Raiders sign Trent Edwards to future contract

Quarterback Trent Edwards was among three players signed to reserve/future contracts by the Oakland Raiders on Thursday.

Edwards was with the Raiders in training camp in 2011 but was released after Kyle Boller beat him out for the backup spot to Carson Palmer.

Edwards did not play in the league this season after being released by the Chicago Bears during final cuts in August.

Edwards has started 33 games over six seasons for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles. Edwards had thrown for 6,033 yards with 26 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

In addition to Edwards, the Raiders signed defensive tackles David Carter and Torell Troup to reserve/future contracts.

How do guys that are awful keep getting jobs? Edwards, Curtis Painter, etc. Do you think after almost 10 years in the league, he’s suddenly going to not be awful? I mean, I guess it happened with Josh McCown, but for every one time that happens, theres 10 other guys that collect millions of dollars over the course of their careers to not perform.

Wait a minute.. Kyle Boller is STILL in the NFL!?!?!? He’s HORRIBLE.

Brady Quinn has a job, Jon Kitna got a call, Mark Sanchez is employed, Brandon Weeden is a starter… but Vince Young is not on a roster at all.

Wait till one of the lineman flinch at him and he falls down onto a fetal position.

If Kyle Boller beat anyone at camp that person is not a NFL QB. I bet I could make it a tough choice for the staff if I went up against Boller in camp.

Boller beat out Edwards in camp to be the back up for Jason Campbell. Palmer wasn’t on the team then.

Waste of money. The guy cannot handle the speed/tempo of the pro game……even my Bills figured that out …….after wasting 2 seasons on him…

  11. araidersfan says: Jan 3, 2014 8:05 AM

I’m not really hyped about signing Edwards. But at least the Raiders didn’t trade any draft picks to get him.

Quick question for anyone that knows:

If a player signs a futures contract, is he still eligible to sign woth a playoff team while they are still playing?

  17. socalraider909 says: Jan 3, 2014 10:00 AM

We should be signing our own guys I don’t know what’s the hold up

  18. mdobrasz says: Jan 3, 2014 10:20 AM

This dude is worthless in the NFL. Maybe the CFL could use him….either way, he needs to get the hell off my team ASAP!

Finally got that much needed franchise QB!

How is Trent Edwards a better option than Tim Tebow ?

    Someone had to say it.

  21. raider1970 says: Jan 3, 2014 3:15 PM

Thx Mark Davis in Reggie we trust, yeah right. Maybe Raleigh would pick a better QB.

  22. djshnooks says: Jan 3, 2014 4:42 PM

Lol, taking the Bills’ castoffs…especially Torell Troup who never got on the field in his 3 years in Buffalo…he’s a bum.

  23. dougydougdoug says: Jan 3, 2014 4:44 PM

Mark my words. Edwards will be competing with whomever the Raiders ill-advisably pick up as a presumptive starter, this off-season. Come training camp 2014, the Raiders will still not be able to commit to a final starter.

  24. silverandblack052099 says: Jan 3, 2014 5:03 PM

He will never play a down for the Raiders so why bother signing him in the first place?

They should have kept Tyler Wilson around instead of signing some washed up vet.

  25. andyr2120 says: Jan 3, 2014 5:30 PM

He’s just a camp arm to have around for the off-season. He’ll be cut before the first preseason game. You guys don’t follow football much, do you?

  26. radrntn says: Jan 3, 2014 6:07 PM

all good, nothing wrong with adding depth, and let guys battle it out and earn a spot….just getting started…. a lot more to follow…Go Reggie…Go Raiders!

  27. chazatlas says: Jan 3, 2014 7:17 PM

these scrap QB’s keep getting signed yet Tebow can’t get a legitimate shot? It’s obvious Goodell is uncomfortable with a super devout Christian as an NFL QB, blatantly obvious.

Honest opinion, please: How well did the Raiders’ quarterback competition work out for you, this season?

  29. salviefresh says: Jan 7, 2014 3:31 PM

ugh… its basically just an invite to training camp.
