Jets sign cornerback Ras-I Dowling

Ramses Barden AP

The Jets have signed cornerback Ras-I Dowling to a reserve/future contract, the club announced Monday.

The No. 33 overall pick in the 2011 draft, the 25-year-old Dowling has played in nine regular-season NFL games, all with New England, who selected him at the top of the second round.

Injuries marked Dowling’s career with the Patriots. He was limited to just two games with a hip ailment in 2011 and just seven games with a thigh injury in 2012. The Patriots waived him in August.

Dowling (6-1, 2010) ended the 2013 season on the Jets’ practice squad. The club had signed him to a practice-squad contract on October 13.

it’s pretty cool that there is a player named after a DC comics villain.

2010 pounds?? No wonder he gets injured so much.

    That’s why they’re the Jets.

Good pickup Jets. Everybody likes a little free candy.

Ras-I was just about to give up on football and try his hand as a rapper. Like Left Eye Lopes.

Did they sign a different head coach, QB, wide receiver, running back, lineman, linebacker? No? Well then it doesn’t matter. 6-10 in 2014.

Richard Sherman ended up becoming what I always figured Ras-I Dowling was going to be. Big size, physical, wasn’t afraid to make plays on the ball. Jury’s still not out on this guy yet if he can stay healthy, Belichick cut another early pick alleged bust DB in Darius Butler and he’s a good corner for the Colts now. Not to mention Lawyer Milloy beasting forever after Bill let him walk. Dude’s an outstanding coach who wins like crazy but that makes people gloss over his numerous misfires in the draft.

He’ll be a great addition to the Jets IR

Rex Ryan, Ras-I Dowling, now all we need is news re Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes, to both get cut. Jets are beginning their 2014 Super Bowl moves. The big Jets are on the runway and watch the takeoff..

This is why BB is such a great coach: He was to deal with a lousy GM.

Plus he was the bad guy in Batman Begins, so that’s pretty cool.

The thing with Dowling is.. he’s a good player…if he is not on IR.

Worth the shot, maybe the guy can get it together, stay healthy, and be a contribution to the defense. But if not it’s not hurting the jets much if they cut him.

He had decent moments on the field when he wasn’t hurt. . . But he is made of glass.

I’ll never forget when Ras-I Dowling and BenJarvus Green-Ellis were on the Patriots roster, right after they moved on from Tully Banta-Cain but before they signed Michael Hoomanawanui and Ja’Gared Davis.

First of all, no doubt BB isn’t perfect with draft picks, but his record is as good as a lot of the better GMs considering how low he picks every year.
With Lawyer, that was a money only deal. BB knew he could still play. He just has a value for a player and that’s it. He said a few years ago that cutting Milloy was the hardest cut he ever made. He loved Lawyer. I hated the cut as I also loved Lawyer, but the way BB makes his decisions is good by me. If he didn’t let guys who could still play and were older and cost a lot for the production walk, the Pats wouldn’t have such a solid second tier of players and especially this year, they probably would have been 9-7 at best. They have more money sitting on IR than any other team in the league but they are still competitive.

Butler definitely seems to be a decent pickup for the Colts. Sometimes guys just need to play in a different scheme. There are ex Pats scattered around the league like Tate, Green-Ellis, S. Brown, Woodhead, Welker who are still as good as when they were on the Pats but none of them were let to walk because they didn’t have skills. It’s that BB feels he can replace their talents cheaper and better. And in that thought, he’s usually correct.

I still think BB’s worst mistake in FA ever is one people never talk about and that’s Adalius Thomas. That move alone shows what a good defensive mind Rex Ryan is. He fooled BB into thinking AD actually could play.

I thought at the time that Brooks Reed or Jabaal Sheard would have been better picks with the 33rd pick. RaID is a solid player and you can see flashes of the talent that he has, but his rep coming out of college was that he was constantly hurt, and we saw that in the couple of seasons he was here. Belichick just got tired of waiting for him to stay healthy.

Ryan seems to have a knack for keeping free agents healthy who seem to get injured all the time ( see: LaRon Landry, Kellen Winslow).
