Falcons part ways with line coaches on both sides of ball

On the same day Falcons head coach Mike Smith said he was dissatisfied with the club’s play in the trenches this season, the team said that defensive line coach Ray Hamilton and offensive line coaches Pat Hill and Paul Dunn would not be back for the 2014 campaign.

Smith made his remarks about the club’s play along the line of scrimmage during a press conference with G.M. Thomas Dimitroff on Monday afternoon.

“If we’re going to be successful, we’ve got to be able to control the line of scrimmage,” Smith said. “I don’t believe that we did that effectively during the season, and it’s something that we definitely have to improve on.”

The 62-year-old Hill was head coach at Fresno State from 1997 through 2011 before joining the Falcons’ staff in 2012. Dunn, 53, had been on the Falcons’ staff since 2008, as had the 62-year-old Hamilton.

The Falcons were last in rushing yards gained and 31st in rushing yards allowed in 2013. Also, quarterback Matt Ryan was sacked a career-worst 44 times.

How we stayed competitive with some of the teams on our schedule this year with those rushing stats, I’ll never know.

A good start would be to add some semblance of talent to each respective line, no offense to Osi and Sam Baker.

That line was so porous that a drunk and high Jim Irsay could easily stumble across and record his first NFL sack.

I’m surprised that their o-line coach wasn’t hung for the Georgia Dome rafters as an indication that Arthur Blank fired him!

Games are own and lost in the trenches, and the falcons were horrendous in that area. Hence, a 4-12 record.

The Panther’s sacked Ryan 9 times Sunday. You can fire coaches, but until you get some talent on both sides of the line this will happen again.

Maybe the return of O-line coach Paul Boudreau (2008-2011) can work wonders. Peter Konz & Lamar Holmes & the draft pick could really benefit.

Wow Mike Smith doubles as a running back as well and for the bucs…shame!!

The dolphins o-line coach might be available.

That’s right Meek Smith. Deflect the attention from your own
useless performance. Dimitroff let too many quality players get away(Grimes, Abrahms etc.) and killed the depth with the Matty Melt contract and Julio Jones draft deal. The Falcons are done for the foreseeable future.

I think its rare that you find a 60 year old plus coach that has fresh ideas for the ever changing NFL.
Sure you can point to some low level assistants that have been doing it forever. But they usually are entrenched where they are at, not found at a mid major college.

Give me an older coordinator with new thinking assistants.

But still, most of noth Falcons lines (and a few other teams) were staffed by players who should be high school coaches and not NFL starters.

A lot of people are critical of the contract Flacco got. What about the contract Matt Ryan got?

Weren’t these two with them last year when they were supposedly good?

Too bad for Hill. He helped make Fresno State a regional power. In many ways, he still is Fresno State football.

He’ll land on his feet somewhere, though. He’s a good coach.

Blalock and Babineaux are the only linemen that should be starters next year. Everyone else is expendable. Extremely expendable.

    O that will fix it.
