Redskins ask permission to talk to Perry Fewell

Philadelphia Eagles v New York Giants Getty Images

The Redskins are continuing to take a relatively low-key approach to their coaching search, adding another assistant to the mx.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, the Redskins have requested permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell for their vacant head coaching position.

He joins a list of known candidates including Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.

Fewell’s star has dimmed a bit, since he interviewed for four jobs in 2011 (Panthers, Browns, Broncos and Titans) but none last offseason.

Get the Rooney rule out of the way, then hire the guy you really want

  2. floratiotime says: Jan 1, 2014 5:19 PM

Hey, we need to interview a guy to fill that Rooney Rule requirement. What was the name of that fellow up in New York?

  3. crabcakesfootball says: Jan 1, 2014 5:24 PM

You guys are really paying attention considering they will have interviewed 2 black coaches this time next week.

    But nice ignorance.

    alshonbrandontandem:

Exactly. Except you never know what happens when you give somebody a chance to interview. Maybe Fewell actually has some good ideas and they say hey wait a minute, why not give the job to the guy that impressed us the most even if we didn’t initially plan to hire him? And that’s not getting the Rooney rule out of the way, it’s still giving an opportunity to somebody that might have otherwise been overlooked. I’d gladly interview with any team for some chance for a job rather than receiving zero consideration. Too bad for me they don’t have an Unknown-Salty-Critic rule, otherwise I could have a shot too! Perry and I don’t care how we get our chance to be heard, just let us try to win the job on our own merits and we can’t do that if you don’t even listen.

  5. sdisme says: Jan 1, 2014 5:26 PM

Do you need to request permission to interview a coordinator out of the playoffs?

  6. thegreatgabbert says: Jan 1, 2014 5:30 PM

Adding Fewell to the Dumpster Fire.

  7. harrisonhits2 says: Jan 1, 2014 5:30 PM

Yup the racists are out in force today. Almost every post under the Caldwell to interview for Washington team claims the Rooney Rule and its already adding up under this article.

    As to Fewell –

Ring ring: Mr Fewell, the Washington team is on the line and say they want to interview you.

Fewell: Tell them I’ll call them back after they get a new owner and quarterback.

  8. mantastic54 says: Jan 1, 2014 5:31 PM

I guess their thinking is if the interview Fewell and Caldwell, they’ll get the Rooney rule out if the way for the next time they hire a coach, when they inevitably fail in two years

  9. jimnaizeeum says: Jan 1, 2014 5:32 PM

Can’t wait to see the next coaching disaster for Snyder

  10. boyfromoldflorida says: Jan 1, 2014 5:32 PM

Maybe noted-lisper Dan Snyder is a big Jane’s Addiction fan.

  11. commonsensedude says: Jan 1, 2014 5:34 PM

Does the Rooney Rule stipulate that teams have to consider more than one black candidate? Or do you guys just assume that any time a black candidate is considered for a head coaching position it has to be because of the Rooney Rule/Affirmative Action?

If the latter is true, you are probably part of the reason many felt the Rooney Rule needed to be instituted in the first place.

  12. 5to46hawkfan says: Jan 1, 2014 5:34 PM

I wish they would stop allowing searches for coaches until the year is done!!! It takes focus away from the playoffs, which some assistant coaches should be focusing. It angers me a bit that the league allows this to happen.. To any team during playoffs – it’s not going to kill you to wait a couple of months when everything is over, SB champs are crowned and coaches, assist. Coaches are free to go wherever they want!!

  13. MichaelEdits says: Jan 1, 2014 5:36 PM

Perry Fewell should be begging the Giants to refuse to give Washington permission.

  14. statsdolie says: Jan 1, 2014 5:40 PM

Bringing up the Rooney rule when the team nickname is considered racist itself just ironic

  15. skinsfan91 says: Jan 1, 2014 5:41 PM

Noted lisper? Huh? Perry Ferrel sings for Jane’s Addiction.

  16. mhohmann says: Jan 1, 2014 5:42 PM

Because of the Rooney rule, it’s only normal to assume all black candidates are to adhere to that dumb rule. It makes black canditates look less qualified.

  17. mysonzdad says: Jan 1, 2014 5:50 PM

Newsome didn’t need the Rooney Rule to get the GM job with Cleveland/Baltimore. Neither did Dungy with Tampa or Shell with Oakland. I’m white but the fact this rule exists is sad and in a way discriminatory.

  18. PriorKnowledge says: Jan 1, 2014 5:55 PM

FYI: Redskins have to ask permission because he is still under contract for next year. However, most coordinator contracts have a clause that says employer has to grant permission if new position is a promotion over current position.

  19. luckyarmpit says: Jan 1, 2014 5:58 PM

I’d rather them interview, and subsequently hire, Kevin Killdri…. errr…. I mean Gilbride.

  20. bluewinger says: Jan 1, 2014 6:05 PM

Asa Giant fan I hope so. Then we can sign Spags back. Skins might want to look at Gilbrite too.

    ————————
We’ll never really know, will we? That’s the problem, and the tragedy, of the Rooney Rule. It’s an idiotic, insulting rule and needs to be scrapped immediately.

  23. petehemlock says: Jan 1, 2014 6:08 PM

Sounds like an out of the frying pan, into the fire career move, but I guess when you have NYG on your resume you can’t really be picky.

  24. commonsensedude says: Jan 1, 2014 6:14 PM

Simple logic would say that it’s not possible for BOTH Jim Caldwell and Perry Fewell to be Rooney Rule candidates, because the rule says that only one minority candidate has to be interviewed.

Even if one of them were interviewed for the purpose of complying with the Rooney Rule, by the time the second of them is interviewed, the rule would have already been satisfied.

At what point can a black candidate be considered for a Head Coaching position and not be assumed to be there because of the Rooney Rule? The 4th or 5th candidate?

  25. bbk1000 says: Jan 1, 2014 6:24 PM

Giants fan here…..Perry go, Perry go, Perry go, Perry go…..

  26. koolrepetoire says: Jan 1, 2014 6:29 PM

A black QB deserves a black HC. Now can we get a Rooney rule for ownership & being GM’s? BTW, sdisme you do know a coach employed by another team has to have permission to seek another job while employed right? I’m just sayin’. Oh, & there goes that silly Rooney rule theory. Can we get Todd Bowles, Lovie Smith, & others to be considered?

  27. lennydpocketqb says: Jan 1, 2014 6:32 PM

  28. punksinplay says: Jan 1, 2014 6:38 PM

  29. wttoolman says: Jan 1, 2014 6:51 PM

  30. uwsptke says: Jan 1, 2014 6:59 PM

They could be employing an old Al Davis trick and just bring in a handful of candidates that you really just want to ask them schematic questions. Who better to ask about your offensive woes than a division rival’s defensive coordinator?

  31. matt4477 says: Jan 1, 2014 7:04 PM

Doesn’t sound like Giants fans are thrilled with Perry’s body of work. Please Dan, don’t hire him

  32. pksoze says: Jan 1, 2014 7:06 PM

Perry Fewell was a SB winning coordinator, and coached a top 10 defense this year. But yeah he is an affirmative action hire. But I guess a guy like Norv Turner earns it. A lot of you people are jokes and you can thumbs down all you want. I don’t need the approval of racists.

  33. dlr4skins says: Jan 1, 2014 7:09 PM

As long as they don’t interview Jerry Jones for GM they’ll continue to improve.

  34. tigersfandan says: Jan 1, 2014 7:11 PM

I would argue that people assume Caldwell and Fewell are Rooney Rule interviews, not because of racism, but rather because both Caldwell and Fewell are very underwhelming candidates. If they were interviewing Lovie Smith or Todd Bowles, maybe folks would be singing a different tune.

  35. chargrz says: Jan 1, 2014 7:11 PM

Rooney Rule is a joke! Just hire the most qualified coach period.

  36. koolrepetoire says: Jan 1, 2014 7:14 PM

That is the Perry Fewell that beat Tom Brady for a Superbowl victory isn’t it? Yep that’s him. That is the Perry Fewell who hasn’t had any good LB’s, & no consistent pass rush along with a turnover happy “FRANCHISE” QB right? Yep that’s him. Can Marc Ross draft him some good CB’s? Can Jerry Reese get him a LB Corp & the JPP of 2011? My bad.

Are you people criticizing or just saying he’s an affirmative action hire I see a lot of the latter.

Perry Fewell has done a lot more in his career than Tom Cable but nobody accuses Cable of only getting interviews because of his skin color.

It’s like you people think only white people earn their jobs .

  39. tigersfandan says: Jan 1, 2014 7:56 PM

    @pksoze

In my opinion, race shouldn’t play a factor in the hiring process at all. However, because of the Rooney Rule, it does.

  40. blackqbwhiterb says: Jan 1, 2014 7:56 PM

Well, It’s like you people think owners would never hire a black guy unless they’re forced to!

  42. bjames65 says: Jan 1, 2014 8:12 PM

If they just hired the most qualified coaches both Caldwell and Lovie would have been hired last year. Both took their teams to the Super Bowl. Both have winning records as NFL coaches. Both won Super Bowls as coordinators. None of the socalled top candidates have anything close to that type of resume.

  43. charger383 says: Jan 1, 2014 8:15 PM

I don’t think that. I just think that when a black coach who is not exactly adored by the fans of his own team (as is the case with Fewell) is interviewed for a head coaching job, it’s not too hard to connect the dots.

Caldwell is nothing without Manning. That became obvious in 2011. Lovie should get another chance.

  46. bjames65 says: Jan 1, 2014 8:28 PM

How is Josh McDaniels a better candidate than Caldwell? Josh has a losing record as an NFL head coach and has not won a Super Bowl as a coordinator in years.

  47. koolrepetoire says: Jan 1, 2014 8:29 PM

If there was no Rooney rule do you really think Caldwell, Fewell, Bowles, etc. would get interviewed for Head Coaching jobs to run a billionaire’s team? Really? Would a Leslie Frazier get a job? Isn’t Tomlin a product of it? And he’s arguably the NFL’s best HC. Definitely he’s the best young HC.

  48. bjames65 says: Jan 1, 2014 8:37 PM

    Tigerfandan,
None of the other top coaches are nothing without their great players. Would Josh McDaniels even be in the discussion if they didn’t have Brady? What about the Bronco coordinators? Do you think they would be the top seed in the AFC without Manning? Your statement doesn’t make any sense. All of the top candidates are with teams who are winning due to their great players not because they had a journeyman at qb and they won with him.

Hmm…if only there was a way we could figure out if an interview was simply for Rooney Rule compliance. Perhaps if teams interviewed more than one black candidate…oh wait. Like Washington just did.

How many Head Coaching job where available last year. How many this year. It is obvious Owners are hiring the wrong coaches for what every reasons.

I keep hearing Seattle OC name, it is more to coaching than calling plays . I keep hearing Jay Gruden name, it is more to coaching than calling plays ie Norv Turner

    Hire the best qualified candidate.
