Redskins say Griffin won’t be involved in coaching search

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins believes quarterback Robert Griffin III will be involved in the team’s coaching search.  The Redskins say he won’t be.

Team spokesman Tony Wyllie points out via email, in response to our item containing quotes Cousins apparently gave to ESPN, that G.M. Bruce Allen has said that Griffin won’t be involved in the process.

Of course, that doesn’t change what Cousins said.

Besides, who cares if Griffin is involved?  The relationship between coach and quarterback has become even more critical as the game continues to skew toward the pass.  When a team already has anointed a franchise quarterback and isn’t inclined to give the new coach a chance to choose Cousins or someone else, it’s important for the Redskins to hire someone who can get along well with Griffin before it’s too late.

So, yes, Griffin should be involved.  And, no, the Redskins shouldn’t care if the backup quarterback expresses a belief that Griffin will be involved.

Might as well just give the job to RG II.

  4. believeland1954 says: Jan 4, 2014 4:42 PM

Does anyone still care what the Skins do? They are irrelevant.

  5. thestrategyexpert says: Jan 4, 2014 4:43 PM

That’s fine, he doesn’t have to be involved. This is really a very simple job description and arguably the simplest HC job description in the NFL with the way that things are set up and with Bruce Allen having all the power.

Here’s the job, you need to do 2 things and 2 things only, you need to A) coach up RG3 and get the most out of him, and B) do that for everybody else too. If you can explain to us how you can do those 2 tasks, then you are the new HC.

  6. jayovalentine says: Jan 4, 2014 4:43 PM

    Mike Shanahan’s ego couldn’t develop RG3.

  7. thegreatgabbert says: Jan 4, 2014 4:44 PM

Robert’s involvement will be limited to advice on the coach’s choice of socks.

  8. acousticphan says: Jan 4, 2014 4:45 PM

He should have ZERO input. He’s a player, not part of the front office.

  16. chawk12thman says: Jan 4, 2014 5:03 PM

Your wrong Florio. The QB shouldn’t be involved in any personnel decisions. The Owner/GM should certainly look at the current talent and potentially hire a HC that can manage and direct the team, based on the QB and other talent they have and that is all.

The entire Redskins organization can’t stop sucking up to Griffin III. They’re following the lead set by their meddling, inept owner.

  19. drs76109 says: Jan 4, 2014 5:22 PM

Folks DC ought to interview: Todd Bowles, Wade Phillips, Brian Billick, Brian Popp (currently GM of the Montreal Alouettes but has been a HC too), Ken Whisenhunt, and yes, I’d even consider interviewing Marty Schottenheimer ( who did a pretty good job there before) and Norv Turner ( who was decent – certainly not as bad as Zorn or, arguably, Shanahan). Yes, even consider Gibbs 3.0.

Please, no college guys. It is a totally different game. Kelly in Philadelphia ( only one year, remember) is an anomaly.

Did this writer say RG III should have a part in the coaching search? What has RGIII done to prove he is going to be the long term QB? He had one decent season and one really bad one where he got benched. He doesn’t have a huge contract so they aren’t obligated to make sure he is their franchise QB if he isn’t performing. Other than the dumb amount of draft picks they gave up to get him the Redskins don’t need to get his input on who their next coach will be.

  34. nitzenbaum - not yer momma's 'skins fan says: Jan 4, 2014 6:15 PM

Shanahan couldn’t develop Griffin? He only had 2 years to do so including the injury in year two and strike in his rookie year, so zero offseason training. Give me a break!
They will surely be waiting for the playoff games to get going before choosing some worthy candidates to interview. I say Whisenhunt, but there are other good one in Cincy, etc.

Pft loves to troll redskins fans. No matter what redskins always wrong. If they said he would be meeting potential coaches, guarantee they’d kill that decision saying the player shouldn’t be involved.

No one talking about how bad franchise of Vikings, lions, browns and titans are for giving up on their coach. All except lions fired their coach before shanahan. Plus the redskins had a great season last year and have three rings I believe…. But yeah. They are worst franchise in nfl. More like one of most valuable money wise and have lots of fans so oft wants as revenue by creating controversy with the skins.

Using “logicalvoicesays’s” logic, RG III should be the head coach. According to logicalvoicesays there has never been nor will there ever be a greater QB in the history of the NFL in RG III. He might as well coach himself, because of his awesomeness!

  50. johnnybangry says: Jan 4, 2014 7:34 PM

  53. number1hawkfan says: Jan 4, 2014 8:04 PM

I have a solution to their problems. They need to change their name to the Washington RG3s. It would fix the public relations problem with their name. Might as well finish the job of mortgaging the franchise for this guy. Have fun finishing last in the NFC for the next 10 years.

as much of a joke as he Redskins might be there is always the Eagles. They have never won anything significant.

  56. pftstory says: Jan 4, 2014 10:19 PM

The need to hire a HC that can lead the team to wins. If RGIII hates the guy, but listens to him, and it results in wins, he as the player and a man should understand that it does not matter how he feels about him.
Shorter said, if the coach is good at his job, the players will like/love him. So don’t put the cart before the horse. Worry about getting a good coach first.
If the QB can’t win unless he approves of the coach, you do not have a franchise QB.

I think Cousins wants out of DC so he can have a shot as a starter. So rock the boat, just a tad.

  57. yordo says: Jan 5, 2014 1:43 PM

  58. bigbluenationdb says: Jan 5, 2014 3:57 PM

No coach with any experience wants to this job. It is train wreck. Bad owner, GM and a diva QB. The coach that is hired doesn’t have ties to RGME. What if Cousins outperforms RGME in camp and the new coach wants to go with Cousins. Then what. Danny boy and RGME and RG2 want something different.

    RGME = Vince Young 2.0

you watch him out on the field on game day…with the socks, the shoes, the visor with the stickers all over it, the 8 bracelets, the one sleeve on one arm and the other arm bare but the bare arm has a glove while the sleeved arm doesn’t….seriously what is this? Football or a fashion show? the draft picks the skins gave up for this clown is unbelievable.
