy.

The Saints hammered the Buccaneers 42-17 to claim the final available playoff spot in the NFC, a Wild Card berth. That means a trip to either the winner of the NFC East or North, depending on late results.

The Saints were 8-0 in the Superdome this year, but just 3-5 on the road, winning at Tampa Bay, at Atlanta, and in Chicago in October when it was 60 degrees at kickoff.

The Saints used a familiar formula to do it, with quarterback Drew Brees putting on another clinic. Brees finished 24-of-31 for 381 yards and four touchdowns, with 321 of the yards and all the scores coming in the first half. For good measure, Brees added a touchdown run in the second half, before letting Luke McCown finish up.

The loss drops the Buccaneers to 4-12, and it seems like a long time since that three-game win streak that earned coach Greg Schiano what seemed like a bit of a vote of confidence.

He’s now 11-21 in two seasons, and there are reasonable questions about the direction of a team with some solid parts, but no apparent answer at quarterback.

Good for the Saints. I have to give credit to the Arizona Cardinals. Even though they are out of the playoffs they are still playing lights out.

    Schiano’s not good
    Horrible in game coaching
    Should be back to school

Hey bucs, how’d that $16 million cornerback work out for you today?

  6. thundastormz says: Dec 29, 2013 7:58 PM

    One and done.

The Bucs problem is not coaching. it is talent. Rookie QB put up good numbers for a rookie. Look up Manning, Brees, Brady in their first years. And look at what Glennon had. No WRs. Awful O line. 4th string RB.

This falls on Dominik. Poor FA signings. Poor draft picks.

But if Schiano wants to go to PSU, fine. Clean house.

Don’t really care who wins tonight, both these D’s are very suspect…

  9. bigblu73 says: Dec 29, 2013 9:10 PM

Schiano is such an improvement over Raheem Morris!!!! Oh, wait a second I’m wrong. Morris actually was the 1st headcoach in the modern era to have a winning season while starting 10 rookies, while Schiano seems to do less with waaaaaaay more talent!!!

Uhhhm. Whooa cowboy, so is it your theory that because a few elite QB’s struggled their 1st year or two and Glennon also struggled he is somehow inclined to be elite at some point??? Good luck with that!!!! No WR’s??? Really?? You could do alot worse than the tandem of Pro Bowler VJax and Mike Williams! Awful O-Line??? Really?? You mean the O-Line anchored by 2 All Pros Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph?? In case you didn’t know it, every backup RB the Bucs played this season performed like an absolute STUD Mike James, Bobby Rainey, etc…. FA’s well Revis is on his way back to Hawaii, so I’d say that worked out pretty well. Gerald McCoy has turned into a absolute beast. GM Check!!!!LOL So I’d have to say by deductive reasoning that the weakest link would most certainly be C O A C H I N G!!!!!

    Bucs are weak sauce.
Brees wins 1st playoff game on the road next week. After that who knows.

The future is what you make it.

To the bigblu ( the ignorant Giants fan commenting about the Bucs),

    1. Mike Williams did not play for the Bucs after week 6 due to injury (Glennon started week 4), also has never been to a Pro Bowl. 2. Carl Nicks played all of 2 games this year due to MRSA, toe issues 3. Davin Joseph was recovering from a torn patellar tendon from last year and no where near the player he was in past years. 4. Bobby Rainey (the “stud” you mentioned) averaged 2.5, 1.9 and 3.2 yards per carry the last 3 games of the year. Adrian Peterson is jealous of that production, obviously.

    There. Now shut up.

  13. salmen76 says: Dec 30, 2013 8:42 AM

Hoot der it iz! The Saints will hammer the eaglets in Philly and then travel to Seattle and hammer the shehawks and then travel to candlestick and hammer the whiners for the NFC crown. Then they’ll travel to Met life Stadium and hammer Peyton Manning in the SB just like they did in SB 44 in Miami. Geaux Saints!

It’s cute when people try to trash talk but don’t actually know anything about a situation so they pick the completely wrong thing. Revis has been fine, we had the cap room and our pass D by DVOA has improved a great deal over last year. This is a team sport: Revis more than held up his end of the bargain.

The coaching staff on the other hand? If you want to trash-talk Bucs fans talk about Schiano or talk about some of the worst owners in the league: The Glazers. Revis? He’s not even on the list of things Bucs fans worry about.

  15. uglyglazers says: Dec 30, 2013 9:23 AM

This falls on the Glazer kids for micromanaging a professional football team.

  16. labucs says: Dec 30, 2013 9:58 AM

Another 4-12 season. I think we have a good QB who could lead the team but the Coach who is steering the ship is sailing around in circles.

  17. cheapglazers says: Dec 30, 2013 9:59 AM

Today couldn’t have come any sooner! Everyone get in the victory formation for when Schiano gets axed today!

The Saints are done. They are one of the best teams in the NFL at home yet terrible when away. Never in the history of the NFL has a team been so lopsided. This is a team of confirmed cheaters and they have something fishy going on at the Stuperdome. Unfortunately for them they get 0 games there in the playoffs! Cheaters never prosper bye bye Brees (NFL’s golden boy).

Opinionated Giants Fan?? DEFINITELY. Ignorant?? NEVER! First and foremost its IGNORANT to think that just because a person is a fan of a particular team that they don’t have the knowledge/insight to comment objectively about another team!!! You need to work on your reading comprehension as it may stop YOU from appearing to be IGNORANT. I never wrote that Mike Williams was a ProBowler. I said VJax the Pro Bowler and Mike Williams. “Pro Bowler” signifies “singular” meaning 1. Otherwise I would have written “Pro Bowlers” signifying “plural” or more than 1!!! The comment I was responding to was about berating Mark Domenik for a poor job as a GM, citing a lack of talent at WR, O-Line, and RB positions. My position was that Domenik did a damn decent job of assembling talent. Case in point in free agency picking up Revis, VJax, Dashon Goldston, Carl Nicks. Drafting Gerald McCoy, Mark Barron, Doug Martin. While Martin was known as the feature back when he got injured Mike James stepped in and played LIGHTS OUT. James gets injured and Rainey played 10+ carries in 7 games and broke 100+ on 2 out of those 7 games with a 163 yard devastation against the Falcons! So yea, in my humble opinion if a 3rd-4th string RB who has been riding pine all season gets a shot and in just 7 opportunities has 2 100+ outings(with a rookie under center) he has certainly performed admirably! Now back in my younger days I probably would have “went in” on you about telling me to shut up. But I believe the above post is more than adequate in that regard!!!!

    Cheers

Love how the Saints are underdogs. That’s when they play the best. Whoever made the crap statement about Saints being cheaters needs to show proof of that. NOTHING was EVER proved by bountygate. It was simply goodhell over reaching to cover his butt for pending concussion lawsuits. He basically used a small market team to set an example for something that EVERY team was doing.

Sick of that being the narrative every time the Saints are mentioned. That’s why we will win. Keep doubting the Saints, they’ll show you! They will beat the Eagles who barely beat the
    Cowboys, book it!

WHO DAT! Look up the history of where this saying came from. Its not from ignorance, but rather the vernacular and accent of the people of New Orleans. I’m a BSN RN and hardly consider myself uneducated. It is simply a way of speaking in New Orleans, just like New Yorkers have certain cultural sayings that are unique to their region. If you were born and lived in New Orleans, you get it.

We also call ourselves YATS for the saying where ya at? Again, a language and cultural phenomenon unique to the city of New Orleans.
