Alshon Jeffery replaces Calvin Johnson on Pro Bowl roster

Alshon Jeffery is set to join teammate Brandon Marshall in Hawaii.

The NFL announced Thursday that Jeffery, the Bears’ second-year star wide receiver, has been added to the Pro Bowl roster.

Jeffery replaces Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who dealt with a knee injury for much of the season and missed Detroit’s regular-season finale against Minnesota with the ailment.

The 23-year-old Jeffery hauled in 89 passes for 1,461 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013. He had 20 catches of 20 yards or more and seven receptions of 40 yards or more.

This marks the first time in Bears history that two of their receivers have been named to the Pro Bowl in the same season. Moreover, Jeffery is just the sixth Bears wideout to be named to the NFL’s all-star game. Marshall (2013-2014), Marty Booker (2003), Dick Gordon (1971), Johnny Morris (1961, 1965) and Harlon Hill (1955-1957) are the others.

The 2014 Pro Bowl is Sunday, January 26 in Honolulu. The game will air on NBC at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

  1. Jeffery is a beast. It was fun to watch him play on sundays this past season. The pro bowl is honestly a joke though, how does Lavonte David, how made the first team All-Pro.. I understand he plays in a small market and that my bucs did horrible this past season, but isn’t the pro bowl supposed to be the best players?

  2. Bears Pro-Bowlers: 2
    Vikings Pro-Bowlers: 2
    Lions Pro-Bowlers: 2

    Packers Pro-Bowlers: 0

That’s what it feels like to be below everyone talent wise.

  3. Alshon should’ve made the Pro Bowl in the 1st place not as a replacement. Good to see him get there though he deserves it. Nobody went up and snatched the ball out of the sky better than Jeffery. And to think he’s only played 2 seasons and missed a good amount of games his rookie year with a broken hand. SCARY……

  4. Good to see Alshon get recognized. Hate to see CJ out, though…Imagine him, Marshall, and Jeffery lining up together.

thats what it feels like to be ABOVE everyone championship wise.
i am by no means a packers fan or any NFCN fan, but come-on, if your only arguement against the packers is probowl picks, then you have issues. i’d rather have continuous playoff appearances and a consistant TEAM then to have multiple pro bowlers and a few guys that get a free trip to hawaii.

  6. Bears Playoff berths: 0
    Vikings Playoff berths: 0
    Lions Playoff berths: 0

    Packers Playoff berths: 1

Just let that soak in for a while.

  7. Jeffery deserves to go, he is one of the best WRs in NFL. Bears get some actual talent on their safety position and a healthy Melton they should be fight for division.

Viking fan, The Packers made the playoffs and went blow for blow 49ers. I think that’s a better situation than a 4 win team with a few fan votes.

  8. Bears Pro-Bowlers: 2

    I counter with:

    Bears Aaron Rodgers: 0
    Vikings Aaron Rodgers: 0
    Lions Aaron Rodgers: 0
    Packers Aaron Rodgers: 1

I think I’d take the Packers here.

  9. Alshon is going to get better and better. Next season he will take over as the number one in Chicago.

If Jay can be more consistent, the Bears will have a good shot at making the playoffs.

As far as the pro-bowl goes. It is basically a popularity contest. Lots of deserving players don’t get to go because they don’t sell enough jerseys. That is what we get when the fans get to pick who goes.

Just let that soak in for a while.

The Packers playoff berth was aborted by the49ers, even with blatant help from the refs

  12. Remember when the media used to tell us that AJ was a bum? That he was fat and slow? That Spurrier wr’s couldn’t make it in the NFL?

Where are those guys now? Where are the apologies?

  13. To all the peeved Packer fans ranting about how you made playoff with Aaron Rodgers, remember it was on the benefits of the twelfth man handing you a touchdown from a Rodgers bounce pass. Legal, depending on who is throwing it.
