Report: Titans have talked to potential coach candidates

Titans owner Tommy Smith is meeting with coach Mike Munchak today, perhaps with the idea of making him the former coach.

But while there’s no news, there are signs that Munchak’s future is less than secure.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Titans have “reached out and are working on potential candidates” in case they make a move on Munchak.

It’s not a completely unusual idea to have a contingency plan, but talking to job candidates before there’s a job is a strange way to do business. Maybe Munchak will get a Tony Sparano extension out of the deal.

Munchak seems like a great guy. I just think the Titans need a coach with a little more fire and it is time to cut Chris Johnson loose and go for a more dynamic offense. The Titans are one of those teams that are going to win six or seven games every year because they do play hard, but are rarely going to win more than 9 games.

The reality is, the Titans may not be able to do better than Munchak especially if Smith is budget-minded when it comes to HC salary. The worst thing would be to slam the door on Munch first and then be scrambling to fill the job with a warm body if your top choices pass. I’d rather they feel like they know who the next guy is and are aligned with that guy’s vision before they cut ties with Munch.

Yeah, he hasn’t delivered enough wins to date and his job should be on the line for that, but it’s not like you don’t still root for the guy. Munchak is a class act.
