Report: Mike Zimmer interviewing with Vikings Wednesday, Titans Thursday

Mike Zimmer AP

The Vikings have been taking their time with their search for Leslie Frazier’s replacement, but things will reportedly take a step forward on Wednesday.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will interview with the Vikings for their head coaching vacancy on Thursday. He’s the third defensive coordinator to reportedly sit down with Minnesota, joining (for now) Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles on the list of interviewees.

Unless they break from the deliberate approach and make Zimmer an offer he can’t refuse, the coach won’t be lingering with the Vikes for too long. Schefter reports that he’s set to interview with the Titans on Thursday. He’ll follow Bengals staffmate Jay Gruden with the Titans after Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator interviewed with Tennessee on Tuesday.

The Redskins and Lions have also believed to have interest in Zimmer, who has been a regular on the head coaching interview circuit for the last couple of years.

A team would be retarded to not give this guy a chance. He will whip them into shape.

  2. doctorrustbelt says: Jan 8, 2014 10:20 AM

Why would anyone take that job?!?

Old stadium, low character players, and terrible team.

I hope the Vikings hire him; their defense could sure use his help.

He wont get out of the Winter Park today. This guy is just what they need. Strong leadership, hardcore motivator, players love him! So much talent on this team with a couple idiots, Great draft coming up and a new stadium. I would say things are looking up for the Vikes! Let these old slow crowd favorites go and let the young kids play!!

  6. jcmeyer10 says: Jan 8, 2014 10:40 AM

Liked Zimmer since I saw him on Hard Knocks. Seems like a no nonsense guy who will have your back when it counts.

Zimmer’s defenses produce year after year, and defenses win championships. Just sayin’…

  8. purplepillager says: Jan 8, 2014 10:41 AM

Mike Zimmer has been the focus of the Vikings’ coaching search all along. Unless the interview goes poorly, he’ll never make it to Tennessee.

Oh so you ran your trap all year with useless fantasy land numbers which ended in the worse way for you and your loser QB but now your resulting in cracking on another man’s team??? Loser LOL

Defense and leadership. Vikings are needing both. Zimmer fills both needs and if the Vikes let him walk he won’t be back. Spielman, your @ss is on the line. He is your guy!

All these overly optimistic lavender Larry posts are really kind of, well, sad. To call this team a “train wreck” is giving it to much credit. I hope they design the roof of their new “monument to their stupidity” to look like a Big Top Circus tent and the interior to look like a gigantic toilet because that best represents you now and your future.

  13. chargerdillon says: Jan 8, 2014 10:57 AM

Mike Zimmer is too good of coach to go to the Vikings.

2 or 3 years ago when Jared Allen had more health in him, this would have been a brilliant pairing for Zimmer but not anymore.

He should be going to Detroit plain and simple. Zimmer will get the most out of that entire front line of first rounders if anybody can.

  14. rutchaser says: Jan 8, 2014 10:58 AM

    Take Marvin not Zimmer.

  15. thepftpoetlivesinhismomsbasement says: Jan 8, 2014 11:05 AM

Bevell is going to be the guy…..Zimmer knows too much work to be done there and they are in need of vast improvement over some other teams.

Although…if they pull the “let me make you an offer you can’t refuse”…..he may just stick.

I’ll take my lumps on all thumbs down….if you guys want to look at everything thru foggy glasses, your call. This team isn’t anywhere CLOSE to challenging for the division, better yet the Conference.

Anyway….whoever takes this job has to start from scratch, minus a stud RB, an up and coming WR corp, and a few defensive studs. He also has to work in lousy conditions the next few while the stadium gets built, and that’s 2 stressful years and the coach will likely get 3 or 4 max. I think Spielman may be the weak link in the chain for any coach coming there, the way he goes thru them like underwear….historically, you can’t argue that.

    _______

You’re saying the Vikings aren’t close to contending for a division that was won with an 8-7-1 record this year? This is the NFL. Every team is close to contending. What did you say about Kansas City last year or Indianapolis the year before? Even if mediocre quarterback play this year, they still had the best record in the division over the second half of the season.

How are the conditions at TCF Bank Stadium any more lousy than where the Bengals play? There will be a couple of cold games. I don’t hear the Packers complaining about cold weather.

Spielman goes through coaches like underwear? This is going to be his first coaching hire of his career.

  19. eastman420 says: Jan 8, 2014 11:49 AM

Doctor rust obviously knows nothing about. Old stadium ah got a state of the art stadium being built right now. And the next 2 years gonna be at a new gophers stadium. Low character watever you mean by that. Terrible team yea this year wasnt that great. But hey here in MN we have fun with our football win or lose. Taking it ur a packer fan since your commenting on a vikings story. You guys need to lighten up football isn’t life. Learn to have fun and quit being so uptight. Swear you guys have nothing to live for but the packers. Whole life out there enjoy!!

Do you even WATCH the NFL??? In todays age of parity, a team can go from zero to the playoffs in a year. Happens all the time.

  21. dohkay79 says: Jan 8, 2014 11:54 AM

I agree Spielman is a weak link, hasn’t found a quarterback yet.

I’m not saying the Vikings are the most attractive team currently searching for a head coach, just that they do have some strong selling points.

Playing outdoors for 2 seasons is not one of them but playing in a brand new indoor stadium is.

Money to spend on free agents is another. Adrian Peterson is another.

The biggest knock they have right now is a lack of quarterback.

Every team searching for a head coach right now has their faults.

  22. reggiewhitewasoverratedandoverweight says: Jan 8, 2014 11:55 AM

I would love this hire for MN. Biggest thing no matter who they hire is QB and a play caller that will use the weapons they have unlike the index card carrying OC we had.

  23. blowfishes says: Jan 8, 2014 11:55 AM

Of the defensive minds available, I would prefer Zimmer be given a chance with the Vikings. It would be great if he could bring in Jim Schwartz as Defensive Coordinator, keep Mike Priefer as Special Teams Coordinator, and focus on an established Offensive Coordinator like Jim Zorn (who has worked with Cassel before I believe – assuming he stays another season to help develop a rookie).

If they don’t get Zimmer, then I hope they get Greg Roman.

I could also see the Vikings trade with either the Titans or Jaguars, sending Ponder out, and bringing either Locker or Gabbert in. Ponder has shown more – albeit limited – promise, but each is still young enough for a change of scenery to bring better fortunes. At worst, they will be an adequate backup for a season.

  24. cincyfan0890 says: Jan 8, 2014 11:56 AM

He needs to be the HC of the Bengals. Maybe then they would WANT to get over the hump.

  25. junglerat524 says: Jan 8, 2014 11:59 AM

Get your grubby hands off of my DC!

  26. junglerat524 says: Jan 8, 2014 12:00 PM

    Take Gruden instead!

  27. blowfishes says: Jan 8, 2014 12:03 PM

Spielman didn’t employ Childress, and he only had an input of Frasier. Most fans wanted Frasier, and I still feel he will be a great head coach in the future. Spielman has had two solid drafts, and the team playing hard to the end of the year rather than tank out, is attractive to potential free agents.
I believe that Spielman will devise another solid draft, and dependent on who the new head coach is, should be able to bring in good free agents. If the Vikings get Zimmer, then it wouldn’t surprise me if Jared Allen is brought back on a good/fair contract for both player and team.

  28. stoptrippn says: Jan 8, 2014 12:03 PM

Zimmer’s attitude will not get him hired. Ask some current players on the roster. he plays favorites and ruins others careers

  29. doctorrustbelt says: Jan 8, 2014 12:04 PM

Zimmer is just testing the waters.

Zimmer wants another season in Cincinnati (w/ healthy Geno Atkins and Leon Hall).

  30. blowfishes says: Jan 8, 2014 12:06 PM

Also, what is the issue of the Vikings not having a franchise QB?

Surely it is well established that most new Head Coaches want to bring in their own man for the job!

  31. macneil4025 says: Jan 8, 2014 12:06 PM

Don’t let him leave the building, and if he does, Spielman better be on the grey hound right behind him!

  35. gbmickey says: Jan 8, 2014 12:28 PM

Of all the coaching positions this appears to be the least attractive. Have arguably the worst defense in the NFL, a rb who has maybe a couple years left, and no qb. Based on draft position the help will be gone and the team will be left reaching once again. Why would Zimmer not take a job with say the Lions. Defensive minded coach with much more to work with in Detroit.

  36. beelicker says: Jan 8, 2014 12:28 PM

Wasn’t your last head coach a former Bengals’ DC?

  37. eastman420 says: Jan 8, 2014 1:00 PM

I hear ya on a bad defense it we got some key ieces to build around. Harry smith, floyd, rhodes,we still have greenway, robison teally turned it on.

  38. tokyosandblaster says: Jan 8, 2014 1:01 PM

Yes, the Packers are out of the playoffs, Contra. We understand these sort of things happen.

We understand that the defense needs help at safety and linebacker, the offensive lines needs depth, and we could use some upgrades at certain coaching positions.

But do you understand what your team needs?

    I’ll help:

A new QB. A new RB (yours is old and breaking down, worst starter in the division this year). New receivers. A new offensive Line. A New Defensive line. New Linebackers. A new secondary. A new GM. A new Head Coach. New position coaches across the board. A new fan base.

Huh. I just could have saved some time and said “Everything. Absolutely everything.”

  39. whatjusthapped says: Jan 8, 2014 1:05 PM

Zimmerman has one qualification that is perfect for the Vikings. His teams choke in the playoffs. Not quite to the standards of the Vikings choking in the playoffs but to be fair, the Buffalo Bills are the only other team to lose 4 Superbowls but they have failed to blow 5 consecutive Conference championship appearances like the Vikings did so I get the Vikings the nod there.

A qB challenged team, just what they need, a defensive guru. And I thought Spielman’s biggest mistake was going to be his 1st round QB draft bust but this hire will prove me wrong.

I heard something interesting before the Vikings/Bengals game; if NFL games were only 59 minutes long, the Vikings would be 9-5 right now. Even if they lost the last 2 games of the season, that would have won the division. I’m just pointing out how close they really were to winning the division, even with one of the worst QB situations in the game.

  41. reggiewhitewasoverratedandoverweight says: Jan 8, 2014 1:31 PM

A new RB (yours is old and breaking down, worst starter in the division this year).

Not sure who you are talking about but AP finished above Lacy in almost every category. While being injured almost the whole season.

  42. fr0sted21 says: Jan 8, 2014 1:36 PM

The amount of Packer fans that raid every Vikings thread is absurd. There’s one qualification to being a Packer fan, and that seems to be an unhealthy obsession with the Vikings.
