Colts linebacker Robert Mathis finished his 2013 season with a flourish.
Mathis had five sacks over the final five weeks of the regular season, helping the Colts close with four wins in their final five games and helping him earn the AFC defensive player of the month award for December.
Those five sacks left Mathis with 19.5 on the season, which makes him the sack king of the 2013 season by a half-sack over Rams defensive end Robert Quinn. Mathis also forced four fumbles over the last five games of the season, doubling his total from the first 11 games and making him the league leader (Quinn was second) in that metric as well.
All that havoc in the pocket makes Mathis a strong contender for the defensive player of the year award and it should lead the Chiefs to make stopping him a top priority during this weekend’s playoff matchup.
