Dawson kicks San Francisco into divisional round

Dawson Getty Images

The good news for the Packers is that they won’t lose for the third straight year in the divisional round of the playoffs.

The 2013 Packers won’t get to that level of the postseason, thanks to a 33-yard field goal from Phil Dawson that gave the 49ers the win as time expired.  FOX’s replay showed the ball actually going through the arms of Packers cornerback Davon House, who had come around the edge in an effort to block the kick.

For San Francisco, it’s the third straight appearance in the NFL’s final eight.  The 49ers will travel to Carolina next weekend, which means that three of the four conference semifinal games will entail a rematch of a regular-season game.

The Packers have now lost three times to the 49ers in less than a calendar year, thanks to an ongoing inability to shut down quarterback Colin Kaepernick.  He rushed for 98 yards and threw for 227 on Sunday, including an 11-yard scamper on third and eight to move the ball into field goal range.

Still, the Packers didn’t capitalized on a major blunder by Kaepernick.  On the third play of the game-winning drive, Packers cornerback Micah Hyde jumped an out route intended for Anquan Boldin.  Hyde had the ball in his hands, but he was unable to secure the interception.

Dawson’s game-winning kick comes in his first year with the 49ers, after 14 years in Cleveland that included only one playoff game, a loss to the Steelers 11 years ago.

Let me guess , the Packers didn’t lose they “beat themselves” or the refs made em lose.

  2. hazelmn says: Jan 5, 2014 7:57 PM

We can dissect, overanalyze, and break down this game as much as we want. The storyline is rather simple, though:

The Packers still do not have an answer for Colin Kaepernick.

  3. jakec4 says: Jan 5, 2014 7:57 PM

That thing looked like a Ravens/Steelers slugfest. Definitely didn’t expect that kind of game. Great job, San Fran. Keeping the 49ers-Seahawks NFC Championship in order is the best thing for football.

Let me guess , the Packers didn’t lose they “beat themselves” or the refs made em lose…… Let the excuses start from the softest team in the NFL .

In a span of 1 year & 4 months, San Francisco defeated Green Bay all 4 times. If this doesnt spell out dominance to anyone then I don’t know what does. Kaepernick’s legs saved San Francisco on the drives that mattered most. Good luck to SF at Carolina next week.

  6. josh4519 says: Jan 5, 2014 7:58 PM

Colin Kaepernicks caught a lot of flack on here this season but credit where credits due. He played a great game today and led his team to a playoff victory.

    Well played young man.

Oh, that’s a heartbreaker. I feel for you Packer fans. The Vikings lost so many games this year in the same way, where the other team just marches down the field for the winning score and there’s nothing you can do about it. Yep, the Packers are just like the Vikings.

  8. cags777 says: Jan 5, 2014 7:59 PM

Congrats, 49ers! You won this game fair and square. More importantly, you won this game without assistance from the refs (Packers fans: take note).

  9. mrwalterisgod says: Jan 5, 2014 7:59 PM

Seattle will have a field day in two weeks, if the Niners make it that far. Kap is so limited as a passer it’s ridiculous.

Kap can’t run= no SF offense.

  10. cocheese000 says: Jan 5, 2014 7:59 PM

LOL to all the people that paid high dollar to sit out in the cold and watch their team lose.

Micah and Tramon need to work on their hops.

or we just need to draft some corners that don’t look like midgets in comparison to these beast sized receivers.

  32. artvan15 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:02 PM

Packers must have some of the dumbest defensive players. How many times are you going to let Kapernick get loose on the outside? It is so ridiculous. You can’t tell me that Capers hasn’t told them idiots to contain and don’t let him get outside. They just have ignorant players.

  33. contra74 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:02 PM

  36. cinvis says: Jan 5, 2014 8:02 PM

The 49ers better win this year. Kaep is going to demand a huuuuge raise (which he doesn’t deserve). After that he will be unwilling to take off and put his head on the line like he did today. Minus the players they will have to cut to accommodate his new contract equal mediocrity for years to come.

  37. purplepillager says: Jan 5, 2014 8:02 PM

  39. katejake says: Jan 5, 2014 8:03 PM

I’ve lived in Green Bay my whole life and all you dolts that think McCarthy is a good coach are delusional. This guy is the worst game planner and play caller I’ve seen. Not to mention Thompson, Rodgers has carried this team for years. He has saved the jobs of all these guys and made them look good. And I’m not even gonna start with Capers, but then again they need to decide which is it bad coaching by Capers or awful talent on Thompsons end

  40. qckappa says: Jan 5, 2014 8:03 PM

  41. scumpidude says: Jan 5, 2014 8:03 PM

  44. 1phd says: Jan 5, 2014 8:04 PM

  45. beedubyatoo says: Jan 5, 2014 8:04 PM

The only reason Hyde didn’t intercept that pass is that Kaepernick threw his usual poor pass that not even his receiver could catch. If he’s on target, Hyde has a pick six.

I’d take Rodgers as my qb any day, given the choice.

  46. andyreidisabeachedwalrus says: Jan 5, 2014 8:04 PM

Pretty sad when you know on those crucial 3rd & 10, 3rd & 8′s that Kaep is gonna scramble and the D still cant stop it. Don’t know how Capers survived after last years playoff debacle but def want to see a new D coordinator next year. Prolly wont happen…

For the Packers the Senior Bowl is the most important next step. Safety and some defense all around will be nice to fine.

  55. jonnyfootball82 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:05 PM

The fact of the matter is the Packers played their best, and they failed miserably. They lack discipline on defense and were overmatched for much of the game

  56. sickcub says: Jan 5, 2014 8:06 PM

Give credit to SF for overcoming the worst officiated game of the year. The non calls were ridiculous. I know the NFL wants the star QBs to be in the Super Bowl-they are making it obvious with the last two games Rodgers has played.

  59. ped013 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:06 PM

The Saints won on the road, as have the 49ers. Can we now put to rest the idea of reseeding the playoffs based on record? Leave it as it is; this weekend proved that it’s fine just the way it is. Good teams should be able to win on the road, and division winners should always host in the wild card round.

GB o-line stunk, GB defense kept collapsing when it needed to make a play, SF D played well, Kap ran all over them and made the passes he needed to make. If this game had been in SF the niners would have won by 10-14 points.

SF is good but still probably not SB good….we’ll see.

  79. 6250claimer says: Jan 5, 2014 8:09 PM

  85. jonathandiel says: Jan 5, 2014 8:10 PM

The Packers are really an amazing team. Don’t get me wrong. The 49ers won a good, physical football game fair and square. But there are some things you cannot deny: we made it to the playoffs despite our multiple injured players and we didn’t just hand this game over to the 49ers. We gave them one hell of a fight. We played better than I’ve seen in awhile and yeah, there’s a lot to work on this offseason but that was a damn close game. And the way the Packers keep showing up the face of adversity, never giving up, it just makes me even more excited for next season!

  86. duece5 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:10 PM

  87. mrlaloosh says: Jan 5, 2014 8:10 PM

  88. tokyosandblaster says: Jan 5, 2014 8:11 PM

And again, I’ll state the obvious: there is no such thing as a Viking fan. The people who claim to be are actually people who are just jealous of everything Wisconsin. They don’t cheer for the Vikings to win, but rather the packers to lose. That brings them more joy. Because Minnesota is a joke.

  89. duece5 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:11 PM

I loved watching Aaron rodgers’ head bounce off that frozen scummy looking field play after play after play. He looked so scared out there. He couldnt wait until the punter came out and he could go and hide on the sidelines.

  91. spthegr8 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:11 PM

  92. atwatercrushesokoye says: Jan 5, 2014 8:11 PM

Why are Seahawks so insecure? It’s like you’re so confused at the thought of having a good team you have to constantly comment on 49ers…actually all other team’s stories about how good your team is.

There’s no trophy for tying for the best record in the regular season, if you don’t win on February 2nd it means nothing.

  93. oaktown49er says: Jan 5, 2014 8:12 PM

I have a question for all you cats who think Kaepernick carried the team to victory.

What if Hyde picks that ball off with about 2 and a half minutes to go? How clutch is Kaepernick if GB takes that ball away and kicks the game winner instead? What would the headlines read then? Yeah, exactly. It is a game of inches and SF was lucky to win that game.

I didn’t expect any different result. I expected a pretty severe beat down by the Niners in that game. Either the Packers are better than all the haters think, or SF has no business in the playoffs either. Can’t have it both ways if you watched the game.

Packers fan here, and that was a Grade A slugfest. The post about Ravens v. Steelers was spot on.

The Niners made more plays, the Packers had several opportunities but just didn’t capitalize. And once again, they weren’t disciplined enough to stop Kaepernick.

Normally I’d be requesting Dom Capers be fired, but the game plan actually was pretty good, the Packer players just blew too many assignments.

The only nitpicking I’ll do is say that I wish Eddie Lacy was on the field for the final set of downs inside the 10 on the final Packers possession.

It’s funny reading a Seahawks fan talk about the 49ers limited passing offense, you realize the Seahawks are also extremely limited in the passing department. The two teams are basically mirror images of each other.
    ===============

Um, no, Russell Wilson is 4th in Yards per pass attempt. Colin Kaepernick is 8th, but Kaepernick is clearly lacking in his progressions .

  106. harrisbarton says: Jan 5, 2014 8:17 PM

The non-call on McDonald being held on that 4th down play was absolutely absurd. McDonald is starting to wrap Rodgers up and he literally gets pulled away from him. Am really glad that the officiating didn’t determine the outcome of the game, despite a big push by the refs to keep Rodgers on TV another week.

Congrats to the 49ers on their victory. But to you fans saying that the Packers were owned and all those comments like it was 49 to 0 are crazy. Now if the ref’s would have been on the field (oh I think I saw them) the game might have been that score. But, with the way the game was called it let a team with 4th string linebackers and conerbacks almost coming up with a victory. That is hardly owned. Feel thankful and move on. Good luck next week against a team with a real defense.

An injury riddled team making the playoffs – going point for point with a loaded team that’s been in the NFC Title Game and the Superbowl these past two years.

Or viking fans leaping for joy cause of a Packer loss.

You don’t even see browns/raiders/bills fans acting this pathetic cause the top dog in their division didn’t go all the way this year.

I’ve always liked Andy and was happy for his success in KC this year. But look how many of those “healthy” players went down against Indy because they weren’t game-ready. Yesterday’s loss was karma for bad decisionmaking … among other things.

Green Bay needs to get much faster on the back end and the linebacker corp needs to be revamped.

I habe a few things to say to anybody who wl listn fitst ofall the 49ers didn’t beathe Packers the Packers beat themselves also I’ve been a Packers fan my whole life since 1884 and I love my team 16-0 or 0-16 we are the greatest and classiest fans in sports because 1 we have sold out 381 consecutive games 2 you’re all just fans we are owners we are the only publicaly owned team in pro sporst also the Packers should have has a bye this week if the refs hadn’t stolen 4 ga,es from us fist of all they wrongly called a late hit on Clay Mthhews in week 1 then gave the 49ers an extra down allowing them to score a touchdown instead of kicking a field goal so the Packers hd to go for a Hail Mary on the final plat also Rodgers wa out for 7 fames because of an illegal horsecollar tackle that wasn’t called against the Bears and a bad no catch call againt Quarless on 3rd down those 2 calls cost us that game and let’snot foget tha many horrible calls that cost us the Eagles and Giants games such as Riley Cooper being given a touchdown on an incompletion and Jordy Nelson an incompletion a touchdown then the nextweek against the Giant we were given a runiing into the punter that should have been roughing so we wentfor it on 4th down when it should have been an automatic 1st down longstory sghort the refs cheated us out of a 1st round bye another reason we lost today was because Clay MMatthews and Sam Shields were injured finally I will be laughing at all of you haters whe the Pack wins the Super Bowl next year see you next year fokls.

  127. realfootballfan says: Jan 5, 2014 8:31 PM

The physicality that Eddie Lacy brings to the Packers is something for them to build upon and will help them win these kind of games if they can instill that same mentality back on the defensive side of the ball. Unless they commit to that style of football going forward, they will continue getting beat by teams like this in the playoffs every year. Hopefully, Thompson and McCarthy see the light and focus their off-season on building that out as the team’s identity because they are wasting the prime years of a terrific QB while they don’t do this.

  128. fnf417 says: Jan 5, 2014 8:31 PM

I see some people doing this Colin Kapernick>Alex Smith and true 49ers did win but look who had a better game all the way around in their game they played this weekend wether they win or loss Alex Smith still had a better game and higher QB rating higher completion percentage more passing yards more touchdowns I know they didn’t win but the only thing kap did better is he had more yards on the ground

  129. packerpauly says: Jan 5, 2014 8:32 PM

Hats off to the 49ers for a great game and good luck the rest of the way in the playoffs. My Packers gave it a good effort and the game was closer in many respects that I think many people would have believed that it would be. That being said it is obvious that we still don’t know how to contain Kapernick. If Jarret Bush just stays home on that last drive and forces him up into the pocket, he might not have scrambled for the first down. That was the game right there. Maybe we’ll get you guys next time.

The stat is something like Zero for 20. Zero.

  134. jerrykill4pres says: Jan 5, 2014 8:36 PM

Packers didn’t even belong in the playoffs.. That is, was, and will be evident.

Next week in the divisional rounds. The NFC teams have 3 very good defensive teams. Seattle, Carolina and the 9′rs all play very very good defense.

Kaepernick looked more comfortable in the cold than Rodgers did. GB doesn’t have an answer for 7 and might never have an answer for him.

Rodgers, Brady, and Manning are still the best “pure passers” in the league. No doubt about that. But give #7 some time and he’s going to get better and better. He makes some spectacular throws, and some that kinda scare you. But he’s still young. He makes so many plays with his feet, it’s flat out scary.

Next weekend will be some good games! Brees and the saints can’t play with these other 3 NFC teams.

And I hate to say it. But neither can any team from the NFC north!

    Let’s keep things in perspective.

The team spent almost half the season without their number one player, the core of the team, and the dude who sets the tone for the entire offense.

They also spent half the season without their number one defensive player, as well.

They spent the entire season battling various injuries, some of them life threatening (Finley, remember that?).

They had three replacement QBs, one of whom fell apart one play into his first start. One might have well have been a rookie, and the other one had to relearn an entire team on the fly in less than a week’s time.

Considering that they had everything against them this year, the fact they got this close is awesome.

Well now that is quite a far cry from what you said a couple days ago. Not worth the time to go digging up, but you were among those saying the cold would kill the niners and Rodgers would carve them up. If you think the niners played even close to their best today you are delusional. The cold did effect them, as did the blatant PI’s on Crabtree in the endzone on back to back drives. So since you wanna play the what ifs.. What if those calls happen, they end up 1st and goal at the one (pretty much guaranteed TD’s at that point) and they are up 14-0 instead of 6-0 in the 1st qtr? Yeah that’s what I thought.

Just like we all laughed at Viking fans who talked about winning the NFC North all summer long.
Hilarious, the Vikes are the greatest team in the league, February thru August.

As for the 9ers, congrats on a big win. Playoff wins are very difficult in this league.
Missed opportunities aside, your team came through when it counted.
I still can’t stand your coach though.

Immediately after that play the commentators said the reason why there was no flag. Had the ball been snapped it would be a flag but it wasn’t and Smith reset before Rodgers snapped. That has always been the rule.

Note for any Packers fans or Rodgers apologists: The win over the Chicago Bears last week was not over a winning team. The stat is for teams that end the regular season with a winning record. The Bears ended up 8-8.

It’s not my stat. It’s been on the 4 letter network and that cold hard football website.

The fact remains after today’s game. Aaron Rodgers has never ever lead a 4th Quarter (or OT) comeback victory over a winning team.

P.S. The stat is that way for good reason. If, for example, a QB lead a comeback win over a team that was 2-1 at the time of the contest, but loses the next 13 games and ends up 2-14 for the season, is that a ‘comeback against a winning team’? Of course, not.

  191. sellinmp1506 says: Jan 5, 2014 10:00 PM

How many games did Rodgers have such a large lead he didn’t need a comeback genius? How many leads did he get in the second part of the 4th quarter, only to have his defense give the lead back up and lose the game?

“You’re just too good at winning Rodgers, can you keep some games close and have some comebacks for these stat geeks? Thanks”

  192. donsjohnson says: Jan 5, 2014 10:05 PM

Well we all can feel so enlightened from all the Vikings ‘fans’ to hear that the Packers suck and the Vikings are just so awesome. (On a thread for playoff game the Vikings had nothing to do with!) As if Minnesota were somehow completely different than Wisconsin just by crossing a river! (Well, ok, Minneapolis muffinland is just as different from the rest of Minnesota as it is from Wisconsin, but they’re oblivious to this reality.) Plenty of “Bud Grant” trophies in that trophy case of theirs up there in Minnysoeduh, doan ya noe, according to them. Too bad said trophies are invisible to fans of every other team, but don’t tell them that. Being a troll is one thing, but seriously, win at least one Super Bowl before proceeding to troll on a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with you or your team. But perhaps it’s too much to expect you to act like your team has actually been there before…that is, been there and won at least one, instead of losing four over 40 years ago.

Grats Niners fans. Good luck the rest of the way.

The reality of the Packers loss isn’t surprising. They are part of the NFC North which, to say the least, underperformed moreso than any division in Football.

The vikes(and I’m a vikes fan) just flat out sucked. Lions and Bears both had the division won, then flat out choked. The Packers played a soft schedule, winning the division because of it and the terrible bears/lions, then were quickly revealed as mediocre, by a decent 49rs team. One and done for them should really surprise no one.

  194. sellinmp1506 says: Jan 5, 2014 10:07 PM

4th quarter comebacks is the best measure of teams and QB’s who can’t put away teams early and have to struggle to win.

Matt Ryan, Mark Sanchez, Jay Cutler, Michael Vick, Josh Freeman and Alex Smith are up there for 4th quarter comebacks.

4th quarter comebacks….as useful as the RBI. Probably the same dolts who worship both.

Gee, you’re a Vikes fan? On a thread involving the Packers and nothing to do with your team? Yep, that also isn’t surprising.

No Packer fan I know is saying the Packer’s loss to the 49ers was surprising. Find me one. Actually, the fact that the Packers never gave up this season despite all the injuries to key players, making the playoffs regardless of the circumstances, and were able to take the 49ers down to the wire, losing on a game-ending field goal…that is what is surprising to us….that’s a “won and done” year for us, who can handle coming up short given we have 4 Lombardis to relish……and disappointing to you Vikes fans, who were oh so hoping that the Packers would get destroyed, losing by a large margin. But yes, we lost, so you can rest secure…Packers losses always being your coping mechanism for dealing with the annual none-and-done legacy of your team from it’s very beginning, where even tying the Pack is like winning the Super Bowl to you. Enjoy your pathos.

I think it is fortunate for all of Wisconsin, and the self proclaimed “best, most loyal fans in the world” that the game was close until the end. Otherwise the, literal, fair weather fans that couldn’t be bothered to sell out a playoff game because it was going to be cold, and were saved by the local 50 watt tv station and a bank, would have left in droves as soon as the game was out of reach, and been lining up to get frostbite on their oversized rear ends to moon the 49ers on the they way out after a victory. As it was the 75% of paying customers stayed for the heartbreak. Sweetest victory of the weekend.

Interestingly the Packers looked okay out there today. I doubt the Bears or Lions would’ve made it a game. The Packers need better o-line play, and safeties. Haven’t seen a good safety in GB since Collins went down. Either draft better or fire Capers. Which is it Thompson? Be nice to get Mathews, Bulaga, and Finley back next year. Considering Rodgers was out half the year to still win the North was an unexpected surprise. I do not see how the Lions or Vikings expect to win this division as long as Rodgers is a Packer. Seriously no chance.

Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning have many many 4th Quarter comebacks against winning teams. Rodgers has had 3 such opportunities against just the 49ers alone in the last couple of years, and has come up short.

Packer fans and Rodgers apologists can squeel and whimper all they want, but a fact is a fact.

It’s a damning stat. When the game is on the line against a good WINNING team, Rodgers has still failed to win such a game. And, the stat is for 20 or so games – that’s more than a FULL NFL season. Not some tiny sample.

To those of you saying Rodgers has never led a 4th quarter comeback against a team that finished the season with a winning record:

    1. There are some cases where Rodgers did his job but his defense didn’t do theirs. (ex. Packers-Vikings in week 17 of 2012)

    2. The other team failed to finish with a winning record BECAUSE Rodgers led a comeback against them. (ex. Packers-Bears in week 17 of 2013)

    3. Rodgers did lead a 4th quarter comeback against the Seahawks last year. The only people who disagree are Roger Goodell and the replacement refs.

Point being, there are several flaws in this stat.

Well, “the game’s greatest QB” doesn’t get it done again. The media has to chill with its worshipping of QB’s they put on a pedestal and have to keep them there no matter what. Rodgers is a whiner and a self absorbed perfectionist too scared to go for it and maybe throw an INT. So when he has to make a difference in a game and gamble he won’t or he takes a sack. He’s scared of ruining his stats.

Sure, he made a few nice escape plays but it appeared to be more poor tackling or San Fran going for the ball rather than decking him. Of course not to be mentioned by the darling media and announcers. He got plain lucky and they still lost, with the vaunted unstoppable Green Bay offence.

Of course now Kap is the flavour of the week and he next could be put on a pedestal next all in order to sell the NFL to the ignorant viewer.

IMHO, football is becoming a joke with any QB off the street can come in a throw for 400 yards in a game, 4-5,000 in a season and numerous TD passes. The NFL has watered down the league so QBs of any intelligence or quality can look good in many circumstances, but it does catch up to them eventually. Hear that Kap? Your next.

Don’t worry, Green Bay. Seattle will avenge your loss.

As much as Kaepernick owns the Packers, the Seahawks own Kaepernick. If they somehow make it past Carolina, were going to put another 20+ point beatdown on our little brothers from the Bay. Maybe this time, Kaepernick won’t run off the field before the clock has expired and actually stick around to shake hands and learn how to be a true sportsman from Wilson.

Just rewatched the game, and it shouldn’t have been close. Crabtree was mauled and basically bear hugged in the end zone on both of the Niners’ first drives. Should have been 14-0, and any fan except for the most homer Packer fans would have to agree. I’m all for the refs letting them play but Crabtree didn’t even have a chance to get open on those plays.

Refs kept the Packers in this one.

  224. discosucs2005 says: Jan 8, 2014 8:20 AM

“As much as Kaepernick owns the Packers, the Seahawks own Kaepernick.”

Um what? Kap is 3-0 against the Pack (including twice in the post season) and 2-2 against Seattle. How is that remotely the same?

“Maybe this time, Kaepernick won’t run off the field before the clock has expired”

This never happened. I just Googled it and literally found a photo of Kap and Wilson shaking hands from every game he’s played against Seattle as a starter, including the big loss before last year’s playoffs.

I’m a 49ers fan, but I’m not naive about playing in Seattle and know that the Seahawks have been virtually impossible to beat at home (I know the Cards just did it, but that’s the exception, not the rule). But the Seahawks have it in their head that they’ve just been crushing us for the past two years when in reality, the home team has won every matchup.
