In remarkable rally, Colts overcome 28-point deficit, beat Chiefs 45-44

Dunta Robinson, T.Y. Hilton AP

In one of the biggest comebacks in NFL postseason history, the Colts rallied from a 28-point third-quarter deficit to stun the hard-luck, injury-riddled Chiefs 45-44 in Saturday’s wild-card game in Indianapolis.

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck threw for 443 yards and four touchdowns, three of which came in the second half, as Indianapolis closed from the clouds to nail Kansas City just before the wire.

The Colts took their one and only lead of the game with 4:29 left in regulation when Luck connected with wideout T.Y. Hilton for a 64-yard touchdown.

On their ensuing drive, the Chiefs would march into Indianapolis territory, but when Kansas City wideout Dwayne Bowe was carried just out of bounds on a potential 4th-and-11 reception, the Colts had their first postseason win since 2009.

The Chiefs took a 38-10 lead early in the second half on quarterback Alex Smith’s fourth TD pass of the game, a 10-yarder to tailback Knile Davis. Then, the Colts, led by Luck, Hilton and tailback Donald Brown, unleashed a rather remarkable and sustained closing kick.

The Colts got the ball rolling with a 10-yard Brown TD run with 11:52 left in the third quarter. On the Chiefs’ ensuing possession, Colts outside linebacker Robert Mathis forced a Smith fumble, which was recovered by inside linebacker Kelvin Sheppard. The Colts cashed in the takeaway, with Brown’s three-yard TD catch narrowing the Chiefs’ edge to 38-24 midway through the third quarter.

Now, it was Kansas City for whom the problems were starting to mount. On Brown’s second touchdown, the Chiefs lost cornerback Brandon Flowers to a potential concussion, which added to an injury list that already included tailback Jamaal Charles and wideout Donald Avery, who each left to be tested for concussions and did not return. Later, Davis, who had replaced Charles, would leave with a fourth-quarter injury.

The Chiefs would stem the tide briefly, with safety Husain Abdullah’s second third-quarter interception of Luck setting up a field goal to give Kansas City a 41-24 lead with a little more than four minutes left in the period.

But back came the Colts, with Luck hitting tight end Coby Fleener for a 12-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 41-31.

Then, early in the fourth quarter, the Colts got a big dose of good fortune. On 2nd-and-goal from the Kansas City two-yard line, Brown fumbled, but the ball bounced to Luck, who took it in for a touchdown.

Suddenly, the Colts were within 41-38 with less than 11 minutes left. The Chiefs needed to counterpunch in the worst way, and to some extent, they did, tallying another field goal to end a drive bleeding about five minutes off the clock.

But it was just a glancing blow. And then, Luck hit Hilton to give the Colts the lead — and the game.

Hilton, a second-year pro from Florida International, played at a blue-chip level on the playoff stage, catching 13 passes for 224 yards and two TDs. Luck, meanwhile, overcame three interceptions to earn his first playoff win as the Colts’ starter.

For the Chiefs, Saturday’s loss was another heartbreaking chapter in a series of recent playoff struggles. The Chiefs have not won a postseason game since January 16. 1994, when they defeated the Houston Oilers 28-20.

For much of Saturday, they looked on their way to victory. Smith played a wonderful game, throwing for 378 yards.

Then, unbelievably almost, the Colts kicked it into gear.

See Chiefs fans? You mocked us Eagles fans when you were 9-0. Andy is Andy is Andy. Nice time management at the end of the game too! Its nice to be on the sideline of watching Reid choke it up again. Thank God hes outta here. We have a winner in the Chipper in town. And you have Big Red and all his same old blunders.

Unbelievable. And why in the world was Andy Reid still throwing the ball up 38-17 in the third? Granted Charles was out but Davis was on his way to having a monster game.

BTW Alex Smith proved he is a gamer and not a game manager. Much respect to him.

  26. razzmatazzcomics says: Jan 4, 2014 8:17 PM

And now Chiefs fans know what Eagles fans were glad to get rid of Andy Reid. Always outcoached and always losing to good teams. If you want to beat up and pad your record against the bad teams…… then Andy is your man. 9-0 against bum teams, then 0-3 against the godd teams to start the year. Outcoached and a loss in first playoff game. Yep, that’s Andy. Just wait till Andy has a few more years of bad draft picks and bad coaching hires. He will leave the Chiefs in smoking ruins. There’s no savior Chip Kelly to pull the Chiefs out of this death spiral. The smartest man in football was already hired by Philly. RIP Chiefs organization. Sad, so sad.

Reid can’t be blamed for Smith wasting 2 timeouts. You don’t see Luck not getting to the LOS on time. Chiefs were 2-14, to 11-5, to losing to a Colts team 45-44 in the playoffs.

Sucks but this Chiefs fan is excited for the future.

  36. ratsfoiledagain says: Jan 4, 2014 8:18 PM

As much as the Chiefs offense needed to score a TD or two in the second half, the loss leans a bit more on KC’s D than the O.

You cannot give up 35 points in the second half when you have a 28 point lead at half time.

  37. gadlaw2012 says: Jan 4, 2014 8:18 PM

    That game was pathetic.

  39. gbatap says: Jan 4, 2014 8:19 PM

2-14 team last year, playoffs this year and all it took for Indy to win is to have Jamaal Charles out, half the defense getting injured and a lucky bounce off an olinemans head on Lucks rushing TD.

Thanks for the great season KC!

  49. bigbluenationdb says: Jan 4, 2014 8:21 PM

That’s why Luck was the #1 pick. He doesn’t hide behind a defense like Wilson or run a college offense like RG3.

  50. profootballsquawk says: Jan 4, 2014 8:21 PM

We all know the refs changed the game with the botched strip sack fumble call.

I don’t understand why the refs aren’t told to rule in favor of the team who had the ball and then let the replay determine if it truly was a turnover. Instead they guess that the colts recovered and then can’t determine if they actually did so they say ‘the ruling stands as called’. This is a terrible job of officiating.

  51. ravenswhat says: Jan 4, 2014 8:22 PM

Nice win by the Colts but it really is tainted. It is embarrassing how many injuries the artificial turf caused today to key Chief players like Jamaal Charles. I have to think Chiefs fans feel they were robbed by an inferior playing surface today. After today’s embarrassment, I would have to think the NFL should consider outlawing artificial turf. You can’t have key playoff games decided on such an awful playing surface that’s prone to causing injuries.

Blaming Favre for that loss to the Giants is as short-sighted as most of the posts at this site. Favre kept putting the Packers ahead, and the defense kept giving up points. Go look at the game log: The Green Bay defense made only one stop in the second half. ONE. Eli scored points on all of the other possessions in the second half, including the one with 1 minute to go, when they kicked a field goal to tie. It’s hard to win games without some defense. Never mind that the Giants were peaking at that point and went on to beat the undefeated Patriots, who were considered invincible.

All that may be true, but if Favre doesn’t throw that, I’m so cold I just want to get this game over with, pick….

As a broncos fan I can honestly say that after 2 years in the league this kid looks like the best QB in football right now. He has Mannings smarts, Rogers arm, and RG3s athletism. Eagles fans calling out Andy Reid on this loss are delusional. Excellent game by the chiefs, just an incredible performance Luck to pull that come back out. I like how the eagles fans think that the time management came into play in this game. You think after 4th down play that the colts weren’t going to get a 1st down? 44 points of offence, +3 in turnover battle. The chiefs deserved a better fate. Incredible game.

After years of watching Reid coach in Philly.. One thing is apparent.. The only thing Reid can finish is a sandwich. Chiefs started 9-0 and only won twice after that. 38 – 10 lead. Can’t finish. He was holding that play chart on the last drive and his hands were shaking.

I just read through the comments and I am very surprised at the number of eagles fans posting “this is why we got rid of Reid” or “typical Reid”. To all of those eagles fans, I’m a Viking can and watched my team demolish your pathetic excuse for a team and you only made the playoffs because romo had surgery and you played in one of the worst divisions in the league. I would also like to see how well the eagles perform with shady on the sidelines for 95% of the game.

That was a great playoff game. Well fought on both sides. The deciding factor could have been the injuries but luck was lights out the second half. I’m just happy it was a good game.

  114. theRed says: Jan 4, 2014 9:02 PM

One of the biggest themes that will come this offseason is the insane amount of injuries that have decimated many teams in the NFL.

The Chiefs racked up injuries late in the season and in this game. So did the Colts earlier this season. But never have I seen so many great teams hobbled coming into the playoffs. Although everyone seemed evenly matched, most of these teams have lost so many key players they don’t even look the same.

And big players, heavily connected to the NFL brand, aren’t even on the field influencing who wins the championship. Injuries are part of every team every season, but this season might be the cruelest on the league as a whole.

Everyone is wondering where the spikes of injuries are coming from, but be sure its going to be a tense free agent market, as teams need need to reorganize from this bloodbath. And the committees are going to have their hands full, especially when you have pretty much half of last year’s pro bowl squad all on IR.

It’s almost becoming a game of “whoever has the least injuries or the best practice squad depth (see Patriots) will have a chance at the Superbowl”.

Nothing against the Colts. If anything they had to overcome immense injuries to be where they’re at. But they, along with many other teams, are one Donald Brown sprain or Jimmy Graham concussion from losing it all. This injury issue needs to be addressed; the game is losing its meritocracy of tangibles to win against the backdrop of the Russian Roulette of ACL tears.

That’s far more success than Chip Kelley has had at this point.

That being said. I think luck took a huge step forward today. He went from peyton in the postseason to john elway. Hats off to luck and the colts u showed a lot of heart. Good luck next week.

  128. dodgerlakerfan1969 says: Jan 4, 2014 9:13 PM

As great as Peyton is he could never do what Luck did today with that offensive line and receiving corps. Luck scored 45 points with the lowest paid receiving corps in the playoffs against a top 5 defense. He now has as many playoff comebacks and game winning drives as Peyton has had his whole career.ONE. I think Irsay made a wise decision in GETTING and KEEPING Luck. Anyone that thinks Irsay was trying to win games in 2011 is just a delusional Peyton ball washer. Luck will do things in INDY that Peyton could never do, most importantly win in the playoffs.

  129. tmb333 says: Jan 4, 2014 9:15 PM

On another note, the officiating continues to be below par. Not one OL holding call on over 100 drop backs? They missed multiply false starts including at least 3 on the Colts RT. Two defensive holdings. One KC overcame with 7 pts and the Colts only got 3. Two blatant pic plays by KC and a couple of offensive PI when their WRs were blocking downfield prior to a catch on a pass that crossed the LOS.

The problem is folks say these even out but they really don’t. It matters when they occur and the game situation at the time.

The officials effect the game by not enforcing the rules and requiring the players to adjust and play within the rules.

I doubt anyone forgot that. The turnovers were terrible and 2 of the three were clearly bad plays by Luck. But part of what makes Luck great is that he doesn’t fall apart when things go wrong, including when he makes major mistakes. His stats after picks are actually phenomenal, both in college and in the NFL. He had a really bad game in some ways, but he still managed to win. That’s what Andrew Luck does … He wins. And to a large extent he’s the one who makes it happen … Just ask his teammates and coaches. Obviously, it would be better if he didn’t have the turnovers, and he’s been pretty good this year. If he has as many turnovers against NE or Denver next, weekend it will be really tough to pull it out!

The Chiefs DC will be updating his resume on the flight home.

I will take you a step further you could tell momentum had shifted on that sack fumble by Mathis that was recovered by the Colts. Then the score was 38-10, the Colts scored thereafter, i kinda had a feeling that the Chiefs were about to choke this up. And yes when you are mounting a comeback sometimes balls bounce your way, such is sports and fortune favors the fool. :)

  149. tklind says: Jan 4, 2014 9:48 PM

I watched the game and it boils down to this—some players have a cloud hanging over their head—and Alec Smith is one of them. His fumble in the second half turned the momentum in the Colts favor. And then when the Chiefs were close to kicking the winning field goal Smith gets called for intentional grounding taking them out of field goal range. No matter how good he played in this game he still can’t win! That cloud will get you every time.

Andy Reid put on a 2nd half clinic with his prevent victory defense. Its the very reason he was fired in Philly, and the same reason he should be fired by the Chiefs tomorrow morning.

Seriously, Luck was only able to play so well because the Chief’s played one of the worst defensive halves you will ever see a team play in the NFL. Their coverage was weak, and they never made any sort of effort to put pressure on Luck. They sat back, gave Luck all the time and space in the world, and collapsed like only an Andy Reid team could.

Thankfully I’m not a Chief’s fan, but I feel really bad for those that are. You were robbed on a victory by your very own coach.

Someone put kaepernick>Smith….that’s funny, silly niner fans.

“You kids claiming to have never seen a game like this before clearly were too young to watch the Houston Oilers lose a monster lead to the Bills in the exact same fashion…”

Except the Bills were the ones without their HOF Defensive player, their HOF RB and their HOF QB.
Houston didn’t suffer any catastrophic injuries like KC did today.

Kaep is light years ahead of where Smith was at the same point in their careers. That’s not even an intelligent discussion. For the most part Alex has never looked better tonight. When they started wasting timeouts though I thought he was back on the 49ers again. Deja vu. Luck is a machine. Wild game!

Everyone stop acting so shocked. No one outside of KC thought the chiefs were legit contenders.

The legend of Andrew Luck began today, you guys.

It’s going to be above freezing in Denver next week by the way

Colts-Colts-Colts what a great Game The Luke was rocking! My son and I part of the action-Sooooo proud of my team–Colts Physical Game! I am exhausted from watching. Luck, made great throws and was clutch…..again.

Great playoff win by Indy but their next opponent will be tougher as they won’t be facing Andy Reid.

  183. uraxcrunner says: Jan 5, 2014 8:13 AM

When that fumble bounced off the lineman back to Luck and he scored I knew it was happening. Play that turned around the game and started the comeback. Knew then it was Colts game. Fun to watch.

Karma KC. You would’ve lost even if Succop had opportunity to kick. He proved that last week in San Diego!!

    Sincerely,

    All Steeler Fans

The Colts played a great game in the second half. I was rooting for Alex Smith though. I was mad at my team(the 49ers) for the way they treated Smith and wanted to see him go to the Superbowl this year. He should never have lost his job at S.F. The Chiefs should have won that game easily. Andy Reids clock management and the defense going to sleep in the second half lost them that game.

That 2nd half summed up Andy Reid’s coaching career. Face down, bright red, looking at play sheet & not the field/game. The famous Reid Deer In Headlights look we’ve all seen before.

  187. johnnyprc says: Jan 5, 2014 1:35 PM

All this Chiefs and A.Reid bashing for what? He took a team that was horrible last year and made them playoff contenders, while having a great season.

Congrats to Colts but there is no need to bash Chiefs…I think they look great going into next year and everyone in KC should be proud.

    NFL = NBA.

Have to beat the other team and the refs when you play one of the preordained league golden boys.

See Pittsburgh vs Seattle when the league wanted the Bus to get a ring.

  189. andyisfat says: Jan 5, 2014 5:06 PM

Typical Andy Reid loss. He was eating a three foot hoagie at halftime rather than making game plan adjustments.

  190. andyisfat says: Jan 5, 2014 5:07 PM

    Typical Andy.

    Dear NFL,

    We tried to tell you.
