Cowboys would have to approve Marinelli move to Tampa

Rod Marinelli served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for Lovie Smith during their time together with the Chicago Bears.

Marinelli appears set to join Smith on his staff in Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator but there could be one hitch that could stop the move.

According to Todd Archer of, the Dallas Cowboys would have to approve any move Marinelli wishes to make. He’s under contract with the Cowboys for next season as the team’s defensive line coach. The Cowboys have blocked assistants Joe DeCamillis and Tony Sparano from taking jobs in recent seasons and only are obligated to allow assistants to interview for head coaching jobs.

Marinelli was with Smith from 2009-2012 in Chicago and coached in Tampa Bay as an assistant from 1996-2005.

Let Marinelli walk, get rid of Kiffin, and bring in Leslie Frasier for the DC job. As of right now, that would be my choice.

That might not be the best move for the Cowboys though. If you are an assistant and you have more than 1 job offer, who do you go to: the team that will allow you to move to a better job with a different team, or the team who blocks you from doing so?

That’s one guy in Dallas I defiantly don’t want to see leave!

It would be wrong for him to leave after only 1 year.
Kiffin built this new group and Marinelli was a major part.

Marinelli would be a great hire. His players loved him and worked hard for him. I would be stoked about this acquisition.

Lovie Smith was fired from the Bears because he couldn’t solve the offensive side of the game. Great Defensively though, but I feel like that the Bucs had a decent defense, so not much will change!

Would Marinelli make a good GM?
