Mark Davis confirms Dennis Allen remains as Raiders head coach

Denver Broncos v Oakland Raiders Getty Images

All signs seemed to point toward Dennis Allen remaining as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders for the 2014 season.

According to Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com, Raiders owner Mark Davis said that Allen is still the head coach after a meeting between the two parties on Tuesday night.

Allen wouldn’t speak to reporters about how the meeting with Davis went when leaving team headquarters Tuesday evening. The status of Allen’s assistant coaches appeared to be one of the holdups in talks between the two sides. Only offensive coordinator Greg Olson and linebackers coach Bob Sanders had contracts for next season and Allen was apparently only willing to give one-year extensions to the remaining assistants.

Whatever issues remained appear to have been smoothed over as Allen is set to return next season. The Raiders have posted consecutive 4-12 campaigns in the last two seasons under Allen.

I think Mark Davis would have been justified in firing Dennis Allen, in fact I think he should have!

  2. cspsrbums says: Jan 8, 2014 2:50 AM

I believe about 6 of those games they were beat on the last drive. Get a descent secondary and corners and they will be a team to reckon with next year

Guy needs to be given a chance, end the lack of continuity…

Cant turn that mess of a franchise around in two seasons. Lets see how he gets on now theyre out of cap hell and able to put his own stamp on the team

And with the first pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select….Jameis Winston

  6. ballergac says: Jan 8, 2014 3:19 AM

He deserves this chance. Raiders have truly gutted the team. But Allen needs to win this upcoming year. Super Bowl? No. Playoffs? Unlikely. But a competitive 6-10 or 7-9 team with young guys and great foundation (o – line, d – line and defense) then that will be a great season heading into 2015 with playoff hopes.

  8. sickoe47 says: Jan 8, 2014 3:39 AM

Progress and consistency is slowly coming into the raiders vocabulary.this was the most necessary move going foward and is a show of commitment by mark davis and reggie McKenzie of turning this struggling franchise to a respectable brand of football again.

  9. ninerider says: Jan 8, 2014 3:42 AM

You can’t fire someone from a job that no one else is going to take. Good luck raider fans. Maybe you’ll sell your season tickets like my brother in law and join the red and gold.

  10. flybono24 says: Jan 8, 2014 3:44 AM

Well there goes next season. At least I’ll save money on tickets now.

  11. joetoronto says: Jan 8, 2014 3:57 AM

You can’t evaluate Allen and the assistants based on a year after the blowup, with the lowest payroll in the league, IMO.

After this coming year is a different story though.

You guys that want a new HC every year or two have to realize that those days are gone, like it or not.

  12. calibear831 says: Jan 8, 2014 4:14 AM

All day I kept refreshing PFT’s front page in hopes of reading a headline saying “Dennis Allen out in Oakland”. . .sigh, another wasted year. I know the best thing isn’t to switch coaches every other year, but I know this guy’s is not the answer!, he’s a D list coach that only D- list coaches want to work for!.

  16. williamwallacewouldhavebeenaraider says: Jan 8, 2014 6:33 AM

Consistency is key. Landry didn’t win his first couple of seasons. Doesn’t matter who the coach is the roster is a joke and needs upgrades at almost every position. So good job keeping Allen. Let him grow as a coach, build up the talent, and see what ya got.

  19. therealtruth210 says: Jan 8, 2014 7:05 AM

FINALLY!! a good decision. This team needs stability. Allen and McKenzie had to deal with the SLOP that was left behind from Al Davis. McKenzie has had nothing to work with either. Didn’t have a 1st rd pick in 2012 and didn’t have a 2nd rd pick in 2013, because of the Palmer deal and he has been cap strapped the last 2 years as well.

This year they will have $64 million to spend and all of their draft picks, now is when you can start judging Allen and McKenzie

  20. araidersfan says: Jan 8, 2014 7:33 AM

With 60+ mil. in cap room and a full complement of draft picks, there’s absolutely no excuse for the Raiders not to show significant improvement on the field in 2014 (assuming McKenzie can make competent player acquisition decisions). If they improve to at least around 8-8 then they should stick with the current regime.

On the other hand, if the Raiders are still bad in 2014, then it would be time to jettison BOTH McKenzie & Allen and bring in a new GM & HC.

  21. jimmyt says: Jan 8, 2014 7:34 AM

Probably a smart thing. Are there really enough viable candidates with all the openings out there? Are there ever?

  22. teambringitstrong says: Jan 8, 2014 7:37 AM

Looks like I’m spending my 2014 NFL Sundays with Greg Papa and Tom Flores listening to the games on the radio. I love my Raiders but can’t justify spending $1800 for season tickets to watch the 2014 product.

Mark You did a great job of dropping the ball and costing us our OL coach. He did a great job of holding that terrible line together when they were dropping like flies last season. I hope this is a lesson learned. The fact that you waited two weeks after the season to meet with the coach is absurd. It looks like that decision cost you Sparano

  29. nflofficeadmin says: Jan 8, 2014 8:40 AM

To be fair, Allen has been fighting with one arm tied behind his back given the cap situation and loss of draft picks from the past.

  30. omniusprime says: Jan 8, 2014 8:51 AM

Mark Davis is a moron, no brains inherited from his intelligent father. Denise Allen is a loser and will always keep the Raiders in the pretender category as long as he coaches the team.

We need to get rid of this worthless excuse of a coach and bring in someone with some real coaching talent. Sad to watch two opt my favorite sports franchises, the Raiders and Lakers, wrecked by incompetent coaches and owners after the father died.

    Fire Denise Allen!

The Chargers, Broncos and Chiefs all make the playoffs and the Raiders respond by signing Trent Edwards and bringing back their 4-win coach. That’s why they’re the Raiders.

  32. tooz72 says: Jan 8, 2014 9:05 AM

there was ZERO talent on this team after all the idiotic Al Davis drafts and ridiculous FA signings who failed to produce.. Reggie came in and dropped all the bad players with the massive contracts and the players who couldn’t play.. this is year #3 of rebuilding(and don’t give me that crap about rebuilding the last 12 years because Davis never rebuilt, he would just re-load with bad over the hill football players with even more ridiculous contracts).. this is a true rebuilding going on right now.. this team will be 70 million under the cap plus 8 draft picks.. none of this was Dennis Allen’s fault.. he deserves another year or two..

“Cant turn that mess of a franchise around in two seasons.”
    ———————————————————————————–
What do you mean? Dennis Allen and Reggie Mac have turned the franchise around in two seasons. They turned it from An exciting playoff contender into a less than professional grade AFC West doormat.

Raiders chase greatness. Dennis Allen won’t lead you to greatness. Have you all heard his goals for the Raiders? Its to make the Raiders a top 12 team(playoff team) in the NFL…the man inherited a team that was one drive..one defensive stand away from being a top 12/playoff team in 2011. So we’re deconstructing and rebuilding just to get back to where we were in 2011???? How does Mark Davis buy that B.S. DA and Reggie’s selling? How much wool is over his eyes.

Plus having a goal doesn’t cost anything. It’s totally free. Why set a goal as low as just being a top 12 team? Why not set it higher.Set it To be a championship contenter? Dennis Allen needs to realize..he’s not New Orleans Saint anymore..he’s not Denver Bronco…he’s a Raider. Chase greatness. It’s what we do here. That’s why this is historically the winningest franchise and most recognized franchise around the globe.

  40. dante170 says: Jan 8, 2014 10:05 AM

To the guys threatening to find another team – do it, right now and never come back. Front runners not welcome here.
To the “fire everyone” types – that mentality has been layed to rest – literally.
This franchise is undergoing a fundamental shift in philosophy and joining the 21st century. Responsible citizens of the Nation can see that the team is laying a solid foundation for sustained success, not desperately and irrationally mortgaging the future for short-term success.

  43. raiderufan says: Jan 8, 2014 10:21 AM

We need to get our QB of the future, a RB to help him and dig into the DE, DT and Interior O-line market in free agency.

Get Veldheer and Branch back for the season, re-sign Houston and tell Tarver to unleash Sio Moore.

I’d bet at least a couple of those 4 losses by 5 or less turn into wins…and maybe a couple teams we should beat we do….

8-8 in 2014 with a bright future and still solid cap space sounds great to me….and entirely possible

  44. icanspeel says: Jan 8, 2014 10:22 AM

Raiders are in trouble, especially since the AFC West is strong right now. Just seems like Allen will have another bad year, get fired and they will be starting over again.

  45. butlers91 says: Jan 8, 2014 10:30 AM

    Hey Bowl hair boy,

Of course you keep your coach. Nobody wants to coach your loser team. I hear you are thinking of tarping the second deck next year? You need to move back to LA so you don’t have to compete with Niners. You are back page news in NorCal. Must be killing the few Raider fans in Bay to see exciting Niner team year after year! Facial!

  47. r8rsfan says: Jan 8, 2014 10:53 AM

Charles Woodson has stated publicly, several times, that he supports Allen and thinks he’s the guy to lead the team back to respectability. Of all the guys on the roster I respect C-Wood’s opinion the most. He’s seen it first hand and been an integral part of a SB winner. In Chuck We Trust.

While I am all for “Continuity” .. This team was 1 win away from the Playoffs when McKenzie came in.. Even after losing 4 out of 6 to end the season under Hue, Also continuity is a two way street in terms of coaching and player personnel. Without any doubt whatever narrative you wish to chose, the Raiders have taken a step backwards under McKenzie and Co., They could have easily finished with the 5th pick overall draft pick if not higher had they kept the players that “had to go”.

  50. granadafan says: Jan 8, 2014 11:26 AM

The Raiders will never sniff another Super Bowl until the Davis family sells the team. The modern game long passed Al’s savvy and Mark is just as incompetent. He was lucky to have been born with a silver spoon, never had to lift a finger to work, was an average student at Chico State (party school), and knows nothing about football.

  51. jjackwagon says: Jan 8, 2014 11:50 AM

11 years with no playoff appearances, tied with Cleveland. That’s good company right there. Only Buffalo has a longer drought at 14. Makes you wonder how Cable or Hue Jack managed to coach 8 wins out of this team.

Until the league can let go of the hatred toward Al Davis and bias against the Raiders, I know this will continue to be an uphill battle difficult to win.

The Raiders managed to overcome it in the early 2000′s, but the league made sure their chances at another ring were sabotaged and they would be crippled for years to come.

From what I’ve seen, the league hates Mark just as much as his father, and will continue to try to destroy Al’s legacy.

  61. jjackwagon says: Jan 8, 2014 4:55 PM

The Raiders have a legit shot to go 0-16 next year. They have 9 games against playoff teams.
They will get swept by the AFC & NFC West, that’s 10 losses.
    They will lose to NE.
They might catch BUF, NYJ, MIA, CLE, or HOU on a bad day and avoid the O-fer.
