Bears extend Tim Jennings, Matt Slauson for four years

Quarterback Jay Cutler won’t be the only player sticking around Chicago.

General Manager Phil Emery announced Thursday that cornerback Tim Jennings and guard Matt Slauson have both signed four-year deals with the team that will keep them from hitting free agency in March. With those three deals and the previous signing of kicker Robbie Gould, the Bears have elected to keep several of the impending free agents that populated their roster in 2013.

Cornerback Charles Tillman is another one of those players and Jennings’ deal could wind up impacting Tillman’s chances of sticking with the Bears. Jennings is almost three years younger than Tillman, who missed half the season with a torn triceps, and the Bears will only have so much money to spend at any one position.

Emery said Jennings’ deal was about “rewarding excellence” for a player who has gone to a Pro Bowl and been named second-team All-Pro during his four years in Chicago. Jennings started all 16 games this season and finished with 57 tackles, four interceptions and two interception returns for touchdowns. Jennings has 13 picks and three scores over the last two seasons and will likely be the top corner in Chicago next year if Tillman moves on.

Slauson was signed to a one-year deal before last season as part of the Bears’ effort to fix their frequently ineffective offensive line. Emery praised Slauson as a “key part” of the unit’s improvement in 2013, which was enough for the team to commit to him for the long term.

Great moves, both players are well deserving and have several strong years ahead. Hope Emery has Money left to fix the Defense. Jennings move was needed, we need to blow up the rest. Outside of Briggs and Peanut, not much worth keeping….

This is good news for us Bears fans. Now, if they can just lock up Tillman, we will then have secured the best cornerback in the league. Tillman’s blue collar, just go out and do it, is in stark contrast to the look at me, DICK Sherman who wishes he could play at Tillman’s level.

Great move by the Bears. But not nearly enough to offset the Cutler blunder.

Congrats Tim Jennings! I love you as player, and in a Chicago Bears uniform!

I just want to know if Matt Slauson paid tribute to the late, great Johnny Carson by cutting off his slauson at the Slauson Cutoff.

Is it just me, or would Tillman be worth extending as a CB that could transition to S his last few years? He’d be better there than either of the clowns starting there right now, and could slide in if the team thinks he’s lost a step. Is that crazy to think?

Tillman is NOT moving to safety! He was ranked as one of the top 5 CB’s in the NFL just last year!
The Bears need to find 2 guys who can play the position and leave Tillman where he is!

The Bears better sign Tillman soon, or Lovie will make the Peanut Puncher an offer he can’t refuse.
