Texans sign wide receiver Mike Thomas

Former Jaguars, Lions and Cardinals receiver Mike Thomas signed a reserve/future contract with the Texans on Monday, according to the NFL’s transactions.

Thomas was most recently with Arizona, which released him on August 30. He also spent time with Detroit in training camp.

Thomas, 26, was a fourth-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2009 draft. In his second NFL season, Thomas caught 66 passes for 820 yards with four touchdowns for Jacksonville. The Jaguars dealt him to the LIons in October 2012 for a fifth-round selection in the 2014 draft.

Thomas (5-8, 198) has caught 176 passes for 1,796 yards and seven touchdowns in his NFL career.

Uhh…..they have no head coach. The season just ended for them.

What exactly is the point of this?

He does owe the Texans for the one big highlight play of his career. (Hail Mary catch 2010). All kidding aside, from a Jags fan, good low risk pickup for the Texans. He had some talent and showed some good potential…before he got paid. I still hope to see the guy do good….just not on 2 particular weeks out of the season while he’s a Texan.

Mr Thomas is ONLY 26 years old, and he is DONE ?!

He has the entire off season to get better…

He can practice catching Hail Mary passes like he caught for the Jaguars to win a game for the Jaguars a few years back…from Jets current backup QB David Garrard…

All teams do this every year, when their seasons are over. They signed 6 guys to “Futures” contracts. Many of them won’t even make it to next summer. It’s just a way to lock up marginal prospects (usually) like rookies or practice squad-level guys who got cut this past season and are not on a roster right now. They just have first dibs on bringing them to camp next year and perhaps letting them compete for a job. That’s about it.
