With Lovie Smith tabbed to be the next head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a couple of names are already starting emerge as candidates to join his coaching staff.

According to Ben Goessling and Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier and Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Rod Marinelli are possibilities to join Smith on the defensive side of the ball. Both would be candidates for the defensive coordinator role with the Buccaneers.

Marinelli coached with Smith in Chicago for four years serving as assistant head coach, defensive line coach and defensive coordinator. Frazier is also familiar with the Cover 2 scheme run by Smith as he served as an assistant on Tony Dungy’s staff in Indianapolis as well.

Former University of California head coach Jeff Tedford is also reportedly lined up to serve as Smith’s offensive coordinator.

  1. You can hate on Lovie as much as you want, but a team that has Lovie Smith + Rod Marinelli at the helm will be super solid on defense.

And if the offense is anything like it was when Lovie coached the Bears, than their defense will probably score more points than their offense.

  2. Lovie, Fraizer (85 Bears), Marinelli all with Bear Down Bears D ties and the talent on that Bucs D unit. 2014 could be a really good year to be a Tampa fan, wish them all well.

  3. As a Vikings fan, I like Frazier as person, but the D went steadily downhill in his time as HC in MN. I thought he would have insight on drafting CB’s and safeties, but Harrison Smith is the only one drafted recently that looks like the real deal.

  4. Frazier would be the defensive coordinator, Marinelli can’t hold Frazier jock when it comes to coaching. Frazier got a raw deal in MN and is a better coach than both Marinelli and Smith. Frazier would turn Tampa’s defense into a top 10 and he’ll get another shot as a head coach in 2015. Vikings should have fired Spielman, he was the one who couldn’t come up with a QB the past 3 years.

  5. Is Norv Turner available yet? With him running the offense and Lovie running the defense, the Bucs would be in good hands.
