Ed Reed wants to play another season

After some of his best years with the Ravens, safety Ed Reed pondered retirement into the offseason before returning to play another season.

Reed didn’t have one of his best years in 2013, washing out with the Texans before landing with the Jets where he closed the season playing mostly on passing downs. That led many to assume that the 35-year-old would actually go through with retiring, but Reed wasn’t going there on Monday.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that Reed said retirement is a possibility, but that he would like to play another season. Reed added that he’d be especially interested in playing another year for the Jets.

That’s not too surprising. The Jets scooped Reed up almost immediately after he was released in Houston, ignoring the lost step or two he showed early in the season and installing him right into the starting lineup. That didn’t work out well for the Jets, but coach Rex Ryan’s ardor for Reed never wavered even when Reed was moved into sub packages.

Now that Ryan’s back, Reed likely feels he has a chance to return as well. If he does, the Jets will still need to make other moves at safety to upgrade the talent at safety because it was a weak spot on this year’s defense.
