Mike Sherman is out as offensive coordinator in Miami.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin announced today that he has fired Sherman after two years on the job.

“I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins,” Philbin said in a statement distributed by the team. “Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.”

It must have been a tough decision for Philbin, who has long considered Sherman a close friend. (The two first met when Sherman was Philbin’s high school English teacher and assistant football coach, and Sherman got Philbin his first coaching job, as a graduate assistant at Tulane in 1984.) But this was a decision that had been expected, as the Dolphins’ offense under-performed this season. Players on the Dolphins reportedly wanted Sherman out, and now Sherman is out.
